One challenge for dialogue agents is to recognize feelings of the conversation partner and respond accordingly. In this work, RoBERTa-GPT2 is proposed for empathetic dialogue generation, where the pre-trained auto-encoding RoBERTa is utilised as encoder and the pre-trained auto-regressive GPT-2 as decoder. With the combination of the pre-trained RoBERTa and GPT-2, our model realizes a new state-of-the-art emotion accuracy. To enable the empathetic ability of RoBERTa-GPT2 model, we propose a commonsense knowledge and emotional concepts extractor, in which the commonsensible and emotional concepts of dialogue context are extracted for the GPT-2 decoder. The experiment results demonstrate that the empathetic dialogue generation benefits from both pre-trained encoder-decoder architecture and external knowledge.

Recent explorations of large-scale pre-trained language models (PLMs) such as GPT-3 have revealed the power of PLMs with huge amounts of parameters, setting off a wave of training ever-larger PLMs. However, training a large-scale PLM requires tremendous amounts of computational resources, which is time-consuming and expensive. In addition, existing large-scale PLMs are mainly trained from scratch individually, ignoring the availability of many existing well-trained PLMs. To this end, we explore the question that how can previously trained PLMs benefit training larger PLMs in future. Specifically, we introduce a novel pre-training framework named knowledge inheritance (KI), which combines both self-learning and teacher-guided learning to efficiently train larger PLMs. Sufficient experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our KI framework. We also conduct empirical analyses to explore the effects of teacher PLMs pre-training settings, including model architecture, pre-training data, etc. Finally, we show that KI can well support lifelong learning and knowledge transfer.

Rule-based dialogue management is still the most popular solution for industrial task-oriented dialogue systems for their interpretablility. However, it is hard for developers to maintain the dialogue logic when the scenarios get more and more complex. On the other hand, data-driven dialogue systems, usually with end-to-end structures, are popular in academic research and easier to deal with complex conversations, but such methods require plenty of training data and the behaviors are less interpretable. In this paper, we propose a method to leverages the strength of both rule-based and data-driven dialogue managers (DM). We firstly introduce the DM of Carina Dialog System (CDS, an advanced industrial dialogue system built by Microsoft). Then we propose the model-trigger design to make the DM trainable thus scalable to scenario changes. Furthermore, we integrate pre-trained models and empower the DM with few-shot capability. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and strong few-shot capability of our method.
To diversify and enrich generated dialogue responses, knowledge-grounded dialogue has been investigated in recent years. The existing methods tackle the knowledge grounding challenge by retrieving the relevant sentences over a large corpus and augmenting the dialogues with explicit extra information. Despite their success, however, the existing works have drawbacks on the inference efficiency. This paper proposes KnowExpert, an end-to-end framework to bypass the explicit retrieval process and inject knowledge into the pre-trained language models with lightweight adapters and adapt to the knowledge-grounded dialogue task. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to tackle this challenge without retrieval in this task under an open-domain chit-chat scenario. The experimental results show that KknowExpert performs comparably with some retrieval-based baselines while being time-efficient in inference, demonstrating the potential of our proposed direction.

Complex node interactions are common in knowledge graphs, and these interactions also contain rich knowledge information. However, traditional methods usually treat a triple as a training unit during the knowledge representation learning (KRL) procedure, neglecting contextualized information of the nodes in knowledge graphs (KGs). We generalize the modeling object to a very general form, which theoretically supports any subgraph extracted from the knowledge graph, and these subgraphs are fed into a novel transformer-based model to learn the knowledge embeddings. To broaden usage scenarios of knowledge, pre-trained language models are utilized to build a model that incorporates the learned knowledge representations. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves the state-of-the-art performance on several medical NLP tasks, and improvement above TransE indicates that our KRL method captures the graph contextualized information effectively.
Several recent efforts have been devoted to enhancing pre-trained language models (PLMs) by utilizing extra heterogeneous knowledge in knowledge graphs (KGs) and achieved consistent improvements on various knowledge-driven NLP tasks. However, most of these knowledge-enhanced PLMs embed static sub-graphs of KGs (knowledge context), regardless of that the knowledge required by PLMs may change dynamically according to specific text (textual context). In this paper, we propose a novel framework named Coke to dynamically select contextual knowledge and embed knowledge context according to textual context for PLMs, which can avoid the effect of redundant and ambiguous knowledge in KGs that cannot match the input text. Our experimental results show that Coke outperforms various baselines on typical knowledge-driven NLP tasks, indicating the effectiveness of utilizing dynamic knowledge context for language understanding. Besides the performance improvements, the dynamically selected knowledge in Coke can describe the semantics of text-related knowledge in a more interpretable form than the conventional PLMs. Our source code and datasets will be available to provide more details for Coke.
