Current news datasets merely focus on text features on the news and rarely leverage the feature of images, excluding numerous essential features for news classification. In this paper, we propose a new dataset, N15News, which is generated from New York Times with 15 categories and contains both text and image information in each news. We design a novel multitask multimodal network with different fusion methods, and experiments show multimodal news classification performs better than text-only news classification. Depending on the length of the text, the classification accuracy can be increased by up to 5.8%. Our research reveals the relationship between the performance of a multimodal classifier and its sub-classifiers, and also the possible improvements when applying multimodal in news classification. N15News is shown to have great potential to prompt the multimodal news studies.

Interpersonal language style shifting in dialogues is an interesting and almost instinctive ability of human. Understanding interpersonal relationship from language content is also a crucial step toward further understanding dialogues. Previous work mainly focuses on relation extraction between named entities in texts. In this paper, we propose the task of relation classification of interlocutors based on their dialogues. We crawled movie scripts from IMSDb, and annotated the relation labels for each session according to 13 pre-defined relationships. The annotated dataset DDRel consists of 6300 dyadic dialogue sessions between 694 pair of speakers with 53,126 utterances in total. We also construct session-level and pair-level relation classification tasks with widely-accepted baselines. The experimental results show that this task is challenging for existing models and the dataset will be useful for future research.
In this paper, we introduce How2, a multimodal collection of instructional videos with English subtitles and crowdsourced Portuguese translations. We also present integrated sequence-to-sequence baselines for machine translation, automatic speech recognition, spoken language translation, and multimodal summarization. By making available data and code for several multimodal natural language tasks, we hope to stimulate more research on these and similar challenges, to obtain a deeper understanding of multimodality in language processing.
As a kind of new expression elements, Internet memes are popular and extensively used in online chatting scenarios since they manage to make dialogues vivid, moving, and interesting. However, most current dialogue researches focus on text-only dialogue tasks. In this paper, we propose a new task named as textbf{M}eme incorporated textbf{O}pen-domain textbf{D}ialogue (MOD). Compared to previous dialogue tasks, MOD is much more challenging since it requires the model to understand the multimodal elements as well as the emotions behind them. To facilitate the MOD research, we construct a large-scale open-domain multimodal dialogue dataset incorporating abundant Internet memes into utterances. The dataset consists of $sim$45K Chinese conversations with $sim$606K utterances. Each conversation contains about $13$ utterances with about $4$ Internet memes on average and each utterance equipped with an Internet meme is annotated with the corresponding emotion. In addition, we present a simple and effective method, which utilizes a unified generation network to solve the MOD task. Experimental results demonstrate that our method trained on the proposed corpus is able to achieve expressive communication including texts and memes. The corpus and models have been publicly available at https://github.com/lizekang/DSTC10-MOD.
We present a new corpus for the Situated and Interactive Multimodal Conversations, SIMMC 2.0, aimed at building a successful multimodal assistant agent. Specifically, the dataset features 11K task-oriented dialogs (117K utterances) between a user and a virtual assistant on the shopping domain (fashion and furniture), grounded in situated and photo-realistic VR scenes. The dialogs are collected using a two-phase pipeline, which first generates simulated dialog flows via a novel multimodal dialog simulator we propose, followed by manual paraphrasing of the generated utterances. In this paper, we provide an in-depth analysis of the collected dataset, and describe in detail the four main benchmark tasks we propose for SIMMC 2.0. The preliminary analysis with a baseline model highlights the new challenges that the SIMMC 2.0 dataset brings, suggesting new directions for future research. Our dataset and code will be made publicly available.
Humor recognition in conversations is a challenging task that has recently gained popularity due to its importance in dialogue understanding, including in multimodal settings (i.e., text, acoustics, and visual). The few existing datasets for humor are mostly in English. However, due to the tremendous growth in multilingual content, there is a great demand to build models and systems that support multilingual information access. To this end, we propose a dataset for Multimodal Multiparty Hindi Humor (M2H2) recognition in conversations containing 6,191 utterances from 13 episodes of a very popular TV series Shrimaan Shrimati Phir Se. Each utterance is annotated with humor/non-humor labels and encompasses acoustic, visual, and textual modalities. We propose several strong multimodal baselines and show the importance of contextual and multimodal information for humor recognition in conversations. The empirical results on M2H2 dataset demonstrate that multimodal information complements unimodal information for humor recognition. The dataset and the baselines are available at http://www.iitp.ac.in/~ai-nlp-ml/resources.html and https://github.com/declare-lab/M2H2-dataset.
