This paper considers device-free sensing in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) cellular network to enable integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). A novel two-phase sensing framework is proposed to localize the passive targets that cannot transmit/receive reference signals to/from the base stations (BSs), where the ranges of the targets are estimated based on their reflected OFDM signals to the BSs in Phase I, and the location of each target is estimated based on its values of distance to the BSs in Phase II. Specifically, in Phase I, we design a model-free range estimation approach by leveraging the OFDM channel estimation technique for determining the delay values of all the BS-target-BS paths, which does not rely on any BS-target channel model. In Phase II, we reveal that ghost targets may be falsely detected in some cases as all the targets reflect the same signals to the BSs, which thus do not know how to match each estimated range with the right target. Interestingly, we show that the above issue is not a fundamental limitation for device-free sensing: under the ideal case of perfect range estimation in Phase I, the probability for ghost targets to exist is proved to be negligible when the targets are randomly located. Moreover, under the practical case of imperfect range estimation, we propose an efficient algorithm for joint range matching and target localization. Numerical results show that our proposed framework can achieve very high accuracy in the localization of passive targets, which increases with the system bandwidth.

A novel intercarrier interference (ICI)-aware orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channel estimation network ICINet is presented for rapidly time-varying channels. ICINet consists of two components: a preprocessing deep neural subnetwork (PreDNN) and a cascaded residual learning-based neural subnetwork (CasResNet). By fully taking into account the impact of ICI, the proposed PreDNN first refines the initial channel estimates in a subcarrier-wise fashion. In addition, the CasResNet is designed to further enhance the estimation accuracy. The proposed cascaded network is compatible with any pilot patterns and robust against mismatched system configurations. Simulation results verify the superiority of ICINet over existing networks in terms of better performance and much less complexity.
In this study, we propose a framework for chirp-based communications by exploiting discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM). We show that a well-designed frequency-domain spectral shaping (FDSS) filter for DFT-s-OFDM can convert its single-carrier nature to a linear combination of chirps circularly translated in the time domain. Also, by exploiting the properties of the Fourier series and Bessel function of the first kind, we analytically obtain the FDSS filter for an arbitrary chirp. We theoretically show that the chirps with low ripples in the frequency domain result in a lower bit-error ratio (BER) via less noise enhancement. We also address the noise enhancement by exploiting the repetitions in the frequency. The proposed framework offers a new way to efficiently synthesize chirps that can be used in Internet-of-Things (IoT), dual-function radar and communication (DFRC) or wireless sensing applications with existing DFT-s-OFDM transceivers.

In this letter, we propose to employ reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for enhancing the D2D underlaying system performance. We study the joint power control, receive beamforming, and passive beamforming for RIS assisted D2D underlaying cellular communication systems, which is formulated as a sum rate maximization problem. To address this issue, we develop a block coordinate descent method where uplink power, receive beamformer and refection phase shifts are alternatively optimized. Then, we provide the closed-form solutions for both uplink power and receive beamformer. We further propose a quadratic transform based semi-definite relaxation algorithm to optimize the RIS phase shifts, where the original passive beamforming problem is translated into a separable quadratically constrained quadratic problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RIS assisted design significantly improves the sum-rate performance.

In this paper, we consider hybrid beamforming designs for multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Aiming at maximizing the weighted spectral efficiency, we propose one alternating maximization framework where the analog precoding is optimized by Riemannian manifold optimization. If the digital precoding is optimized by a locally optimal algorithm, we obtain a locally optimal alternating maximization algorithm. In contrast, if we use a weighted minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based iterative algorithm for digital precoding, we obtain a suboptimal alternating maximization algorithm with reduced complexity in each iteration. By characterizing the upper bound of the weighted arithmetic and geometric means of mean square errors (MSEs), it is shown that the two alternating maximization algorithms have similar performance when the user specific weights do not have big differences. Verified by numerical results, the performance gap between the two alternating maximization algorithms becomes large when the ratio of the maximal and minimal weights among users is very large. Moreover, we also propose a low-complexity closed-form method without iterations. It employs matrix decomposition for the analog beamforming and weighted MMSE for the digital beamforming. Although it is not supposed to maximize the weighted spectral efficiency, it exhibits small performance deterioration compared to the two iterative alternating maximization algorithms and it qualifies as a good initialization for iterative algorithms, saving thereby iterations.
In this paper, we consider using deep neural network for OFDM symbol detection and demonstrate its performance advantages in combating large Doppler Shift. In particular, a new architecture named Cascade-Net is proposed for detection, where deep neural network is cascading with a zero-forcing preprocessor to prevent the network stucking in a saddle point or a local minimum point. In addition, we propose a sliding detection approach in order to detect OFDM symbols with large number of subcarriers. We evaluate this new architecture, as well as the sliding algorithm, using the Rayleigh channel with large Doppler spread, which could degrade detection performance in an OFDM system and is especially severe for high frequency band and mmWave communications. The numerical results of OFDM detection in SISO scenario show that cascade-net can achieve better performance than zero-forcing method while providing robustness against ill conditioned channels. We also show the better performance of the sliding cascade network (SCN) compared to sliding zero-forcing detector through numerical simulation.
