Moire excitons promise a new platform with which to generate and manipulate hybrid quantum phases of light and matter in unprecedented regimes of interaction strength. We explore the properties in this regime, through studies of a Bose-Hubbard model of excitons coupled to cavity photons. We show that the steady states exhibit a rich phase diagram with pronounced bi-stabilities governed by multi-photon resonances reflecting the strong inter-exciton interactions. In the presence of an incoherent pumping of excitons we find that the system can realise one- and multi-photon lasers.

The quest to realise strongly interacting photons remains an outstanding challenge both for fundamental science and for applications. Here, we explore mediated photon-photon interactions in a highly imbalanced two-component mixture of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. Using a theory that takes into account non-perturbative correlations between the excitons as well as strong light-matter coupling, we demonstrate the high tunability of an effective interaction between quasiparticles formed by minority component polaritons interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a majority component polaritons. In particular, the interaction, which is mediated by the exchange of sound modes in the BEC can be made strong enough to support a bound state of two quasiparticles. Since these quasiparticles consist partly of photons, this in turn corresponds to a dimer state of photons propagating through the BEC. This gives rise to a new light transmission line where the bound state wave function is directly mapped onto correlations between outgoing photons. Our findings open up new routes for realising highly non-linear optical materials and novel hybrid light-matter quantum systems.

We observe for the first time two-photon excited condensation of exciton-polaritons. The angle-resolved photoluminescence (PL) from the Lower Polariton (LP) ground state in our planar GaAs-based microcavity structure exhibits a clear intensity threshold as a function of increased two-photon excitation power, coinciding with an interaction-induced blueshift and a narrowing of spectral linewidth, characteristic of the transition from a thermal distribution of lower polaritons to polariton condensation. Two-Photon Absorption (TPA) is evidenced in the quadratic dependence of the input-output curves below and above the threshold region. Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) is ruled out by both this threshold behavior and by scanning the pump photon energy and observing a lack of dependence of the LP emission peak energy. Our results pave the way towards realization of a polariton-based stimulated THz radiation source, stemming from the dipole-allowed transition from the Quantum Well (QW) 2p dark exciton state to the 1s-exciton-based LP ground state, as theoretically predicted in [A. V. Kavokin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 197401 (2012)].

In this paper, we study the conditions under which on-site dissipations can induce non-Hermitian skin modes in non-Hermitian systems. When the original Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinless time-reversal symmetry, it is impossible to have skin modes; on the other hand, if the Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinful time-reversal symmetry, skin modes can be induced by on-site dissipations under certain circumstance. As a concrete example, we employ the Rice-Mele model to illustrate our results. Furthermore, we predict that the skin modes can be detected by the chiral tunneling effect, that is, the tunneling favors the direction where the skin modes are localized. Our work reveals a no-go theorem for the emergence of skin modes, and paves the way for searching for quantum systems with skin modes and studying their novel physical responses.
Mobile quantum impurities interacting with a fermionic bath form quasiparticles known as Fermi polarons. We demonstrate that a force applied to the bath particles can generate a drag force of similar magnitude acting on the impurities, realizing a novel, nonperturbative Coulomb drag effect. To prove this, we calculate the fully self-consistent, frequency-dependent transconductivity at zero temperature in the Baym-Kadanoff conserving approximation. We apply our theory to excitons and exciton polaritons interacting with a bath of charge carriers in a doped semiconductor embedded in a microcavity. In external electric and magnetic fields, the drag effect enables electrical control of excitons and may pave the way for the implementation of gauge fields for excitons and polaritons. Moreover, a reciprocal effect may facilitate optical manipulation of electron transport. Our findings establish transport measurements as a novel, powerful tool for probing the many-body physics of mobile quantum impurities.

We introduce non-Hermitian generalizations of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) which appear in the topological phase of a weakly dissipative Kitaev chain coupled to a Markovian bath. Notably, the presence of MZMs ensures that the steady state in the absence of decoherence events is two-fold degenerate. Within a stochastic wavefunction approach, the effective Hamiltonian governing the coherent, non-unitary dynamics retains BDI classification of the closed limit, but belongs to one of four non-Hermitian flavors of the ten-fold way. We argue for the stability of MZMs due to a generalization of particle-hole symmetry, and uncover the resulting topological phase diagram. Qualitative features of our study generalize to two-dimensional chiral superconductors. The dissipative superconducting chain can be mapped to an Ising model in a complex transverse field, and we discuss potential signatures of the degeneracy.
