When the transition temperature of a continuous phase transition is tuned to absolute zero, new ordered phases and physical behaviour emerge in the vicinity of the resulting quantum critical point. Sr3Ru2O7 can be tuned through quantum criticality with magnetic field at low temperature. Near its critical field Bc it displays the hallmark T-linear resistivity and a T log(1/T) electronic heat capacity behaviour of strange metals. However, these behaviours have not been related to any critical fluctuations. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to reveal the presence of collective spin fluctuations whose relaxation time and strength show a nearly singular variation with magnetic field as Bc is approached. The large increase in the electronic heat capacity and entropy near Bc can be understood quantitatively in terms of the scattering of conduction electrons by these spin-fluctuations. On entering the spin density wave (SDW) phase present near Bc, the fluctuations become stronger suggesting that the SDW order is stabilised through an order-by-disorder mechanism.

Neutron diffraction is used to investigate the field-induced, antiferromagnetically ordered state in the two-leg spin-ladder material (Hpip)2CuBr4. This classical phase, a consequence of weak interladder coupling, is nevertheless highly unconventional: its properties are influenced strongly by the spin Luttinger-liquid state of the ladder subunits. We determine directly the order parameter (transverse magnetization), the ordering temperature, the spin structure, and the critical exponents around the transition. We introduce a minimal, microscopic model for the interladder coupling and calculate the quantum fluctuation corrections to the mean-field interaction.
We study states with spontaneous spin current, emerging in frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-$S$ chains subject to a strong external magnetic field. As a numerical tool, we use a non-Abelian symmetry realization of the density matrix renormalization group. The field dependence of the order parameter and the critical exponents are presented for zigzag chains with S=1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2.
We study the thermoelectric response of a device containing a pair of helical edge states contacted at the same temperature $T$ and chemical potential $mu$ and connected to an external reservoir, with different chemical potential and temperature, through a side quantum dot. Different operational modes can be induced by applying a magnetic field $B$ and a gate voltage $V_g$ at the quantum dot. At finite $B$, the quantum dot acts simultaneously as a charge and a spin filter. Charge and spin currents are induced, not only through the quantum dot, but also along the edge states. We focus on linear response and analyze the regimes, which we identify as charge heat engines or refrigerator, spin heat engine and spin refrigerator.
We investigate the evolution of magnetic excitations in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ using a three band tight binding model that takes into account the influence of Mn and Ti dopant ions. The effect of dopant ions on the Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ band structure has been included by taking into account the dopant induced suppression of the oxygen octahedral rotation in the tight binding band structure and changes in electron occupation. We find that the low energy spin fluctuations are dominated by three wave vectors around Q=$((0,0),(pi/2,pi/2))$, and $(pi,0)$ which compete with each other. As the octahedral rotation is suppressed with increasing doping, the three wave vectors evolve differently. In particular, the undoped compound has dominant wavevectors at Q=$((0,0),(pi/2,pi/2))$, but doping Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ leads to a significant enhancement in the spin susceptibility at the Q=$(pi,0)$ wavevector bringing the system closer to a magnetic instability. All the features calculated from our model are in agreement with neutron scattering experiments. We have also studied the effect of a c-axis Zeeman field on the low energy spin fluctuations. We find that an increasing magnetic field suppresses the AFM fluctuations and leads to stronger competition between the AFM and FM spin fluctuations. The magnetic field dependence observed in our calculations therefore supports the scenario that the observed nematic phase in the metamagnetic region in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is intimately related to the presence of a competing ferromagnetic instability.

This paper demonstrates the anisotropic response of quantum critical fluctuations with respect to the direction of the magnetic field $B$ in Ni-doped CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the magnetization $M$ and specific heat $C$. The results show that $M/B$ at $B=0.1 {rm T}$ for both the tetragonal $c$ and $a$ directions exhibits $T^{-eta}$ dependencies, and that $C/T$ at $B=0$ follows a $-ln T$ function, which are the characteristics of non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behaviors. For $B,||,c$, both the $M/Bpropto T^{-eta}$ and $C/T propto -ln T$ dependencies change into nearly temperature-constant behaviors by increasing $B$, indicating a crossover from the NFL state to the Fermi-liquid state. For $B,||,a$, however, the NFL behavior in $C/T$ persists up to $B=7 {rm T}$, whereas $M/B$ exhibits temperature-independent behavior for $Bge 1 {rm T}$. These contrasting characteristics in $M/B$ and $C/T$ reflect the anisotropic nature of quantum critical fluctuations; the $c$-axis spin component significantly contributes to the quantum critical fluctuations. We compare this anisotropic behavior of the spin fluctuations to superconducting properties in pure CeCoIn$_5$, especially to the anisotropy in the upper critical field and the Ising-like characteristics in the spin resonance excitation, and suggest a close relationship between them.
