Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that influences the communication and social behavior of a person in a way that those in the spectrum have difficulty in perceiving other peoples facial expressions, as well as presenting and communicating emotions and affect via their own faces and bodies. Some efforts have been made to predict and improve children with ASDs affect states in play therapy, a common method to improve childrens social skills via play and games. However, many previous works only used pre-trained models on benchmark emotion datasets and failed to consider the distinction in emotion between typically developing children and children with autism. In this paper, we present an open-source two-stage multi-modal approach leveraging acoustic and visual cues to predict three main affect states of children with ASDs affect states (positive, negative, and neutral) in real-world play therapy scenarios, and achieved an overall accuracy of 72:40%. This work presents a novel way to combine human expertise and machine intelligence for ASD affect recognition by proposing a two-stage schema.

Robot Assisted Therapy is a new paradigm in many therapies such as the therapy of children with autism spectrum disorder. In this paper we present the use of a parrot-like robot as an assistive tool in turn taking therapy. The therapy is designed in the form of a card game between a child with autism and a therapist or the robot. The intervention was implemented in a single subject study format and the effect sizes for different turn taking variables are calculated. The results show that the child robot interaction had larger effect size than the child trainer effect size in most of the turn taking variables. Furthermore the therapist point of view on the proposed Robot Assisted Therapy is evaluated using a questionnaire. The therapist believes that the robot is appealing to children which may ease the therapy process. The therapist suggested to add other functionalities and games to let children with autism to learn more turn taking tasks and better generalize the learned tasks
Human affective recognition is an important factor in human-computer interaction. However, the method development with in-the-wild data is not yet accurate enough for practical usage. In this paper, we introduce the affective recognition method focusing on facial expression (EXP) and valence-arousal calculation that was submitted to the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) 2021 Contest. When annotating facial expressions from a video, we thought that it would be judged not only from the features common to all people, but also from the relative changes in the time series of individuals. Therefore, after learning the common features for each frame, we constructed a facial expression estimation model and valence-arousal model using time-series data after combining the common features and the standardized features for each video. Furthermore, the above features were learned using multi-modal data such as image features, AU, Head pose, and Gaze. In the validation set, our model achieved a facial expression score of 0.546. These verification results reveal that our proposed framework can improve estimation accuracy and robustness effectively.
Traditional regression models do not generalize well when learning from small and noisy datasets. Here we propose a novel metamodel structure to improve the regression result. The metamodel is composed of multiple classification base models and a regression model built upon the base models. We test this structure on the prediction of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) severity as measured by the ADOS communication (ADOS COMM) score from resting-state fMRI data, using a variety of base models. The metamodel outperforms traditional regression models as measured by the Pearson correlation coefficient between true and predicted scores and stability. In addition, we found that the metamodel is more flexible and more generalizable.
Scientific literature contains large volumes of complex, unstructured figures that are compound in nature (i.e. composed of multiple images, graphs, and drawings). Separation of these compound figures is critical for information retrieval from these figures. In this paper, we propose a new strategy for compound figure separation, which decomposes the compound figures into constituent subfigures while preserving the association between the subfigures and their respective caption components. We propose a two-stage framework to address the proposed compound figure separation problem. In particular, the subfigure label detection module detects all subfigure labels in the first stage. Then, in the subfigure detection module, the detected subfigure labels help to detect the subfigures by optimizing the feature selection process and providing the global layout information as extra features. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed framework, which improves the detection precision by 9%.
Despite their continued popularity, categorical approaches to affect recognition have limitations, especially in real-life situations. Dimensional models of affect offer important advantages for the recognition of subtle expressions and more fine-grained analysis. We introduce a simple but effective facial expression analysis (FEA) system for dimensional affect, solely based on geometric features and Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression. The system jointly learns to estimate Arousal and Valence ratings from a set of facial images. The proposed approach is robust, efficient, and exhibits comparable performance to contemporary deep learning models, while requiring a fraction of the computational resources.
