As a key technology in the 5G era, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has developed rapidly in recent years. MEC aims to reduce the service delay of mobile users, while alleviating the processing pressure on the core network. MEC can be regarded as an extension of cloud computing on the user side, which can deploy edge servers and bring computing resources closer to mobile users, and provide more efficient interactions. However, due to the users dynamic mobility, the distance between the user and the edge server will change dynamically, which may cause fluctuations in Quality of Service (QoS). Therefore, when a mobile user moves in the MEC environment, certain approaches are needed to schedule services deployed on the edge server to ensure the user experience. In this paper, we model service scheduling in MEC scenarios and propose a delay-aware and mobility-aware service management approach based on concise probabilistic methods. This approach has low computational complexity and can effectively reduce service delay and migration costs. Furthermore, we conduct experiments by utilizing multiple realistic datasets and use iFogSim to evaluate the performance of the algorithm. The results show that our proposed approach can optimize the performance on service delay, with 8% to 20% improvement and reduce the migration cost by more than 75% compared with baselines during the rush hours.

The development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology enables the rapid growth of connected smart devices and mobile applications. However, due to the constrained resources and limited battery capacity, there are bottlenecks when utilizing the smart devices. Mobile edge computing (MEC) offers an attractive paradigm to handle this challenge. In this work, we concentrate on the MEC application for IoT and deal with the energy saving objective via offloading workloads between cloud and edge. In this regard, we firstly identify the energy-related challenges in MEC. Then we present a green-aware framework for MEC to address the energy-related challenges, and provide a generic model formulation for the green MEC. We also discuss some state-of-the-art workloads offloading approaches to achieve green IoT and compare them in comprehensive perspectives. Finally, some future research directions related to energy efficiency in MEC are given.
Internet of Things (IoT) is considered as the enabling platform for a variety of promising applications, such as smart transportation and smart city, where massive devices are interconnected for data collection and processing. These IoT applications pose a high demand on storage and computing capacity, while the IoT devices are usually resource-constrained. As a potential solution, mobile edge computing (MEC) deploys cloud resources in the proximity of IoT devices so that their requests can be better served locally. In this work, we investigate computation offloading in a dynamic MEC system with multiple edge servers, where computational tasks with various requirements are dynamically generated by IoT devices and offloaded to MEC servers in a time-varying operating environment (e.g., channel condition changes over time). The objective of this work is to maximize the completed tasks before their respective deadlines and minimize energy consumption. To this end, we propose an end-to-end Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach to select the best edge server for offloading and allocate the optimal computational resource such that the expected long-term utility is maximized. The simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the existing methods.
The amount of CO$_2$ emitted per kilowatt-hour on an electricity grid varies by time of day and substantially varies by location due to the types of generation. Networked collections of warehouse scale computers, sometimes called Hyperscale Computing, emit more carbon than needed if operated without regard to these variations in carbon intensity. This paper introduces Googles system for Carbon-Intelligent Compute Management, which actively minimizes electricity-based carbon footprint and power infrastructure costs by delaying temporally flexible workloads. The core component of the system is a suite of analytical pipelines used to gather the next days carbon intensity forecasts, train day-ahead demand prediction models, and use risk-aware optimization to generate the next days carbon-aware Virtual Capacity Curves (VCCs) for all datacenter clusters across Googles fleet. VCCs impose hourly limits on resources available to temporally flexible workloads while preserving overall daily capacity, enabling all such workloads to complete within a day. Data from operation shows that VCCs effectively limit hourly capacity when the grids energy supply mix is carbon intensive and delay the execution of temporally flexible workloads to greener times.
While mobile edge computing (MEC) alleviates the computation and power limitations of mobile devices, additional latency is incurred when offloading tasks to remote MEC servers. In this work, the power-delay tradeoff in the context of task offloading is studied in a multi-user MEC scenario. In contrast with current system designs relying on average metrics (e.g., the average queue length and average latency), a novel network design is proposed in which latency and reliability constraints are taken into account. This is done by imposing a probabilistic constraint on users task queue lengths and invoking results from extreme value theory to characterize the occurrence of low-probability events in terms of queue length (or queuing delay) violation. The problem is formulated as a computation and transmit power minimization subject to latency and reliability constraints, and solved using tools from Lyapunov stochastic optimization. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, while examining the power-delay tradeoff and required computational resources for various computation intensities.
With the advance in mobile computing, Internet of Things, and ubiquitous wireless connectivity, social sensing based edge computing (SSEC) has emerged as a new computation paradigm where people and their personally owned devices collect sensor measurements from the physical world and process them at the edge of the network. This paper focuses on a privacy-aware task allocation problem where the goal is to optimize the computation task allocation in SSEC systems while respecting the users customized privacy settings. It introduces a novel Game-theoretic Privacy-aware Task Allocation (G-PATA) framework to achieve the goal. G-PATA includes (i) a bottom-up game-theoretic model to generate the maximum payoffs at end devices while satisfying the end users privacy settings; (ii) a top-down incentive scheme to adjust the rewards for the tasks to ensure that the task allocation decisions made by end devices meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the applications. Furthermore, the framework incorporates an efficient load balancing and iteration reduction component to adapt to the dynamic changes in status and privacy configurations of end devices. The G-PATA framework was implemented on a real-world edge computing platform that consists of heterogeneous end devices (Jetson TX1 and TK1 boards, and Raspberry Pi3). We compare G-PATA with state-of-the-art task allocation schemes through two real-world social sensing applications. The results show that G-PATA significantly outperforms existing approaches under various privacy settings (our scheme achieved as much as 47% improvements in delay reduction for the application and 15% more payoffs for end devices compared to the baselines.).
