We present a first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of pyrolusite ($beta$-MnO$_2$) using conventional and extended Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory (DFT+$U$ and DFT+$U$+$V$). The onsite $U$ and intersite $V$ Hubbard parameters are computed using linear-response theory in the framework of density-functional perturbation theory. We show that while the inclusion of the onsite $U$ is crucial to describe the localized nature of the Mn($3d$) states, the intersite $V$ is key to capture accurately the strong hybridization between neighboring Mn($3d$) and O($2p$) states. In this framework, we stabilize the simplified collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering (suggested by the Goodenough-Kanamori rule) that is commonly used as an approximation to the experimentally-observed noncollinear screw-type spiral magnetic ordering. A detailed investigation of the ferromagnetic and of other three collinear AFM spin configurations is also presented. The findings from Hubbard-corrected DFT are discussed using two kinds of Hubbard manifolds - nonorthogonalized and orthogonalized atomic orbitals - showing that special attention must be given to the choice of the Hubbard projectors, with orthogonalized manifolds providing more accurate results than nonorthogonalized ones within DFT+$U$+$V$. This work paves the way for future studies of complex transition-metal compounds containing strongly localized electrons in the presence of pronounced covalent interactions.

We propose, on the basis of our first principles density functional based calculations, a new isomer of graphane, in which the C-H bonds of a hexagon alternate in 3-up, 3-down fashion on either side of the sheet. This 2D puckered structure called stirrup has got a comparable stability with the previously discovered chair and boat conformers of graphane. The physico-chemical properties of this third conformer are found to be similar to the other two conformers of graphane with an insulating direct band gap of 3.1 eV at the {Gamma} point. Any other alternative hydrogenation of the graphene sheet disrupts its symmetric puckered geometry and turns out to be energetically less favorable.
Contradictory theoretical results for oxygen vacancies in SrTiO$_3$ (STO) were often related to the peculiar properties of STO, which is a $d^0$ transition metal oxide with mixed ionic-covalent bonding. Here, we apply, for the first time, density functional theory (DFT) within the extended Hubbard DFT+$U$+$V$ approach, including on-site as well as inter-site electronic interactions, to study oxygen-deficient STO with Hubbard $U$ and $V$ parameters computed self-consistently via density-functional perturbation theory. Our results demonstrate that the extended Hubbard functional is a promising approach to study defects in materials with electronic properties similar to STO. Indeed, DFT+$U$+$V$ provides a better description of stoichiometric STO compared to standard DFT or DFT+$U$, the band gap and crystal field splitting being in good agreement with experiments. In turn, also the description of the electronic properties of oxygen vacancies in STO is improved, with formation energies in excellent agreement with experiments as well as results obtained with the most frequently used hybrid functionals, however at a fraction of the computational cost. While our results do not fully resolve the contradictory findings reported in literature, our systematic approach leads to a deeper understanding of their origin, which stems from different cell sizes, STO phases, the exchange-correlation functional, and the treatment of structural relaxations and spin-polarization.
First-principles calculations, in combination with the four-state energy mapping method, are performed to extract the magnetic interaction parameters of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Such parameters include the symmetric exchange (SE) couplings and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions up to second nearest neighbors, as well as the single ion anisotropy (SIA). All magnetic parameters are obtained not only for the $R3c$ structural ground state, but also for the $R3m$ and $Rbar{3}c$ phases in order to determine the effects of ferroelectricity and antiferrodistortion distortions, respectively, on these magnetic parameters. In particular, two different second-nearest neighbor couplings are identified and their origins are discussed in details. Moreover, Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations using a magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating these first-principles-derived interaction parameters are further performed. They result (i) not only in the accurate prediction of the spin-canted G-type antiferromagnetic structure and of the known magnetic cycloid propagating along a $<$1$bar{1}$0$>$ direction, as well as their unusual characteristics (such as a weak magnetization and spin-density-waves, respectively); (ii) but also in the finding of another cycloidal state of low-energy and that awaits to be experimentally confirmed. Turning on and off the different magnetic interaction parameters in the MC simulations also reveal the precise role of each of them on magnetism.
The electronic structure and properties of PuO$_{2}$ and Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$ have been studied from first principles by the all-electron projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method. The local density approximation (LDA)+$U$ and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+$U$ formalism have been used to account for the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized Pu $5f$ electrons. We discuss how the properties of PuO$_{2}$ and Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$ are affected by the choice of $U$ as well as the choice of exchange-correlation potential. Also, oxidation reaction of Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$, leading to formation of PuO$_{2}$, and its dependence on $U$ and exchange-correlation potential have been studied. Our results show that by choosing an appropriate $U$ it is promising to correctly and consistently describe structural, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of PuO$_{2}$ and Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$, which enables it possible the modeling of redox process involving Pu-based materials.
Antiferromagnetic spintronics is an on-going growing field of research. Employing both standard density functional theory and the $GW$ approximation within the framework of the FLAPW method, we study the electronic and magnetic properties of seven potential antiferromagnetic semiconducting Heusler compounds with 18 (or 28 when Zn is present) valence electrons per unit cell. We show that in these compounds G-type antiferromagnetism is the ground state and that they are all either emiconductors (Cr$_2$ScP, Cr$_2$TiZn, V$_2$ScP, V$_2$TiSi, and V$_3$Al) or semimetals (Mn$_2$MgZn and Mn$_2$NaAl). The many-body corrections have a minimal effect on the electronic band structure with respect to the standard electronic structure calculations.
