First-principles calculations, in combination with the four-state energy mapping method, are performed to extract the magnetic interaction parameters of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Such parameters include the symmetric exchange (SE) couplings and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions up to second nearest neighbors, as well as the single ion anisotropy (SIA). All magnetic parameters are obtained not only for the $R3c$ structural ground state, but also for the $R3m$ and $Rbar{3}c$ phases in order to determine the effects of ferroelectricity and antiferrodistortion distortions, respectively, on these magnetic parameters. In particular, two different second-nearest neighbor couplings are identified and their origins are discussed in details. Moreover, Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations using a magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating these first-principles-derived interaction parameters are further performed. They result (i) not only in the accurate prediction of the spin-canted G-type antiferromagnetic structure and of the known magnetic cycloid propagating along a $<$1$bar{1}$0$>$ direction, as well as their unusual characteristics (such as a weak magnetization and spin-density-waves, respectively); (ii) but also in the finding of another cycloidal state of low-energy and that awaits to be experimentally confirmed. Turning on and off the different magnetic interaction parameters in the MC simulations also reveal the precise role of each of them on magnetism.

We find unusually large cross-polarized (and anti-symmetric) Raman signature of A$_{rm g}$ phonon mode in CrI$_3$, in agreement with experiments. The signal is present only when the following three effects are considered in concert: ferromagnetism on Cr atoms, spin-orbit interaction, and resonant effects. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that the relevant spin-orbit interaction potential originates from iodine atoms, despite magnetism being mostly on chromium atoms. We analyze the Raman signature as a function of magnetic order, the direction of the magnetic moment, energy and polarization of light used for Raman scattering, as well as carrier lifetime. In addition to a strong cross-polarized Raman signal, we also find unusually strong phonon modulated magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) in CrI$_3$.
Using density functional theory (DFT) methods, we have calculated X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra in bulk and thin films of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, CrI$_3$, and CrGeTe$_3$. DFT+$U$ methods are employed for better handling of correlation effects of 3$d$ electrons of transition metals. We discuss relations between the density of states, radial matrix elements, and the corresponding spectra. By comparing the calculated spectra with previously measured spectra, we discuss the reliability of DFT+$U$ methods to describe the electronic structures of these materials and determine the corresponding optimal $U$ and $J$ parameters.
Recent experiments revealed that monolayer $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ can be obtain by chemical exfoliation method and exfoliation or restacking of nanosheets can manipulate the magnetic properties of the materials. In this present paper, the electronic and magnetic properties of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ monolayer are investigated by combining first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. From first-principles calculations, we found that the spin configuration FM corresponds to the ground state for $alpha$-RuCl$_3$, however, the other excited zigzag oriented spin configuration has energy of 5 meV/atom higher than the ground state. Energy band gap has been obtained as $3$ meV using PBE functionals. When spin-orbit coupling effect is taken into account, corresponding energy gap is determined to be as $57$ meV. We also investigate the effect of Hubbard U energy terms on the electronic band structure of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ monolayer and revealed band gap increases approximately linear with increasing U value. Moreover, spin-spin coupling terms ($J_1$, $J_2$, $J_3$) have been obtained using first principles calculations. By benefiting from these terms, Monte Carlo simulations with single site update Metropolis algorithm have been implemented to elucidate magnetic properties of the considered system. Thermal variations of magnetization, susceptibility and also specific heat curves indicate that monolayer $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ exhibits a phase transition between ordered and disordered phases at the Curie temperature $14.21$ K. We believe that this study can be utilized to improve two-dimensional magnet materials.
Yttrium Iron Garnet is the ubiquitous magnetic insulator used for studying pure spin currents. The exchange constants reported in the literature vary considerably between different experiments and fitting procedures. Here we calculate them from first-principles. The local Coulomb correction (U - J) of density functional theory is chosen such that the parameterized spin model reproduces the experimental Curie temperature and a large electronic band gap, ensuring an insulating phase. The magnon spectrum calculated with our parameters agrees reasonably well with that measured by neutron scattering. A residual disagreement about the frequencies of optical modes indicates the limits of the present methodology.

We present a first-principles investigation of structural and elastic properties of experimentally observed phases of bulk SrRuO$_3$ - namely orthorhombic, tetragonal, and cubic - by applying density functional theory (DFT) approximations. At first, we focus our attention on the accuracy of calculated lattice constants in order to find out DFT approaches that best represent the crystalline structure of SrRuO$_3$, since many important physical quantities crucially depend on change in volume. Next, we evaluate single-crystal elastic constants, mechanical stability, and macroscopic elastic parameters trying to at least partially compensate for the existing lack of information about these fundamental features of SrRuO$_3$. Finally, we analyze the anomalous behavior of low-temperature orthorhombic phase under $C_{44}$ related shear deformation. It turns out that at critical strain values the system exhibits a distinct deviation from the initial behavior which results in an isosymmetric phase transition. Moreover, under $C_{44}$ related shear deformation tetragonal SrRuO3 becomes mechanically unstable raising an open question of what makes it experimentally observable at high temperatures.
