In high speed CNC (Compute Numerical Control) machining, the feed rate scheduling has played an important role to ensure machining quality and machining efficiency. In this paper, a novel feed rate scheduling method is proposed for generating smooth feed rate profile conveniently with the consideration of both geometric error and kinematic error. First, a relationship between feed rate value and chord error is applied to determine the feed rate curve. Then, breaking points, which can split whole curve into several blocks, can be found out using proposed two step screening method. For every block, a feed rate profile based on the Sigmoid function is generated. With the consideration of kinematic limitation and machining efficiency, a time-optimal feed rate adjustment algorithm is proposed to further adjust feed rate value at breaking points. After planning feed rate profile for each block, all blocks feed rate profile will be connected smoothly. The resulting feed rate profile is more concise compared with the polynomial profile and more efficient compared with the trigonometric profile. Finally, simulations with two free-form NURBS curves are conducted and comparison with the sine-curve method are carried out to verify the feasibility and applicability of the proposed method.

Feedrate scheduling is a key step in computer numerical control (CNC) machining, as it has a close relationship with machining time and surface quality, and has now become a hot issue in industry and academia. To reduce high chord errors and round-off errors, and generate continuous velocity, acceleration, and jerk profile of parametric interpolation, a novel and complete S-shape based feedrate scheduling algorithm is presented in this paper. The algorithm consists of three modules: bidirectional scanning module, velocity scheduling module and round-off error elimination module. The bidirectional scanning module with the limitations of chord error, normal acceleration/jerk and command feedrate aims to guarantee the continuity of the feed rate at the junctions between successive NURBS sub-curves. After the NURBS sub-curves have been classified into two cases, the velocity scheduling module firstly calculates the actual maximum federate, and then generates the feed rate profiles of all NURBS sub-curves according to our velocity scheduling function. Later, the round-off error elimination module is proposed to make the total interpolating time become an integer multiple of the interpolation period, which leads to the elimination of round-off errors. Finally, benchmarks are conducted to verify the applicability of the proposed method compared with some other methods.
In this paper, we shed new light on a classical scheduling problem: given a slot-timed, constant-capacity server, what short-run scheduling decisions must be made to provide long-run service guarantees to competing flows of unit-sized tasks? We model the flows long-run guarantees as worst-case services that map each arrival vector recording a flows cumulative task arrivals to a worst-case acceptable departure vector lower-bounding its cumulative task departures. We show that these services are states that can be updated as tasks arrive and depart, introduce state-based scheduling, and find the schedulability condition that must be preserved to maintain all flows long-run guarantees. We then use this condition to identify, in each slot, all short-run scheduling decisions that preserve schedulability. To illustrate how scheduling complexity can be reduced, we additionally show that special schedules can be efficiently identified by maximizing the servers capacity slack, and that special services can be efficiently specified and updated using properties of the min-plus algebra.
This paper presents a novel solution technique for scheduling multi-energy system (MES) in a commercial urban building to perform price-based demand response and reduce energy costs. The MES scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP), a non-convex NPhard problem with uncertainties due to renewable generation and demand. A model predictive control approach is used to handle the uncertainties and price variations. This in-turn requires solving a time-coupled multi-time step MINLP during each time-epoch which is computationally intensive. This investigation proposes an approach called the Scenario-Based Branch-and-Bound (SB3), a light-weight solver to reduce the computational complexity. It combines the simplicity of convex programs with the ability of meta-heuristic techniques to handle complex nonlinear problems. The performance of the SB3 solver is validated in the Cleantech building, Singapore and the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces energy cost by about 17.26% and 22.46% as against solving a multi-time step heuristic optimization model.
In this research, a new data mining-based design approach has been developed for designing complex mechanical systems such as a crashworthy passenger car with uncertainty modeling. The method allows exploring the big crash simulation dataset to design the vehicle at multi-levels in a top-down manner (main energy absorbing system, components, and geometric features) and derive design rules based on the whole vehicle body safety requirements to make decisions towards the component and sub-component level design. Full vehicle and component simulation datasets are mined to build decision trees, where the interrelationship among parameters can be revealed and the design rules are derived to produce designs with good performance. This method has been extended by accounting for the uncertainty in the design variables. A new decision tree algorithm for uncertain data (DTUD) is developed to produce the desired designs and evaluate the design performance variations due to the uncertainty in design variables. The framework of this method is implemented by combining the design of experiments (DOE) and crash finite element analysis (FEA) and then demonstrated by designing a passenger car subject to front impact. The results show that the new methodology could achieve the design objectives efficiently and effectively. By applying the new method, the reliability of the final designs is also increased greatly. This approach has the potential to be applied as a general design methodology for a wide range of complex structures and mechanical systems.
A novel method for computing reachable sets is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation with running cost functionis numerically solved and the reachable sets of different time horizons are characterized by a family of non-zero level sets of the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. In addition to the classical reachable set, by setting different running cost functions and terminal conditionsof the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, the proposed method allows to compute more generalized reachable sets, which are referred to as cost-limited reachable sets. In order to overcome the difficulty of solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation caused by the discontinuity of the solution, a method based on recursion and grid interpolation is employed. At the end of this paper, some examples are taken to illustrate the validity and generality of the proposed method.
