This article develops the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology for weather radar sensing. There are ample advantages of MIMO that have been highlighted that can improve the spatial resolution of the observations and also the accuracy of the radar variables. These concepts have been introduced here pertaining to weather radar observations with supporting simulations demonstrating improvements to existing phased array technology. Already MIMO is being used in a big way for hard target detection and tracking and also in the automotive radar industry and it offers similar improvements for weather radar observations. Some of the benefits are discussed here with a phased array platform in mind which offers quadrant outputs.

In this paper, we describe the evolution of a pair of polyphase coded waveform for use in second trip suppression in weather radar. The polyphase codes were designed and tested on NASA weather radar. The NASA dual-frequency, dual-polarization Doppler radar (D3R) was developed primarily as a ground validation tool for the GPM satellite dual-frequency radar. Recently, the D3R radar was upgraded with n

Subspace methods are essential to high-resolution environment sensing in the emerging unmanned systems, if further combined with the millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technique. The estimation of signal/noise subspace, as one critical step, is yet computationally complex and presents a particular challenge when developing high-resolution yet low-complexity automotive radars. In this work, we develop a fast randomized-MUSIC (R-MUSIC) algorithm, which exploits the random matrix sketching to estimate the signal subspace via approximated computation. Our new approach substantially reduces the time complexity in acquiring a high-quality signal subspace. Moreover, the accuracy of R-MUSIC suffers no degradation unlike others low-complexity counterparts, i.e. the high-resolution angle of arrival (AoA) estimation is attained. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the performance of our R-MUSIC method. As shown, it resolves the long-standing contradiction in complexity and accuracy of MIMO radar signal processing, which hence have great potentials in real-time super-resolution automotive sensing.
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars are being increasingly integrated in commercial vehicles to support new Adaptive Driver Assisted Systems (ADAS) features that require accurate location and Doppler velocity estimates of objects, independent of environmental conditions. To explore radar-based ADAS applications, we have updated our test-bed with Texas Instruments 4-chip cascaded FMCW radar (TIDEP-01012) that forms a non-uniform 2D MIMO virtual array. In this paper, we develop the necessary received signal models for applying different direction of arrival (DoA) estimation algorithms and experimentally validating their performance on formed virtual array under controlled scenarios. To test the robustness of mmWave radars under adverse weather conditions, we collected raw radar dataset (I-Q samples post demodulated) for various objects by a driven vehicle-mounted platform, specifically for snowy and foggy situations where cameras are largely ineffective. Initial results from radar imaging algorithms to this dataset are presented.
This paper investigates the hybrid precoding design for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with finite-alphabet inputs. The precoding problem is a joint optimization of analog and digital precoders, and we treat it as a matrix factorization problem with power and constant modulus constraints. Our work presents three main contributions: First, we present a sufficient condition and a necessary condition for hybrid precoding schemes to realize unconstrained optimal precoders exactly when the number of data streams Ns satisfies Ns = minfrank(H);Nrfg, where H represents the channel matrix and Nrf is the number of radio frequency (RF) chains. Second, we show that the coupled power constraint in our matrix factorization problem can be removed without loss of optimality. Third, we propose a Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS)-based algorithm to solve our matrix factorization problem using gradient and Hessian information. Several numerical results are provided to show that our proposed algorithm outperforms existing hybrid precoding algorithms.
In this paper we presented mmPose-NLP, a novel Natural Language Processing (NLP) inspired Sequence-to-Sequence (Seq2Seq) skeletal key-point estimator using millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar data. To the best of the authors knowledge, this is the first method to precisely estimate upto 25 skeletal key-points using mmWave radar data alone. Skeletal pose estimation is critical in several applications ranging from autonomous vehicles, traffic monitoring, patient monitoring, gait analysis, to defense security forensics, and aid both preventative and actionable decision making. The use of mmWave radars for this task, over traditionally employed optical sensors, provide several advantages, primarily its operational robustness to scene lighting and adverse weather conditions, where optical sensor performance degrade significantly. The mmWave radar point-cloud (PCL) data is first voxelized (analogous to tokenization in NLP) and $N$ frames of the voxelized radar data (analogous to a text paragraph in NLP) is subjected to the proposed mmPose-NLP architecture, where the voxel indices of the 25 skeletal key-points (analogous to keyword extraction in NLP) are predicted. The voxel indices are converted back to real world 3-D coordinates using the voxel dictionary used during the tokenization process. Mean Absolute Error (MAE) metrics were used to measure the accuracy of the proposed system against the ground truth, with the proposed mmPose-NLP offering <3 cm localization errors in the depth, horizontal and vertical axes. The effect of the number of input frames vs performance/accuracy was also studied for N = {1,2,..,10}. A comprehensive methodology, results, discussions and limitations are presented in this paper. All the source codes and results are made available on GitHub for furthering research and development in this critical yet emerging domain of skeletal key-point estimation using mmWave radars.
