Radio frequency (RF) wireless energy transfer (WET) is a key technology that may allow seamlessly powering future massive low-energy Internet of Things (IoT) networks. To enable efficient massive WET, channel state information (CSI)-limited/free multi-antenna transmit schemes have been recently proposed in the literature. The idea is to reduce/null the energy costs to be paid by energy harvesting (EH) IoT nodes from participating in large-scale time/power-consuming CSI training, but still enable some transmit spatial gains. In this paper, we take another step forward by proposing a novel CSI-free rotary antenna beamforming (RAB) WET scheme that outperforms all state-of-the-art CSI-free schemes in a scenario where a power beacon (PB) equipped with a uniform linear array (ULA) powers a large set of surrounding EH IoT devices. RAB uses a properly designed CSI-free beamformer combined with a continuous or periodic rotation of the ULA at the PB to provide average EH gains that scale as $0.85sqrt{M}$, where $M$ is the number of PBs antenna elements. Moreover, a rotation-specific power control mechanism was proposed to i) fairly optimize the WET process if devices positioning information is available, and/or ii) to avoid hazards to human health in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). We show that RAB performance even approaches quickly (or surpasses, for scenarios with sufficiently large number of EH devices, or when using the proposed power control) the performance of a traditional full-CSI based transmit scheme, and it is also less sensitive to SAR constraints. Finally, we discuss important practicalities related to RAB such as its robustness against non line-of-sight conditions compared to other CSI-free WET schemes, and its generalizability to scenarios where the PB uses other than a ULA topology.

Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a promising solution to enable massive machine-type communications (mMTC) with low-complexity and low-powered wireless devices. Given the energy restrictions of the devices, instant channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is not expected to be available in practical WET-enabled mMTC. However, because it is common that the terminals appear spatially clustered, some degree of spatial correlation between their channels to the base station (BS) is expected to occur. The paper considers a massive antenna array at the BS for WET that only has access to i) the first and second order statistics of the Rician channel component of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel and also to ii) the line-of-sight MIMO component. The optimal precoding scheme that maximizes the total energy available to the single-antenna devices is derived considering a continuous alphabet for the precoders, permitting any modulated or deterministic waveform. This may lead to some devices in the clusters being assigned a low fraction of the total available power in the cluster, creating a rather uneven situation among them. Consequently, a fairness criterion is introduced, imposing a minimum amount of power allocated to the terminals. A piece-wise linear harvesting circuit is considered at the terminals, with both saturation and a minimum sensitivity, and a constrained version of the precoder is also proposed by solving a non-linear programming problem. A paramount benefit of the constrained precoder is the encompassment of fairness in the power allocation to the different clusters. Moreover, given the polynomial complexity increase of the proposed unconstrained precoder, and the observed linear gain of the systems available sum-power with an increasing number of antennas at the ULA, the use of massive antenna arrays is desirable.

This paper studies unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless communication, where a rotarywing UAV is dispatched to send/collect data to/from multiple ground nodes (GNs). We aim to minimize the total UAV energy consumption, including both propulsion energy and communication related energy, while satisfying the communication throughput requirement of each GN. To this end, we first derive an analytical propulsion power consumption model for rotary-wing UAVs, and then formulate the energy minimization problem by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and communication time allocation among GNs, as well as the total mission completion time. The problem is difficult to be optimally solved, as it is non-convex and involves infinitely many variables over time. To tackle this problem, we first consider the simple fly-hover-communicate design, where the UAV successively visits a set of hovering locations and communicates with one corresponding GN when hovering at each location. For this design, we propose an efficient algorithm to optimize the hovering locations and durations, as well as the flying trajectory connecting these hovering locations, by leveraging the travelling salesman problem (TSP) and convex optimization techniques. Next, we consider the general case where the UAV communicates also when flying. We propose a new path discretization method to transform the original problem into a discretized equivalent with a finite number of optimization variables, for which we obtain a locally optimal solution by applying the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results show the significant performance gains of the proposed designs over benchmark schemes, in achieving energy-efficient communication with rotary-wing UAVs.
This paper investigates the impact of the channel state information (CSI) and antenna correlation at the multi-antenna relay on the performance of wireless powered dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying systems. Depending on the available CSI at the relay, two different scenarios are considered, namely, instantaneous CSI and statistical CSI where the relay has access only to the antenna correlation matrix. Adopting the power-splitting architecture, we present a detailed performance study for both cases. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the outage probability and ergodic capacity. In addition, simple high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) outage approximations are obtained. Our results show that, antenna correlation itself does not affect the achievable diversity order, the availability of CSI at the relay determines the achievable diversity order. Full diversity order can be achieved with instantaneous CSI, while only a diversity order of one can be achieved with statistical CSI. In addition, the transmit antenna correlation and receive antenna correlation exhibit different impact on the ergodic capacity. Moreover, the impact of antenna correlation on the ergodic capacity also depends heavily on the available CSI and operating SNR.
In this work, we investigate hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HBF) architectures for uplink cell-free (CF) millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. {We first propose two HBF schemes, namely, decentralized HBF (D-HBF) and semi-centralized HBF (SC-HBF). In the former, both the digital and analog beamformers are generated independently at each AP based on the local channel state information (CSI). In contrast, in the latter, only the digital beamformer is obtained locally at the AP, whereas the analog beamforming matrix is generated at the central processing unit (CPU) based on the global CSI received from all APs. We show that the analog beamformers generated in these two HBF schemes provide approximately the same achievable rates despite the lower complexity of D-HBF and its lack of CSI requirement.} Furthermore, to reduce the power consumption, we propose a novel adaptive radio frequency (RF) chain-activation (ARFA) scheme, which dynamically activates/deactivates RF chains and their connected analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and phase shifters (PSs) at the APs based on the CSI. For the activation of RF chains, low-complexity algorithms are proposed, which can achieve significant improvement in energy efficiency (EE) with only a marginal loss in the total achievable rate.

Powering mobiles using microwave emph{power transfer} (PT) avoids the inconvenience of battery recharging by cables and ensures uninterrupted mobile operation. The integration of PT and emph{information transfer} (IT) allows wireless PT to be realized by building on the existing infrastructure for IT and also leads to compact mobile designs. As a result, emph{simultaneous wireless information and power transfer} (SWIPT) has emerged to be an active research topic that is also the theme of this paper. In this paper, a practical SWIPT system is considered where two multi-antenna stations perform separate PT and IT to a multi-antenna mobile to accommodate their difference in ranges. The mobile dynamically assigns each antenna for either PT or IT. The antenna partitioning results in a tradeoff between the MIMO IT channel capacity and the PT efficiency. The optimal partitioning for maximizing the IT rate under a PT constraint is a NP-hard integer program, and the paper proposes solving it via efficient greedy algorithms with guaranteed performance. To this end, the antenna-partitioning problem is proved to be one that optimizes a sub-modular function over a matroid constraint. This structure allows the application of two well-known greedy algorithms that yield solutions no smaller than the optimal one scaled by factors $(1-1/e)$ and 1/2, respectively.
