Low-temperature heat capacities (Cp) of nanostructured rock salt (rs-ZnO) and wurtzite (w-ZnO) polymorphs of zinc oxide were measured in the 2-315 K temperature range. No significant influence of nanostructuring on Cp of w-ZnO has been observed. The measured Cp of rock salt ZnO is lower than that of wurtzite ZnO below 100 K and is higher above this temperature. Using available thermodynamic data, we established that the equilibrium pressure between nanocrystalline w-ZnO and rs-ZnO is close to 4.6 GPa at 300 K (half as much as the onset pressure of direct phase transformation) and slightly changes with temperature up to 1000 K.

Very recently Leitner et al. [Thermochimica Acta 572 (2013) 1-5] have tried to extract the thermodynamic data of rock-salt ZnO from ab initio and experimental data available in the literature. In this Comment we show that neglecting (i) the strongly pronounced kinetic features of the pressure-induced phase transition in ZnO at room temperature and (ii) results of calorimetric measurements available in the literature [Russ. Chem. Bull. 59 (2010) 325-328] makes the proposed set of thermodynamic functions completely incorrect.
The structure-property relation of nanostructured Al-doped ZnO thin films has been investigated in detail through a systematic variation of structure and morphology, with particular emphasis on how they affect optical and electrical properties. A variety of structures, ranging from compact polycristalline films to mesoporous, hierarchically organized cluster assemblies, are grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition at room temperature at different oxygen pressures. We investigate the dependence of functional properties on structure and morphology and show how the correlation between electrical and optical properties can be studied to evaluate energy gap, conduction band effective mass and transport mechanisms. Understanding these properties opens the way for specific applications in photovoltaic devices, where optimized combinations of conductivity, transparency and light scattering are required.
In this paper, the reported experimental data in [Sci. Rep., 2012, 2, 533] related to electrical transport properties in bulk ZnO, ZnMgO/ZnO, and ZnMgO/ZnO/ZnMgO single and double heterostructures were analyzed quantitatively and the most important scattering parameters for controlling electron concentration and electron mobility were obtained. Treatment of intrinsic mechanisms included polar-optical phonon scattering, piezoelectric scattering and acoustic deformation potential scattering. For extrinsic mechanisms, ionized impurity, dislocation scattering, and strain-induced fields were included. For bulk ZnO, the reported experimental data were corrected for removing the effects of a degenerate layer at the ZnO/sapphire interface via a two layer Hall effect model. Also, donor density, acceptor density and donor activation energy were determined via the charge balance equation. This sample exhibited hopping conduction below 50K and dislocation scattering closely controlled electron mobility closely. The obtained results indicated that the enhancement of electron mobility in double sample, compared with the single one, can be attributed to the reduction of dislocation density, two dimensional impurity density in the potential well due to background impurities, and/or interface charge and strain-induced fields, which can be related to better electron confinement in the channel and enhancement in the sheet carrier concentration of 2DEG in this sample.

GaN and ZnO microcavities have been grown on patterned silicon substrate. Thanks to a common platform these microcavities share similar photonic properties with large quality factors and low photonic disorder which gives the possibility to determine the optimal spot diameter and to realize a complete comparative phase diagram study. Both systems have been investigated under the same experimental condition. Experimental results are well reproduced by simulation using Boltzmann equations. Lower polariton lasing threshold has been measured at low temperature in the ZnO microcavity as expected due to a larger Rabi splitting. However the threshold is strongly impacted by LO phonons through phonon-assisted polariton relaxation. We observe and discuss this effect as a function of temperature and detuning. Finally the polariton lasing threshold at room temperature is quite similar in both microcavities. This study highlights polariton relaxation mechanism and their importance for threshold optimization.
We have studied the electronic structure of Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature, by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental and cluster-model calculation results, we find that Fe atoms are predominantly in the Fe$^{3+}$ ionic state with mixture of a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ and that Fe$^{3+}$ ions are dominant in the surface region of the nano-particles. It is shown that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles is primarily originated from the antiferromagnetic coupling between unequal amounts of Fe$^{3+}$ ions occupying two sets of nonequivalent positions in the region of the XMCD probing depth of $sim$ 2-3 nm.
