In this paper, we tackle the problem of online road network extraction from sparse 3D point clouds. Our method is inspired by how an annotator builds a lane graph, by first identifying how many lanes there are and then drawing each one in turn. We develop a hierarchical recurrent network that attends to initial regions of a lane boundary and traces them out completely by outputting a structured polyline. We also propose a novel differentiable loss function that measures the deviation of the edges of the ground truth polylines and their predictions. This is more suitable than distances on vertices, as there exists many ways to draw equivalent polylines. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on a 90 km stretch of highway, and show that we can recover the right topology 92% of the time.

Most work on temporal action detection is formulated as an offline problem, in which the start and end times of actions are determined after the entire video is fully observed. However, important real-time applications including surveillance and driver assistance systems require identifying actions as soon as each video frame arrives, based only on current and historical observations. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, Temporal Recurrent Network (TRN), to model greater temporal context of a video frame by simultaneously performing online action detection and anticipation of the immediate future. At each moment in time, our approach makes use of both accumulated historical evidence and predicted future information to better recognize the action that is currently occurring, and integrates both of these into a unified end-to-end architecture. We evaluate our approach on two popular online action detection datasets, HDD and TVSeries, as well as another widely used dataset, THUMOS14. The results show that TRN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art.

The medical image is characterized by the inter-class indistinction, high variability, and noise, where the recognition of pixels is challenging. Unlike previous self-attention based methods that capture context information from one level, we reformulate the self-attention mechanism from the view of the high-order graph and propose a novel method, namely Hierarchical Attention Network (HANet), to address the problem of medical image segmentation. Concretely, an HA module embedded in the HANet captures context information from neighbors of multiple levels, where these neighbors are extracted from the high-order graph. In the high-order graph, there will be an edge between two nodes only if the correlation between them is high enough, which naturally reduces the noisy attention information caused by the inter-class indistinction. The proposed HA module is robust to the variance of input and can be flexibly inserted into the existing convolution neural networks. We conduct experiments on three medical image segmentation tasks including optic disc/cup segmentation, blood vessel segmentation, and lung segmentation. Extensive results show our method is more effective and robust than the existing state-of-the-art methods.
The main challenge of online multi-object tracking is to reliably associate object trajectories with detections in each video frame based on their tracking history. In this work, we propose the Recurrent Autoregressive Network (RAN), a temporal generative modeling framework to characterize the appearance and motion dynamics of multiple objects over time. The RAN couples an external memory and an internal memory. The external memory explicitly stores previous inputs of each trajectory in a time window, while the internal memory learns to summarize long-term tracking history and associate detections by processing the external memory. We conduct experiments on the MOT 2015 and 2016 datasets to demonstrate the robustness of our tracking method in highly crowded and occluded scenes. Our method achieves top-ranked results on the two benchmarks.

Fashion landmarks are functional key points defined on clothes, such as corners of neckline, hemline, and cuff. They have been recently introduced as an effective visual representation for fashion image understanding. However, detecting fashion landmarks are challenging due to background clutters, human poses, and scales. To remove the above variations, previous works usually assumed bounding boxes of clothes are provided in training and test as additional annotations, which are expensive to obtain and inapplicable in practice. This work addresses unconstrained fashion landmark detection, where clothing bounding boxes are not provided in both training and test. To this end, we present a novel Deep LAndmark Network (DLAN), where bounding boxes and landmarks are jointly estimated and trained iteratively in an end-to-end manner. DLAN contains two dedicated modules, including a Selective Dilated Convolution for handling scale discrepancies, and a Hierarchical Recurrent Spatial Transformer for handling background clutters. To evaluate DLAN, we present a large-scale fashion landmark dataset, namely Unconstrained Landmark Database (ULD), consisting of 30K images. Statistics show that ULD is more challenging than existing datasets in terms of image scales, background clutters, and human poses. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of DLAN over the state-of-the-art methods. DLAN also exhibits excellent generalization across different clothing categories and modalities, making it extremely suitable for real-world fashion analysis.
Depth map records distance between the viewpoint and objects in the scene, which plays a critical role in many real-world applications. However, depth map captured by consumer-grade RGB-D cameras suffers from low spatial resolution. Guided depth map super-resolution (DSR) is a popular approach to address this problem, which attempts to restore a high-resolution (HR) depth map from the input low-resolution (LR) depth and its coupled HR RGB image that serves as the guidance. The most challenging problems for guided DSR are how to correctly select consistent structures and propagate them, and properly handle inconsistent ones. In this paper, we propose a novel attention-based hierarchical multi-modal fusion (AHMF) network for guided DSR. Specifically, to effectively extract and combine relevant information from LR depth and HR guidance, we propose a multi-modal attention based fusion (MMAF) strategy for hierarchical convolutional layers, including a feature enhance block to select valuable features and a feature recalibration block to unify the similarity metrics of modalities with different appearance characteristics. Furthermore, we propose a bi-directional hierarchical feature collaboration (BHFC) module to fully leverage low-level spatial information and high-level structure information among multi-scale features. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of reconstruction accuracy, running speed and memory efficiency.
