The persistent motility of the individual constituents in microbial suspensions represents a prime example of so-called active matter systems. Cells consume energy, exert forces and move, overall releasing the constraints of equilibrium statistical mechanics of passive elements and allowing for complex spatio-temporal patterns to emerge. Moreover, when subject to physico-chemical stimuli their collective behaviour often drives large scale instabilities of hydrodynamic nature, with implications for biomixing in natural environments and incipient industrial applications. In turn, our ability for external control of these driving stimuli could be used to govern the emerging patterns. Light, being easily manipulable and, at the same time, an important stimulus for a wide variety of microorganisms, is particularly well suited to this end. In this paper, we will discuss the current state, developments, and some of the emerging advances in the fundamentals and applications of light-induced bioconvection with a focus on recent experimental realisations and modelling efforts.
Microorganismal motility is often characterised by complex responses to environmental physico-chemical stimuli. Although the biological basis of these responses is often not well understood, their exploitation already promises novel avenues to directly control the motion of living active matter at both the individual and collective level. Here we leverage the phototactic ability of the model microalga {it Chlamydomonas reinhardtii} to precisely control the timing and position of localised cell photo-accumulation, leading to the controlled development of isolated bioconvective plumes. This novel form of photo-bio-convection allows a precise, fast and reconfigurable control of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the instability and the ensuing global recirculation, which can be activated and stopped in real time. A simple continuum model accounts for the phototactic response of the suspension and demonstrates how the spatio-temporal dynamics of the illumination field can be used as a simple external switch to produce efficient bio-mixing.
Near field hydrodynamic interactions are essential to determine many important emergent behaviors observed in active suspensions, but have not been successfully modeled so far. In this work we propose an effective model capable of efficiently capturing the essence of the near field hydrodynamic interactions, validated numerically by a pedagogic model system consisting of an E. coli and a spherical tracer. The proposed model effectively captures all the details of near field hydrodynamics through only a tensorial coefficient of resistance, which is fundamentally different from, and thus cannot be replaced by, an effective interaction of conservative nature. In a critical test case that studies the scattering angle of the bacterium-tracer pair dynamics, calculations based on the proposed model reveals a region in parameter space where the bacterium is trapped by the spherical tracer, a phenomenon that is regularly observed in experiments but cannot be explained by any existing model.
Deformable elastic bodies in viscous and viscoelastic media constitute a large portion of synthetic and biological complex fluids. We present a parallelized 3D-simulation methodology which fully resolves the momentum balance in the solid and fluid domains. An immersed boundary algorithm is exploited known as the immersed finite element method (IFEM) which accurately determines the internal forces in the solid domain. The scheme utilized has the advantages of requiring no costly re-meshing, handling finite Reynolds number, as well as incorporating non-linear viscoelasticity in the fluid domain. Our algorithm is designed for computationally efficient simulation of multi-particle suspensions with mixed structure types. The internal force calculation in the solid domain in the IFEM is coupled with a finite volume based incompressible fluid solver, both of which are massively parallelized for distributed memory architectures. We performed extensive case studies to ensure the fidelity of our algorithm. Namely, a series of single particle simulations for capsules, red blood cells, and elastic solid deformable particles were conducted in viscous and viscoelastic media. All of our results are in excellent quantitative agreement with the corresponding reported data in the literature which are based on different simulation platforms. Furthermore, we assess the accuracy of multi-particle simulation of blood suspensions (red blood cells in plasma) with and without platelets. Finally, we present the results of a novel simulation of multiple solid deformable objects in a viscoelastic medium.
Colloidal shear thickening presents a significant challenge because the macroscopic rheology becomes increasingly controlled by the microscopic details of short ranged particle interactions in the shear thickening regime. Our measurements here of the first normal stress difference over a wide range of particle volume fraction elucidate the relative contributions from hydrodynamic lubrication and frictional contact forces, which have been debated. At moderate volume fractions we find $N_1<0$, consistent with hydrodynamic models, however at higher volume fractions and shear stresses these models break down and we instead observe dilation ($N_1>0$), indicating frictional contact networks. Remarkably, there is no signature of this transition in the viscosity, instead this change in the sign of $N_1$ occurs while the shear thickening remains continuous. These results suggest a scenario where shear thickening is driven primarily by the formation of frictional contacts, with hydrodynamic forces playing a supporting role at lower concentrations. Motivated by this picture, we introduce a simple model which combines these frictional and hydrodynamic contributions and accurately fits the measured viscosity over a wide range of particle volume fraction and shear stress.
Granular fronts are a common yet unexplained phenomenon emerging during the gravity driven free-surface flow of concentrated suspensions. They are usually believed to be the result of fluid convection in combination with particle size segregation. However, suspensions composed of uniformly sized particles also develop a granular front. Within a large rotating drum, a stationary recirculating avalanche is generated. The flowing material is a mixture of a visco-plastic fluid obtained from a kaolin-water dispersion, with spherical ceramic particles denser than the fluid. The goal is to mimic the composition of many common granular-fluid materials, like fresh concrete or debris flow. In these materials, granular and fluid phases have the natural tendency to segregate due to particle settling. However, through the shearing caused by the rotation of the drum, a reorganization of the phases is induced, leading to the formation of a granular front. By tuning the material properties and the drum velocity, it is possible to control this phenomenon. The setting is reproduced in a numerical environment, where the fluid is solved by a Lattice-Boltzmann Method, and the particles are explicitly represented using the Discrete Element Method. The simulations confirm the findings of the experiments, and provide insight into the internal mechanisms. Comparing the time-scale of particle settling with the one of particle recirculation, a non-dimensional number is defined, and is found to be effective in predicting the formation of a granular front.
