We find unusually large cross-polarized (and anti-symmetric) Raman signature of A$_{rm g}$ phonon mode in CrI$_3$, in agreement with experiments. The signal is present only when the following three effects are considered in concert: ferromagnetism on Cr atoms, spin-orbit interaction, and resonant effects. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that the relevant spin-orbit interaction potential originates from iodine atoms, despite magnetism being mostly on chromium atoms. We analyze the Raman signature as a function of magnetic order, the direction of the magnetic moment, energy and polarization of light used for Raman scattering, as well as carrier lifetime. In addition to a strong cross-polarized Raman signal, we also find unusually strong phonon modulated magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) in CrI$_3$.

We study the Raman spectrum of CrI$_3$, a material that exhibits magnetism in a single-layer. We employ first-principles calculations within density functional theory to determine the effects of polarization, strain, and incident angle on the phonon spectra of the 3D bulk and the single-layer 2D structure, for both the high- and low-temperature crystal structures. Our results are in good agreement with existing experimental measurements and serve as a guide for additional investigations to elucidate the physics of this interesting material.
Using density functional theory (DFT) methods, we have calculated X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra in bulk and thin films of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, CrI$_3$, and CrGeTe$_3$. DFT+$U$ methods are employed for better handling of correlation effects of 3$d$ electrons of transition metals. We discuss relations between the density of states, radial matrix elements, and the corresponding spectra. By comparing the calculated spectra with previously measured spectra, we discuss the reliability of DFT+$U$ methods to describe the electronic structures of these materials and determine the corresponding optimal $U$ and $J$ parameters.

The family of atomically thin magnets holds great promise for a number of prospective applications in magneto-optoelectronics, with CrI$_3$ arguably being its most prototypical member. However, the formation of defects in this system remains unexplored to date. Here, we investigate native point defects in monolayer CrI$_3$ by means of first-principles calculations. We consider a large set of intrinsic impurities and address their atomic structure, thermodynamic stability, diffusion and aggregation tendencies as well as local magnetic moments. Under thermodynamic equilibrium, the most stable defects are found to be either Cr or I atomic vacancies along with their complexes, depending on the chemical potential conditions. These defects are predicted to be quite mobile at room temperature and to exhibit a strong tendency to agglomerate. In addition, our calculations indicate that the defect-induced deviation from the nominal stoichiometry largely impacts the local magnetic moments, thereby suggesting a marked interplay between magnetism and disorder in CrI$_3$. Overall, this work portrays a comprehensive picture of intrinsic point defects in monolayer CrI$_3$ from a theoretical perspective.
First-principles calculations, in combination with the four-state energy mapping method, are performed to extract the magnetic interaction parameters of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Such parameters include the symmetric exchange (SE) couplings and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions up to second nearest neighbors, as well as the single ion anisotropy (SIA). All magnetic parameters are obtained not only for the $R3c$ structural ground state, but also for the $R3m$ and $Rbar{3}c$ phases in order to determine the effects of ferroelectricity and antiferrodistortion distortions, respectively, on these magnetic parameters. In particular, two different second-nearest neighbor couplings are identified and their origins are discussed in details. Moreover, Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations using a magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating these first-principles-derived interaction parameters are further performed. They result (i) not only in the accurate prediction of the spin-canted G-type antiferromagnetic structure and of the known magnetic cycloid propagating along a $<$1$bar{1}$0$>$ direction, as well as their unusual characteristics (such as a weak magnetization and spin-density-waves, respectively); (ii) but also in the finding of another cycloidal state of low-energy and that awaits to be experimentally confirmed. Turning on and off the different magnetic interaction parameters in the MC simulations also reveal the precise role of each of them on magnetism.
Cu$_2$ZnSnS$_4$ is an earth-abundant photovoltaic absorber material predicted to provide a sustainable solution for commercial solar applications. One of the main limitations restricting its commercialization is the issue of cation disorder. Raman spectroscopy has been a sought after technique to characterize disorder in CZTS while a clear consensus between theoretical and experimental results is yet to be achieved. In the present study, via the virtual crystal approximation, we take into account the progressive nature of Cu-Zn disorder in CZTS: we obtain the phonon frequencies at zone-center within the density functional perturbation theory formalism, and further compute the Raman spectra for the disordered phases, achieving a consensus between theory and experiment. These calculations confirm the presence of complete disorder in Cu-Zn 2$a$, 2$c$ and 2$d$ Wyckoff sites. They also show that the Raman intensities of two prominent $A$ phonon modes characterized by motion of S atoms, also known to be experimentally significant, play a key role in understanding the nature of disorder in CZTS.
