This work seeks to quantify the benefits of using energy storage toward the reduction of the energy generation cost of a power system. A two-fold optimization framework is provided where the first optimization problem seeks to find the optimal storage schedule that minimizes operational costs. Since the operational cost depends on the storage capacity, a second optimization problem is then formulated with the aim of finding the optimal storage capacity to be deployed. Although, in general, these problems are difficult to solve, we provide a lower bound on the cost savings for a parametrized family of demand profiles. The optimization framework is numerically illustrated using real-world demand data from ISO New England. Numerical results show that energy storage can reduce energy generation costs by at least 2.5 %.

In autonomous microgrids frequency regulation (FR) is a critical issue, especially with a high level of penetration of the photovoltaic (PV) generation. In this study, a novel virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control for PV generation was introduced to provide frequency support without energy storage. PV generation reserve a part of the active power in accordance with the pre-defined power versus voltage curve. Based on the similarities of the synchronous generator power-angle characteristic curve and the PV array characteristic curve, PV voltage Vpv can be analogized to the power angle {delta}. An emulated governor (droop control) and the swing equation control is designed and applied to the DC-DC converter. PV voltage deviation is subsequently generated and the pre-defined power versus voltage curve is modified to provide the primary frequency and inertia support. A simulation model of an autonomous microgrid with PV, storage, and diesel generator was built. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed VSG strategy are examined under different operating conditions.
Energy storage can be used for many applications in the Smart Grid such as energy arbitrage, peak demand shaving, power factor correction, energy backup to name a few, and can play a major role at increasing the capacity of power networks to host renewable energy sources. Often, storage control algorithms will need to be textit{tailored} according to power networks billing structure, reliability restrictions, and other local power networks norms. In this paper we explore residential energy storage applications in Uruguay, one of the global leaders in renewable energies, where new low-voltage consumer contracts were recently introduced. Based on these billing mechanisms, we focus on energy arbitrage and reactive energy compensation with the aim of minimizing the cost of consumption of an end-user. Given that in the new contacts the buying and selling price of electricity are equal and that reactive power compensation is primarily governed by the installed converter, the storage operation is not sensitive to parameter uncertainties and, therefore, no lookahead is required for decision making. A threshold-based textit{hierarchical} controller is proposed which decides on the optimal active energy for arbitrage and uses the remaining converter capacity for reactive power compensation, which is shown to increase end-user profit. Numerical results indicate that storage could be profitable, even considering battery degradation, under some but not all of the studied contracts. For the cases in which it is not, we propose the best-suited contract. Results presented here can be naturally applied whenever the tariff structure satisfies the hypothesis considered in this work.
Thanks to the unique advantages such as long life cycles, high power density, minimal environmental impact, and high power quality such as fast response and voltage stability, the flywheel/kinetic energy storage system (FESS) is gaining attention recently. There is noticeable progress made in FESS, especially in utility, large-scale deployment for the electrical grid, and renewable energy applications. This paper gives a review of the recent developments in FESS technologies. Due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of FESSs, we survey different design approaches, choices of subsystems, and the effects on performance, cost, and applications. This review focuses on the state of the art of FESS technologies, especially for those who have been commissioned or prototyped. We also highlighted the opportunities and potential directions for the future development of FESS technologies.

Large solar power stations usually locate in remote areas and connect to the main grid via a long transmission line. Energy storage unit is deployed locally with the solar plant to smooth its output. Capacities of the grid-connection transmission line and the energy storage unit have a significant impact on the utilization rate of solar energy, as well as the investment cost. This paper characterizes the feasible set of capacity parameters under a given solar spillage rate and a fixed investment budget. A linear programming based projection algorithm is proposed to obtain such a feasible set, offering valuable references for system planning and policy making.
Incorporating predictions of external inputs, which can otherwise be treated as disturbances, has been widely studied in control and computer science communities. These predictions are commonly referred to as preview in optimal control and lookahead in temporal logic synthesis. However, little work has been done for analyzing the value of preview information for safety control for systems with continuous state spaces. In this work, we start from showing general properties for discrete-time nonlinear systems with preview and strategies on how to determine a good preview time, and then we study a special class of linear systems, called systems in Brunovsky canonical form, and show special properties for this class of systems. In the end, we provide two numerical examples to further illustrate the value of preview in safety control.
