We demonstrate that baryonification algorithms, which displace particles in gravity-only simulations according to physically-motivated prescriptions, can simultaneously capture the impact of baryonic physics on the 2 and 3-point statistics of matter. Specifically, we show that our implementation of a baryonification algorithm jointly fits the changes induced by baryons on the power spectrum and equilateral bispectrum on scales up to k < 5 h/Mpc and redshifts z<2, as measured in six different cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The accuracy of our fits are typically 1% for the power spectrum, and for the equilateral and squeezed bispectra, which somewhat degrades to 3% for simulations with extreme feedback prescriptions. Our results support the physical assumptions underlying baryonification approaches, and encourage their use in interpreting weak gravitational lensing and other cosmological observables.

We perform a joint analysis of the power spectrum and the bispectrum of the CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies to improve the constraints on isocurvature modes. We construct joint likelihoods, both for the existing Planck data, and to make forecasts for the future LiteBIRD and CMB-S4 experiments. We assume a general two-field inflation model with five free parameters, leading to one isocurvature mode (which can be CDM density, neutrino density or neutrino velocity) arbitrarily correlated with the adiabatic mode. We theoretically assess in which cases (of detecting and/or fixing parameters) improvements can be expected, to guide our subsequent numerical analyses. We find that for Planck, which detected neither isocurvature modes nor primordial non-Gaussianity, the joint analysis does not improve the constraints in the general case. However, if we fix additional parameters in the model, the improvements can be highly significant depending on the chosen parameter values. For LiteBIRD+CMB-S4 we study in which regions of parameter space compatible with the Planck results the joint analysis will improve the constraints or the significance of a detection. We find that, while for CDM isocurvature this region is very small, for the neutrino isocurvature modes it is much larger. In particular for neutrino velocity it can be about half of the Planck-allowed region, where the joint analysis reduces the isocurvature error bars by up to 70%. In addition the joint analysis can also improve the error bars of some of the standard cosmological parameters, by up to 30% for $theta_{MC}$ for example, by breaking the degeneracies with the correlation parameter between adiabatic and isocurvature modes.
We construct foreground simulations comprising spatially correlated extragalactic and diffuse Galactic emission components and calculate the `intrinsic (instrument-free) two-dimensional spatial power spectrum and the cylindrically and spherically averaged three-dimensional k-space power spectra of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) and our foreground simulations using a Bayesian power spectral estimation framework. This leads us to identify a model dependent region of optimal signal estimation for our foreground and EoR models, within which the spatial power in the EoR signal relative to foregrounds is maximised. We identify a target field dependent region, in k-space, of intrinsic foreground power spectral contamination at low k_perp and k_parallel and a transition to a relatively foreground-free intrinsic EoR window in the complement to this region. The contaminated region of k-space demonstrates that simultaneous estimation of the EoR and foregrounds is important for obtaining statistically robust estimates of the EoR power spectrum; biased results will be obtained from methodologies that ignore their covariance. Using simulated observations with frequency dependent uv-coverage and primary beam, with the former derived for HERA in 37-antenna and 331-antenna configuration, we recover instrumental power spectra consistent with their intrinsic counterparts. We discuss the implications of these results for optimal strategies for unbiased estimation of the EoR power spectrum.
The large-scale clustering of matter is impacted by baryonic physics, particularly AGN feedback. Modelling or mitigating this impact will be essential for making full use of upcoming measurements of cosmic shear and other large-scale structure probes. We study baryonic effects on the matter bispectrum, using measurements from a selection of state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations: IllustrisTNG, Illustris, EAGLE, and BAHAMAS. We identify a low-redshift enhancement of the bispectrum, peaking at $ksim 3h,{rm Mpc}^{-1}$, that is present in several simulations, and discuss how it can be associated to the evolving nature of AGN feedback at late times. This enhancement does not appear in the matter power spectrum, and therefore represents a new source of degeneracy breaking between two- and three-point statistics. In addition, we provide physical interpretations for other aspects of these measurements, and make initial comparisons to predictions from perturbation theory, empirical fitting formulas, and the response function formalism. We publicly release our measurements (including estimates of their uncertainty due to sample variance) and bispectrum measurement code as resources for the community.
A large body of work based on collisionless cosmological N-body simulations going back over two decades has advanced the idea that collapsed dark matter haloes have simple and approximately universal forms for their mass density and pseudo-phase space density (PPSD) distributions. However, a general consensus on the physical origin of these results has not yet been reached. In the present study, we explore to what extent the apparent universality of these forms holds when we vary the initial conditions (i.e., the primordial power spectrum of density fluctuations) away from the standard CMB-normalised case, but still within the context of LCDM with a fixed expansion history. Using simulations that vary the initial amplitude and shape, we show that the structure of dark matter haloes retains a clear memory of the initial conditions. Specifically, increasing (lowering) the amplitude of fluctuations increases (decreases) the concentration of haloes and, if pushed far enough, the density profiles deviate strongly from the NFW form that is a good approximation for the CMB-normalised case. Although, an Einasto form works well. Rather than being universal, the slope of the PPSD (or pseudo-entropy) profile steepens (flattens) with increasing (decreasing) power spectrum amplitude and can exhibit a strong halo mass dependence. Our results therefore indicate that the previously identified universality of the structure of dark matter haloes is mostly a consequence of adopting a narrow range of (CMB-normalised) initial conditions for the simulations. Our new suite provides a useful test-bench against which physical models for the origin of halo structure can be validated.
Numerical simulations of massive neutrino cosmologies consistently find a spoon-like feature in the non-linear matter power spectrum ratios of cosmological models that differ only in the neutrino mass fraction f_N. Typically, the ratio approaches unity at low wave numbers k, decreases by ~ 10 f_N at k ~ 1 h/Mpc, and turns up again at large k. Using the halo model of large-scale structure, we show that this spoon feature originates in the transition from the two-halo power spectrum to the one-halo power spectrum. The formers sensitivity to f_N rises with k, while that of the latter decreases with k. The presence of this spoon feature is robust with respect to different choices of the halo mass function and the halo density profile, and does not require any parameter tuning within the halo model. We demonstrate that a standard halo model calculation is already able to predict the depth, width, and position of this spoon as well as its evolution with redshift z with remarkable accuracy. Predictions at z >= 1 can be further improved using non-linear perturbative inputs.
