We propose a novel resilient drone service composition framework for delivery in dynamic weather conditions. We use a skyline approach to select an optimal set of candidate drone services at the source node in a skyway network. Drone services are initially composed using a novel constraint-aware deterministic lookahead algorithm using the multi-armed bandit tree exploration. We propose a heuristic-based resilient service composition approach that adapts to runtime changes and periodically updates the composition to meet delivery expectations. Experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Providing coverage for flash crowds is an important application for drone base stations (DBSs). However, any arbitrary crowd is likely to be distributed at a high density. Under the condition for each DBS to serve the same number of ground users, multiple DBSs may be placed at the same horizontal location but different altitudes and will cause severe co-channel interference, to which we refer as the coverage overlapping problem. To solve this problem, we then proposed the data-driven 3D placement (DDP) and the enhanced DDP (eDDP) algorithms. The proposed DDP and eDDP can effectively find the appropriate number, altitude, location, and coverage of DBSs in the serving area in polynomial time to maximize the system sum rate and guarantee the minimum data rate requirement of the user equipment. The simulation results show that, compared with the balanced k-means approach, the proposed eDDP can increase the system sum rate by 200% and reduce the computation time by 50%. In particular, eDDP can effectively reduce the occurrence of the coverage overlapping problem and then outperform DDP by about 100% in terms of system sum rate.
The use of delivery services is an increasing trend worldwide, further enhanced by the COVID pandemic. In this context, drone delivery systems are of great interest as they may allow for faster and cheaper deliveries. This paper presents a navigation system that makes feasible the delivery of parcels with autonomous drones. The system generates a path between a start and a final point and controls the drone to follow this path based on its localization obtained through GPS, 9DoF IMU, and barometer. In the landing phase, information of poses estimated by a marker (ArUco) detection technique using a camera, ultra-wideband (UWB) devices, and the drones software estimation are merged by utilizing an Extended Kalman Filter algorithm to improve the landing precision. A vector field-based method controls the drone to follow the desired path smoothly, reducing vibrations or harsh movements that could harm the transported parcel. Real experiments validate the delivery strategy and allow to evaluate the performance of the adopted techniques. Preliminary results state the viability of our proposal for autonomous drone delivery.
Ubiquitous computing based on small mobile devices using wireless communication links is becoming very attractive. The computational power and storage capacities provided allow the execution of sophisticated applications. Due to the fact that sharing of information is a central problem for distributed applications, the development of self organizing middleware services providing high level interfaces for information managing is essential. ADS is a directory service for mobile ad-hoc networks dealing with local and nearby information as well as providing access to distant information. The approach discussed throughout this paper is based upon the concept of information markets.
Edge computing enables Mobile Autonomous Systems (MASs) to execute continuous streams of heavy-duty mission-critical processing tasks, such as real-time obstacle detection and navigation. However, in practical applications, erratic patterns in channel quality, network load, and edge server load can interrupt the task flow execution, which necessarily leads to severe disruption of the systems key operations. Existing work has mostly tackled the problem with reactive approaches, which cannot guarantee task-level reliability. Conversely, in this paper we focus on learning-based predictive edge computing to achieve self-resilient task offloading. By conducting a preliminary experimental evaluation, we show that there is no dominant feature that can predict the edge-MAS system reliability, which calls for an ensemble and selection of weaker features. To tackle the complexity of the problem, we propose SeReMAS, a data-driven optimization framework. We first mathematically formulate a Redundant Task Offloading Problem (RTOP), where a MAS may connect to multiple edge servers for redundancy, and needs to select which server(s) to transmit its computing tasks in order to maximize the probability of task execution while minimizing channel and edge resource utilization. We then create a predictor based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which produces the optimum task assignment based on application-, network- and telemetry-based features. We prototype SeReMAS on a testbed composed by a drone, mounting a PixHawk flight controller, a Jetson Nano board, and three 802.11n WiFi interfaces. We extensively evaluate SeReMAS by considering an application where one drone offloads high-resolution images for real-time analysis to three edge servers on the ground. Experimental results show that SeReMAS improves task execution probability by $17%$ with respect to existing reactive-based approaches.
This paper considers the problem of service placement and task scheduling on a three-tiered edge-to-cloud platform when user requests must be met by a certain deadline. Time-sensitive applications (e.g., augmented reality, gaming, real-time video analysis) have tight constraints that must be met. With multiple possible computation centers, the where and when of solving these requests becomes paramount when meeting their deadlines. We formulate the problem of meeting users deadlines while minimizing the total cost of the edge-to-cloud service provider as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem. We show the NP-hardness of this problem, and propose two heuristics based on making decisions on a local vs global scale. We vary the number of users, the QoS constraint, and the cost difference between remote cloud and cloudlets(edge clouds), and run multiple Monte-Carlo runs for each case. Our simulation results show that the proposed heuristics are performing close to optimal while reducing the complexity.
