Quantum computation has been growing rapidly in both theory and experiments. In particular, quantum computing devices with a large number of qubits have been developed by IBM, Google, IonQ, and others. The current quantum computing devices are noisy intermediate-scale quantum $($NISQ$)$ devices, and so approaches to validate quantum processing on these quantum devices are needed. One of the most common ways of validation for an n-qubit quantum system is quantum tomography, which tries to reconstruct a quantum systems density matrix by a complete set of observables. However, the inherent noise in the quantum systems and the intrinsic limitations poses a critical challenge to precisely know the actual measurement operators which make quantum tomography impractical in experiments. Here, we propose an alternative approach to quantum tomography, based on the maximal information entropy, that can predict the values of unknown observables based on the available mean measurement data. This can then be used to reconstruct the density matrix with high fidelity even though the results for some observables are missing. Of additional contexts, a practical approach to the inference of the quantum mechanical state using only partial information is also needed.

Quantum state tomography is a key process in most quantum experiments. In this work, we employ quantum machine learning for state tomography. Given an unknown quantum state, it can be learned by maximizing the fidelity between the output of a variational quantum circuit and this state. The number of parameters of the variational quantum circuit grows linearly with the number of qubits and the circuit depth, so that only polynomial measurements are required, even for highly-entangled states. After that, a subsequent classical circuit simulator is used to transform the information of the target quantum state from the variational quantum circuit into a familiar format. We demonstrate our method by performing numerical simulations for the tomography of the ground state of a one-dimensional quantum spin chain, using a variational quantum circuit simulator. Our method is suitable for near-term quantum computing platforms, and could be used for relatively large-scale quantum state tomography for experimentally relevant quantum states.
We develop a practical quantum tomography protocol and implement measurements of pure states of ququarts realized with polarization states of photon pairs (biphotons). The method is based on an optimal choice of the measuring schemes parameters that provides better quality of reconstruction for the fixed set of statistical data. A high accuracy of the state reconstruction (above 0.99) indicates that developed methodology is adequate.
Quantum state tomography is an indispensable but costly part of many quantum experiments. Typically, it requires measurements to be carried in a number of different settings on a fixed experimental setup. The collected data is often informationally overcomplete, with the amount of information redundancy depending on the particular set of measurement settings chosen. This raises a question about how should one optimally take data so that the number of measurement settings necessary can be reduced. Here, we cast this problem in terms of integer programming. For a given experimental setup, standard integer programming algorithms allow us to find the minimum set of readout operations that can realize a target tomographic task. We apply the method to certain basic and practical state tomographic problems in nuclear magnetic resonance experimental systems. The results show that, considerably less readout operations can be found using our technique than it was by using the previous greedy search strategy. Therefore, our method could be helpful for simplifying measurement schemes so as to minimize the experimental effort.

Annealing approach to quantum tomography is theoretically proposed. First, based on the maximum entropy principle, we introduce classical parameters to combine quantum models (or quantum states) given a prior for potentially representing the unknown target state. Then, we formulate the quantum tomography as an optimization problem on the classical parameters, by employing relative entropy of the parametrized state with the target state as the objective function to be minimized. We show that the objective function is physically implementable, in a theoretical sense at least, as an effective Hamiltonian to be induced by physical interactions of the system with environment systems being prepared in the target state. Corollary, applying quantum annealing to the effective Hamiltonian, we can execute quantum tomography by obtaining the ground state that gives the optimal parameters.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a quantum state tomography protocol that generalizes the Wallentowitz-Vogel-Banaszek-Wodkiewicz point-by-point Wigner function reconstruction. The full density operator of an arbitrary quantum state is efficiently reconstructed in the Fock basis, using semidefinite programming, after interference with a small set of calibrated coherent states. This new protocol is resource- and computationally efficient, is robust against noise, does not rely on approximate state displacements, and ensures the physicality of results.
