Imagine a large graph that is being processed by a cluster of computers, e.g., described by the $k$-machine model or the Massively Parallel Computation Model. The graph, however, is not static; instead it is receiving a constant stream of updates. How fast can the cluster process the stream of updates? The fundamental question we want to ask in this paper is whether we can update the graph fast enough to keep up with the stream. We focus specifically on the problem of maintaining a minimum spanning tree (MST), and we give an algorithm for the $k$-machine model that can process $O(k)$ graph updates per $O(1)$ rounds with high probability. (And these results carry over to the Massively Parallel Computation (MPC) model.) We also show a lower bound, i.e., it is impossible to process $k^{1+epsilon}$ updates in $O(1)$ rounds. Thus we provide a nearly tight answer to the question of how fast a cluster can respond to a stream of graph modifications while maintaining an MST.
In this paper we study fractional coloring from the angle of distributed computing. Fractional coloring is the linear relaxation of the classical notion of coloring, and has many applications, in particular in scheduling. It was proved by Hasemann, Hirvonen, Rybicki and Suomela (2016) that for every real $alpha>1$ and integer $Delta$, a fractional coloring of total weight at most $alpha(Delta+1)$ can be obtained deterministically in a single round in graphs of maximum degree $Delta$, in the LOCAL model of computation. However, a major issue of this result is that the output of each vertex has unbounded size. Here we prove that even if we impose the more realistic assumption that the output of each vertex has constant size, we can find fractional colorings of total weight arbitrarily close to known tight bounds for the fractional chromatic number in several cases of interest. More precisely, we show that for any fixed $epsilon > 0$ and $Delta$, a fractional coloring of total weight at most $Delta+epsilon$ can be found in $O(log^*n)$ rounds in graphs of maximum degree $Delta$ with no $K_{Delta+1}$, while finding a fractional coloring of total weight at most $Delta$ in this case requires $Omega(log log n)$ rounds for randomized algorithms and $Omega( log n)$ rounds for deterministic algorithms. We also show how to obtain fractional colorings of total weight at most $2+epsilon$ in grids of any fixed dimension, for any $epsilon>0$, in $O(log^*n)$ rounds. Finally, we prove that in sparse graphs of large girth from any proper minor-closed family we can find a fractional coloring of total weight at most $2+epsilon$, for any $epsilon>0$, in $O(log n)$ rounds.
We show that the $(degree+1)$-list coloring problem can be solved deterministically in $O(D cdot log n cdotlog^2Delta)$ rounds in the CONGEST model, where $D$ is the diameter of the graph, $n$ the number of nodes, and $Delta$ the maximum degree. Using the recent polylogarithmic-time deterministic network decomposition algorithm by Rozhov{n} and Ghaffari [STOC 2020], this implies the first efficient (i.e., $polylog n$-time) deterministic CONGEST algorithm for the $(Delta+1)$-coloring and the $(mathit{degree}+1)$-list coloring problem. Previously the best known algorithm required $2^{O(sqrt{log n})}$ rounds and was not based on network decompositions. Our techniques also lead to deterministic $(mathit{degree}+1)$-list coloring algorithms for the congested clique and the massively parallel computation (MPC) model. For the congested clique, we obtain an algorithm with time complexity $O(logDeltacdotloglogDelta)$, for the MPC model, we obtain algorithms with round complexity $O(log^2Delta)$ for the linear-memory regime and $O(log^2Delta + log n)$ for the sublinear memory regime.
We give efficient randomized and deterministic distributed algorithms for computing a distance-$2$ vertex coloring of a graph $G$ in the CONGEST model. In particular, if $Delta$ is the maximum degree of $G$, we show that there is a randomized CONGEST model algorithm to compute a distance-$2$ coloring of $G$ with $Delta^2+1$ colors in $O(logDeltacdotlog n)$ rounds. Further if the number of colors is slightly increased to $(1+epsilon)Delta^2$ for some $epsilon>1/{rm polylog}(n)$, we show that it is even possible to compute a distance-$2$ coloring deterministically in polylog$(n)$ time in the CONGEST model. Finally, we give a $O(Delta^2 + log^* n)$-round deterministic CONGEST algorithm to compute distance-$2$ coloring with $Delta^2+1$ colors.
We study the problem of randomized information dissemination in networks. We compare the now standard PUSH-PULL protocol, with agent-based alternatives where information is disseminated by a collection of agents performing independent random walks. In the VISIT-EXCHANGE protocol, both nodes and agents store information, and each time an agent visits a node, the two exchange all the information they have. In the MEET-EXCHANGE protocol, only the agents store information, and exchange their information with each agent they meet. We consider the broadcast time of a single piece of information in an $n$-node graph for the above three protocols, assuming a linear number of agents that start from the stationary distribution. We observe that there are graphs on which the agent-based protocols are significantly faster than PUSH-PULL, and graphs where the converse is true. We attribute the good performance of agent-based algorithms to their inherently fair bandwidth utilization, and conclude that, in certain settings, agent-based information dissemination, separately or in combination with PUSH-PULL, can significantly improve the broadcast time. The graphs considered above are highly non-regular. Our main technical result is that on any regular graph of at least logarithmic degree, PUSH-PULL and VISIT-EXCHANGE have the same asymptotic broadcast time. The proof uses a novel coupling argument which relates the random choices of vertices in PUSH-PULL with the random walks in VISIT-EXCHANGE. Further, we show that the broadcast time of MEET-EXCHANGE is asymptotically at least as large as the other twos on all regular graphs, and strictly larger on some regular graphs. As far as we know, this is the first systematic and thorough comparison of the running times of these very natural information dissemination protocols.
