Motivated by the understanding of holography as realized in tensor networks, we develop a bulk procedure that can be interpreted as generating a sequence of coarse-grained holographic states. The coarse-graining procedure involves identifying degrees of freedom entangled at short distances and disentangling them. This is manifested in the bulk by a flow equation that generates a codimension-1 object, which we refer to as the holographic slice. We generalize the earlier classical construction to include bulk quantum corrections, which naturally involves the generalized entropy as a measure of the number of relevant boundary degrees of freedom. The semiclassical coarse-graining results in a flow that approaches quantum extremal surfaces such as entanglement islands that have appeared in discussions of the black hole information paradox. We also discuss the relation of the present picture to the view that the holographic dictionary works as quantum error correction.

A classic theorem in the theory of connections on principal fiber bundles states that the evaluation of all holonomy functions gives enough information to characterize the bundle structure (among those sharing the same structure group and base manifold) and the connection up to a bundle equivalence map. This result and other important properties of holonomy functions has encouraged their use as the primary ingredient for the construction of families of quantum gauge theories. However, in these applications often the set of holonomy functions used is a discrete proper subset of the set of holonomy functions needed for the characterization theorem to hold. We show that the evaluation of a discrete set of holonomy functions does not characterize the bundle and does not constrain the connection modulo gauge appropriately. We exhibit a discrete set of functions of the connection and prove that in the abelian case their evaluation characterizes the bundle structure (up to equivalence), and constrains the connection modulo gauge up to local details ignored when working at a given scale. The main ingredient is the Lie algebra valued curvature function $F_S (A)$ defined below. It covers the holonomy function in the sense that $exp{F_S (A)} = {rm Hol}(l= partial S, A)$.
We construct a generalized Smarr formula which could provide a thermodynamic route to derive the covariant field equation of general theories of gravity in dynamic spacetimes. Combining some thermodynamic variables and a new chemical potential conjugated to the number of degree of freedom on the holographic screen, we find a universal Cardy-Verlinde formula and give its braneworld interpretation. We demonstrate that the associated AdS-Bekenstein bound is tighten than the previous expression for multi-charge black holes in the gauged supergravities. The Cardy-Verlinde formula and the AdS-Bekenstein bound are derived from the thermodynamics of bulk trapping horizons, which strongly suggests the underlying holographic duality between dynamical bulk spacetime and boundary field theory.
In the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, we find some conformal field theory (CFT) states that have no bulk description by the Ba~nados geometry. We elaborate the constraints for a CFT state to be geometric, i.e., having a dual Ba~nados metric, by comparing the order of central charge of the entanglement/Renyi entropy obtained respectively from the holographic method and the replica trick in CFT. We find that the geometric CFT states fulfill Bohrs correspondence principle by reducing the quantum KdV hierarchy to its classical counterpart. We call the CFT states that satisfy the geometric constraints geometric states, and otherwise non-geometric states. We give examples of both the geometric and non-geometric states, with the latter case including the superposition states and descendant states.
We study real-space quantum entanglement included in conformally invariant boundary states in conformal field theories (CFTs). First, we argue that boundary states essentially have no real-space entanglement by computing the entanglement entropy when we bipartite the system into two spatial regions. From the viewpoint of holography, this shows that boundary states are dual to trivial spacetimes of zero spactime volume. Next, we point out that a continuous multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) for any CFTs can be formulated by employing a boundary state as its infrared unentangled state with an appropriate regularization. Exploiting this idea, we propose an approximation scheme of cMERA construction for general CFTs.
We construct a family of solutions of the holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions with the excited states in the AdS soliton background by using both the numerical and analytical methods. The interesting point is that the improved Sturm-Liouville method can not only analytically investigate the properties of the phase transition with the excited states, but also the distributions of the condensed fields in the vicinity of the critical point. We observe that, regardless of the type of the holographic model, the excited state has a higher critical chemical potential than the corresponding ground state, and the difference of the dimensionless critical chemical potential between the consecutive states is around 2.4, which is different from the finding of the metal/superconductor phase transition in the AdS black hole background. Furthermore, near the critical point, we find that the phase transition of the systems is of the second order and a linear relationship exists between the charge density and chemical potential for all the excited states in both s-wave and p-wave insulator/superconductor models.
