Cartograms are map-based data visualizations in which the area of each map region is proportional to an associated numeric data value (e.g., population or gross domestic product). A cartogram is called contiguous if it conforms to this area principle while also keeping neighboring regions connected. Because of their distorted appearance, contiguous cartograms have been criticized as difficult to read. Some authors have suggested that cartograms may be more legible if they are accompanied by interactive features (e.g., animations, linked brushing, or infotips). We conducted an experiment to evaluate this claim. Participants had to perform visual analysis tasks with interactive and noninteractive contiguous cartograms. The task types covered various aspects of cartogram readability, ranging from elementary lookup tasks to synoptic tasks (i.e., tasks in which participants had to summarize high-level differences between two cartograms). Elementary tasks were carried out equally well with and without interactivity. Synoptic tasks, by contrast, were more difficult without interactive features. With access to interactivity, however, most participants answered even synoptic questions correctly. In a subsequent survey, participants rated the interactive features as easy to use and helpful. Our study suggests that interactivity has the potential to make contiguous cartograms accessible even for those readers who are unfamiliar with interactive computer graphics or do not have a prior affinity to working with maps. Among the interactive features, animations had the strongest positive effect, so we recommend them as a minimum of interactivity when contiguous cartograms are displayed on a computer screen.

The detection of traffic anomalies is a critical component of the intelligent city transportation management system. Previous works have proposed a variety of notable insights and taken a step forward in this field, however, dealing with the complex traffic environment remains a challenge. Moreover, the lack of high-quality data and the complexity of the traffic scene, motivate us to study this problem from a hand-crafted perspective. In this paper, we propose a straightforward and efficient framework that includes pre-processing, a dynamic track module, and post-processing. With video stabilization, background modeling, and vehicle detection, the pro-processing phase aims to generate candidate anomalies. The dynamic tracking module seeks and locates the start time of anomalies by utilizing vehicle motion patterns and spatiotemporal status. Finally, we use post-processing to fine-tune the temporal boundary of anomalies. Not surprisingly, our proposed framework was ranked $1^{st}$ in the NVIDIA AI CITY 2021 leaderboard for traffic anomaly detection. Learning behavior mechanism is widely anticipated in managed settings through the formal syllabus. However, heading for learning stimulus whilst daily mobility practices through urban transit is the novel feature in learning sciences. Theory of planned behavior (TPB), technology acceptance model (TAM), and service quality of transit are conceptualized to assess the learning behavioral intention (LBI) of commuters in Greater Kuala Lumpur. An online survey was conducted to understand the LBI of 117 travelers who use the technology to engage in the informal learning process during daily commuting. The results explored that all the model variables i.e., perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, service quality, and subjective norms are significant predictors of LBI. The perceived usefulness of learning during traveling and transit service quality has a vibrant impact on LBI. The research will support the informal learning mechanism from commuters point of view. The study is a novel contribution to transport and learning literature that will open the new prospect of research in urban mobility and its connotation with personal learning and development.
Data is the engine of modern computer vision, which necessitates collecting large-scale datasets. This is expensive, and guaranteeing the quality of the labels is a major challenge. In this paper, we investigate efficient annotation strategies for collecting multi-class classification labels for a large collection of images. While methods that exploit learnt models for labeling exist, a surprisingly prevalent approach is to query humans for a fixed number of labels per datum and aggregate them, which is expensive. Building on prior work on online joint probabilistic modeling of human annotations and machine-generated beliefs, we propose modifications and best practices aimed at minimizing human labeling effort. Specifically, we make use of advances in self-supervised learning, view annotation as a semi-supervised learning problem, identify and mitigate pitfalls and ablate several key design choices to propose effective guidelines for labeling. Our analysis is done in a more realistic simulation that involves querying human labelers, which uncovers issues with evaluation using existing worker simulation methods. Simulated experiments on a 125k image subset of the ImageNet100 show that it can be annotated to 80% top-1 accuracy with 0.35 annotations per image on average, a 2.7x and 6.7x improvement over prior work and manual annotation, respectively. As the use of machine learning (ML) models in product development and data-driven decision-making processes became pervasive in many domains, peoples focus on building a well-performing model has increasingly shifted to understanding how their model works. While scholarly interest in model interpretability has grown rapidly in research communities like HCI, ML, and beyond, little is known about how practitioners perceive and aim to provide interpretability in the context of their existing workflows. This lack of understanding of interpretability as practiced may prevent interpretability research from addressing important needs, or lead to unrealistic solutions. To bridge this gap, we conducted 22 semi-structured interviews with industry practitioners to understand how they conceive of and design for interpretability while they plan, build, and use their models. Based on a qualitative analysis of our results, we differentiate interpretability roles, processes, goals and strategies as they exist within organizations making heavy use of ML models. The characterization of interpretability work that emerges from our analysis suggests that model interpretability frequently involves cooperation and mental model comparison between people in different roles, often aimed at building trust not only between people and models but also between people within the organization. We present implications for design that discuss gaps between the interpretability challenges that practitioners face in their practice and approaches proposed in the literature, highlighting possible research directions that can better address real-world needs.
