We study irreducible ${rm SL}_2$-representations of twist knots. We first determine all non-acyclic ${rm SL}_2(mathbb{C})$-representations, which turn out to lie on a line denoted as $x=y$ in $mathbb{R}^2$. Our main tools are character variety, Reidemeister torsion, and Chebyshev polynomials. We also verify a certain common tangent property, which yields a result on the $L$-functions of universal deformations, that is, the orders of the associated knot modules. Secondly, we prove that a representation is on the line $x=y$ if and only if it factors through the $(-3)$-Dehn surgery, and is non-acyclic if and only if the image of a certain element is of order 3. Finally, we study absolutely irreducible non-acyclic representations $overline{rho}$ over a finite field with characteristic $p>2$ to concretely determine all non-trivial $L$-functions $L_{rho}$ of the universal deformations over a CDVR. We show among other things that $L_{rho}$ $dot{=}$ $k_n(x)^2$ holds for a certain series $k_n(x)$ of polynomials.

Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.
We prove that instanton L-space knots are fibered and strongly quasipositive. Our proof differs conceptually from proofs of the analogous result in Heegaard Floer homology, and includes a new decomposition theorem for cobordism maps in framed instanton Floer homology akin to the $textrm{Spin}^c$ decompositions of cobordism maps in other Floer homology theories. As our main application, we prove (modulo a mild nondegeneracy condition) that for $r$ a positive rational number and $K$ a nontrivial knot in the $3$-sphere, there exists an irreducible homomorphism [pi_1(S^3_r(K)) to SU(2)] unless $r geq 2g(K)-1$ and $K$ is both fibered and strongly quasipositive, broadly generalizing results of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We also answer a question of theirs from 2004, proving that there is always an irreducible homomorphism from the fundamental group of 4-surgery on a nontrivial knot to $SU(2)$. In another application, we show that a slight enhancement of the A-polynomial detects infinitely many torus knots, including the trefoil.

A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of their numerators. This is an analog of Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalens cyclic surgery theorem.
Baker showed that 10 of the 12 classes of Berge knots are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. In this article we enumerate all hyperbolic knots in S^3 obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5 chain link that realize the maximal known distances between slopes corresponding to exceptional (lens, lens), (lens, toroidal), (lens, Seifert fibred spaces) pairs. In light of Bakers work, the classification in this paper conjecturally accounts for most hyperbolic knots in S^3 realizing the maximal distance between these exceptional pairs. All examples obtained in our classification are realized by filling the magic manifold. The classification highlights additional examples not mentioned in Martelli and Petronios survey of the exceptional fillings on the magic manifold. Of particular interest, is an example of a knot with two lens space surgeries that is not obtained by filling the Berge manifold.

We study a theory of finite type invariants for null-homologous knots in rational homology 3-spheres with respect to null Lagrangian-preserving surgeries. It is an analogue in the setting of the rational homology of the Goussarov-Rozansky theory for knots in integral homology 3-spheres. We give a partial combinatorial description of the graded space associated with our theory and determine some cases when this description is complete. For null-homologous knots in rational homology 3-spheres with a trivial Alexander polynomial, we show that the Kricker lift of the Kontsevich integral and the Lescop equivariant invariant built from integrals in configuration spaces are universal finite type invariants for this theory; in particular it implies that they are equivalent for such knots.
