We report results of muon spin relaxation and rotation ($mu$SR) experiments on the spin-liquid candidate~YbMgGaO$_{4}$. No static magnetism $gtrsim 0.003mu_B$ per Yb ion, ordered or disordered, is observed down to 22~mK, a factor of two lower in temperature than previous measurements. Persistent (temperature-independent) spin dynamics are observed up to 0.20~K and at least 1~kOe, thus extending previous zero-field $mu$SR results over a substantial region of the $H$-$T$ phase diagram. Knight shift measurements in a 10-kOe transverse field reveal two lines with nearly equal amplitudes. Inhomogeneous muon depolarization in a longitudinal field, previously characterized by stretched-exponential relaxation due to spatial inhomogeneity, is fit equally well with two exponentials, also of equal amplitudes. We attribute these results to two interstitial muon sites in the unit cell, rather than disorder or other spatial distribution. Further evidence for this attribution is found from agreement between the ratio of the two measured relaxation rates and calculated mean-square local Yb$^{3+}$ dipolar fields at candidate muon sites. Zero-field data can be understood as a combination of two-exponential dynamic relaxation and quasistatic nuclear dipolar fields.
Single-crystal x-ray diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, and muon spin relaxation ($mu$SR) are used to probe pressure evolution of the triangular spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$. The rhombohedral crystal structure is retained up to at least 10 GPa and shows a nearly uniform compression along both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, whereas local distortions caused by the random distribution of Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ remain mostly unchanged. The $mu$SR data confirm persistent spin dynamics up to 2.6 GPa and down to 250 mK with no change in the muon relaxation rate. Longitudinal-field $mu$SR reveals power-law behavior of the spin-spin autocorrelation function, both at ambient pressure and upon compression.
Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ presents a system whose Co$^{2+}$ ions have an effective spin 1/2 and construct a regular triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAFM) with a very large interlayer spacing, ensuring purely two-dimensional character. We exploit this ideal realization to perform a detailed experimental analysis of the $S = 1/2$ TLAFM, which is one of the keystone models in frustrated quantum magnetism. We find strong low-energy spin fluctuations and no magnetic ordering, but a diverging correlation length down to 0.1 K, indicating a Mermin-Wagner trend towards zero-temperature order. Below 0.1 K, however, our low-field measurements show an nexpected magnetically disordered state, which is a candidate quantum spin liquid. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram, mapping in detail the quantum fluctuation corrections to the available theoretical analysis. These include a strong upshift in field of the maximum ordering temperature, qualitative changes to both low- and high-field phase boundaries, and an ordered regime apparently dominated by the collinear up-up-down state. Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ therefore offers fresh input for the development of theoretical approaches to the field-induced quantum phase transitions of the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg TLAFM.
Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Theta$$_w$ $sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($leq$ $|$$Theta$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 %). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.
We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor $J_1 > 0$, the next-nearest-neighobr $J_2 > 0$ Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction $J_{chi}(vec{S}_i times vec{S}_j) cdot vec{S}_k$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing $J_2$ ($J_2/J_1 leq 0.3$) and $J_{chi}$ ($J_{chi}/J_1 leq 1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered $120^{circ}$ phase, stripe phase, and non-coplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $ u = 1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the $J_1 - J_2$ triangular model ($0.08 lesssim J_2/J_1 lesssim 0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small $J_{chi}$. We also compute spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest large gap in the odd topological sector but small or vanishing gap in the even sector. We discuss the implications of our results to the nature of the spin liquid phases.
Muon spin relaxation and rotation ($mu$SR) experiments on single crystals of the structurally perfect triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ indicate the absence of both static long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.048 K in zero field. Below 0.4 K, the $mu^{+}$ spin relaxation rates, which are proportional to the dynamic correlation function of the Yb$^{3+}$ spins, exhibit temperature-independent plateaus. Same behavior is revealed by temperature-independent local susceptibilities extracted from the Knight shifts of the $mu^{+}$ spin rotation frequencies under a transverse field of 20 Oe. All these $mu$SR results unequivocally support the formation of a gapless U(1) quantum spin liquid ground state in the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$.
