We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor $J_1 > 0$, the next-nearest-neighobr $J_2 > 0$ Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction $J_{chi}(vec{S}_i times vec{S}_j) cdot vec{S}_k$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing $J_2$ ($J_2/J_1 leq 0.3$) and $J_{chi}$ ($J_{chi}/J_1 leq 1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered $120^{circ}$ phase, stripe phase, and non-coplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $ u = 1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the $J_1 - J_2$ triangular model ($0.08 lesssim J_2/J_1 lesssim 0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small $J_{chi}$. We also compute spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest large gap in the odd topological sector but small or vanishing gap in the even sector. We discuss the implications of our results to the nature of the spin liquid phases.
Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ presents a system whose Co$^{2+}$ ions have an effective spin 1/2 and construct a regular triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAFM) with a very large interlayer spacing, ensuring purely two-dimensional character. We exploit this ideal realization to perform a detailed experimental analysis of the $S = 1/2$ TLAFM, which is one of the keystone models in frustrated quantum magnetism. We find strong low-energy spin fluctuations and no magnetic ordering, but a diverging correlation length down to 0.1 K, indicating a Mermin-Wagner trend towards zero-temperature order. Below 0.1 K, however, our low-field measurements show an nexpected magnetically disordered state, which is a candidate quantum spin liquid. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram, mapping in detail the quantum fluctuation corrections to the available theoretical analysis. These include a strong upshift in field of the maximum ordering temperature, qualitative changes to both low- and high-field phase boundaries, and an ordered regime apparently dominated by the collinear up-up-down state. Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ therefore offers fresh input for the development of theoretical approaches to the field-induced quantum phase transitions of the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg TLAFM.
The topological quantum spin liquids (SL) and the nature of quantum phase transitions between them have attracted intensive attentions for the past twenty years. The extended kagome spin-1/2 antiferromagnet emerges as the primary candidate for hosting both time reversal symmetry (TRS) preserving and TRS breaking SLs based on density matrix renormalization group simulations. To uncover the nature of the novel quantum phase transition between the SL states, we study a minimum XY model with the nearest neighbor (NN) ($J_{xy}$), the second and third NN couplings ($J_{2xy}=J_{3xy}=J_{xy}$). We identify the TRS broken chiral SL (CSL) with the turn on of a small perturbation $J_{xy}sim 0.06 J_{xy}$, which is fully characterized by the fractionally quantized topological Chern number and the conformal edge spectrum as the $ u=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall state. On the other hand, the NN XY model ($J_{xy}=0$) is shown to be a critical SL state adjacent to the CSL, characterized by the gapless spin singlet excitations and also vanishing small spin triplet excitations. The quantum phase transition from the CSL to the gapless critical SL is driven by the collapsing of the neutral (spin singlet) excitation gap. By following the evolution of entanglement spectrum, we find that the transition takes place through the coupling of the edge states with opposite chiralities, which merge into the bulk and become gapless neutral excitations. The effect of the NN spin-$z$ coupling $J_z$ is also studied, which leads to a quantum phase diagram with an extended regime for the gapless SL.
We study effects of nonmagnetic impurities in a spin-1/2 frustrated triangular antiferromagnet with the aim of understanding the observed broadening of $^{13}$C NMR lines in the organic spin liquid material $kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$. For high temperatures down to $J/3$, we calculate local susceptibility near a nonmagnetic impurity and near a grain boundary for the nearest neighbor Heisenberg model in high temperature series expansion. We find that the local susceptibility decays to the uniform one in few lattice spacings, and for a low density of impurities we would not be able to explain the line broadening present in the experiments already at elevated temperatures. At low temperatures, we assume a gapless spin liquid with a Fermi surface of spinons. We calculate the local susceptibility in the mean field and also go beyond the mean field by Gutzwiller projection. The zero temperature local susceptibility decays as a power law and oscillates at $2 k_F$. As in the high temperature analysis we find that a low density of impurities is not able to explain the observed broadening of the lines. We are thus led to conclude that there is more disorder in the system. We find that a large density of point-like disorder gives broadening that is consistent with the experiment down to about 5K, but that below this temperature additional mechanism is likely needed.
We study the spin liquid candidate of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By applying an external Aharonov-Bohm flux insertion in an infinitely long cylinder, we find unambiguous evidence for gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid behavior. The flux insertion overcomes the finite size restriction for energy gaps and clearly shows gapless behavior at the expected wave-vectors. Using the DMRG transfer matrix, the low-lying excitation spectrum can be extracted, which shows characteristic Dirac cone structures of both spinon-bilinear and monopole excitations. Finally, we confirm that the entanglement entropy follows the predicted universal response under the flux insertion.
We use the state-of-the-art tensor network state method, specifically, the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) algorithm, to simulate the global phase diagram of spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices up to $24times 24$. We provide very solid evidences to show that the nature of the intermediate nonmagnetic phase is a gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL), whose spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations both decay with a power law behavior. There also exists a valence-bond solid (VBS) phase in a very narrow region $0.56lesssim J_2/J_1leq0.61$ before the system enters the well known collinear antiferromagnetic phase. We stress that our work gives rise to the first solid PEPS results beyond the well established density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) through one-to-one direct benchmark for small system sizes. Thus our numerical evidences explicitly demonstrate the huge power of PEPS for solving long-standing 2D quantum many-body problems. The physical nature of the discovered gapless QSL and potential experimental implications are also addressed.
