In this paper, we propose adaptive channel-matched detection (ACMD) for C-band 64-Gbit/s intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) optical on-off keying (OOK) system over a 100-km dispersion-uncompensated link. The proposed ACMD can adaptively compensate most of the link distortions based on channel and noise characteristics, which includes a polynomial nonlinear equalizer (PNLE), a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE). Based on the channel characteristics, PNLE eliminates the linear and nonlinear distortions, while the followed DFE compensates the spectral nulls caused by chromatic dispersion. Finally, based on the noise characteristics, a post filter can whiten the noise for implementing optimal signal detection using MLSE. To the best of our knowledge, we present a record C-band 64-Gbit/s IM/DD optical OOK system over a 100 km dispersion-uncompensated link achieving 7% hard-decision forward error correction limit using only the proposed ACMD at the receiver side. In conclusion, ACMD-based C-band 64-Gbit/s optical OOK system shows great potential for future optical interconnects.

In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we propose the first multi-rate Nyquist-subcarriers modulation (SCM) for C-band 100Gbit/s signal transmission over 50km dispersion-uncompensated link. Chromatic dispersion (CD) introduces severe spectral nulls on optical double-sideband signal, which greatly degrades the performance of intensity-modulation and direct-detection systems. In the previous works, high-complexity digital signal processing (DSP) is required to resist the CD-caused spectral nulls. Based on the characteristics of dispersive channel, Nyquist-SCM with multi-rate subcarriers is proposed to keep away from the CD-caused spectral nulls flexibly. Signal on each subcarrier can be individually recovered by a DSP with an acceptable complexity, including the feed-forward equalizer with no more than 31 taps, a two-tap post filter, and maximum likelihood sequence estimation with one memory length. Combining with entropy loading based on probabilistic constellation shaping to maximize the capacity-reach, the C-band 100Gbit/s multi-rate Nyquist-SCM signal over 50km dispersion-uncompensated link can achieve 7% hard-decision forward error correction limit and average normalized generalized mutual information of 0.967. In conclusion, the multi-rate Nyquist-SCM shows great potentials in solving the CD-caused spectral distortions.

In this study, we propose an approach to constructing on-off keying (OOK) symbols for wake-up radios (WURs) by using sequences in the frequency domain. The proposed method enables orthogonal multiplexing of wake-up signals (WUSs) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms. We optimize the sequences with a tractable algorithm by considering the reliability of WUSs in fading channels. The proposed algorithm relies on an alternating minimization technique, i.e. cyclic algorithm-new (CAN), which was originally proposed for obtaining a unimodular sequence with good aperiodic correlation properties. In this study, we extend CAN to generate OOK waveforms with Manchester coding. We demonstrate the performance of four optimized sequences and compare with state-of-the-art approaches. We show that the proposed scheme improves the wake-up radio receiver (WURx) performance by controlling the energy distribution in frequency domain while removing the interference-floor at the OFDM receiver.
In this paper, we propose the joint interference cancellation, fast fading channel estimation, and data symbol detection for a general interference setting where the interfering source and the interfered receiver are unsynchronized and occupy overlapping channels of different bandwidths. The interference must be canceled before the channel estimation and data symbol detection of the desired communication are performed. To this end, we have to estimate the Effective Interference Coefficients (EICs) and then the desired fast fading channel coefficients. We construct a two-phase framework where the EICs and desired channel coefficients are estimated using the joint maximum likelihood-maximum a posteriori probability (JML-MAP) criteria in the first phase; and the MAP based data symbol detection is performed in the second phase. Based on this two-phase framework, we also propose an iterative algorithm for interference cancellation, channel estimation and data detection. We analyze the channel estimation error, residual interference, symbol error rate (SER) achieved by the proposed framework. We then discuss how to optimize the pilot density to achieve the maximum throughput. Via numerical studies, we show that our design can effectively mitigate the interference for a wide range of SNR values, our proposed channel estimation and symbol detection design can achieve better performances compared to the existing method. Moreover, we demonstrate the improved performance of the iterative algorithm with respect to the non-iterative counterpart.

The knowledge of channel covariance matrices is of paramount importance to the estimation of instantaneous channels and the design of beamforming vectors in multi-antenna systems. In practice, an abrupt change in channel covariance matrices may occur due to the change in the environment and the user location. Although several works have proposed efficient algorithms to estimate the channel covariance matrices after any change occurs, how to detect such a change accurately and quickly is still an open problem in the literature. In this paper, we focus on channel covariance change detection between a multi-antenna base station (BS) and a single-antenna user equipment (UE). To provide theoretical performance limit, we first propose a genie-aided change detector based on the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) test assuming the channel covariance matrix after change is known, and characterize the corresponding missed detection and false alarm probabilities. Then, this paper considers the practical case where the channel covariance matrix after change is unknown. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimation technique is used to predict the covariance matrix based on the received pilot signals over a certain number of coherence blocks, building upon which the LLR-based change detector is employed. Numerical results show that our proposed scheme can detect the change with low error probability even when the number of channel samples is small such that the estimation of the covariance matrix is not that accurate. This result verifies the possibility to detect the channel covariance change both accurately and quickly in practice.

In the massive machine-type communication (mMTC) scenario, a large number of devices with sporadic traffic need to access the network on limited radio resources. While grant-free random access has emerged as a promising mechanism for massive access, its potential has not been fully unleashed. In particular, the common sparsity pattern in the received pilot and data signal has been ignored in most existing studies, and auxiliary information of channel decoding has not been utilized for user activity detection. This paper endeavors to develop advanced receivers in a holistic manner for joint activity detection, channel estimation, and data decoding. In particular, a turbo receiver based on the bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiG-AMP) algorithm is developed. In this receiver, all the received symbols will be utilized to jointly estimate the channel state, user activity, and soft data symbols, which effectively exploits the common sparsity pattern. Meanwhile, the extrinsic information from the channel decoder will assist the joint channel estimation and data detection. To reduce the complexity, a low-cost side information-aided receiver is also proposed, where the channel decoder provides side information to update the estimates on whether a user is active or not. Simulation results show that the turbo receiver is able to reduce the activity detection, channel estimation, and data decoding errors effectively, while the side information-aided receiver notably outperforms the conventional method with a relatively low complexity.
