We experimentally investigate the effects of the linear photon momentum on the momentum distributions of photoions and photoelectrons generated in one-photon ionization in an energy range of 300 eV $leq~E_gamma~leq$ 40 keV. Our results show that for each ionization event the photon momentum is imparted onto the photoion, which is essentially the systems center of mass. Nevertheless, the mean value of the ion momentum distribution along the light propagation direction is backward-directed by $-3/5$ times the photon momentum. These results experimentally confirm a 90 year old prediction.

In this work, we apply the Monte Carlo wave packet method to study the ultrafast nuclear dynamics following inner-shell photoionization of N2 exposed to an ultrashort intense X-ray pulse. The photon energy of the X-ray pulse is large enough to remove a 1s electron from the N atom in N2. The intermediate state in N+2 is highly excited so that autoionization takes place from this state to the dissociative or non-dissociative electronic states of ungerade and gerade symmetries in N++2. The possible vibrational resonances allowed by the non-dissociative states prevents a direct extraction of the nuclear kinetic release (KER) spectrum from the nuclear wave packets in N++2. Therefore, we propose a hybrid technique by combining the advantages of two energy analysis strategies to obtain the final nuclear KER spectrum of the process. A femtosecond IR probe pulse, which couples the electronic states in N++2 together, is applied to achieve a time-resolved imaging and controlling of the ultrafast dynamics that takes place during double ionization of N2. The influence of the laser parameters including the peak intensity, pulse duration and pump-probe delay, on the nuclear dynamics is also investigated.
We report on kinematically complete measurements and ab initio non-perturbative calculations of double ionization of He and H2 by a single 800 eV circularly polarized photon. We confirm the quasifree mechanism of photoionization for H2 and show how it originates from the two-electron cusp in the ground state of a two-electron target. Our approach establishes a new method for mapping electrons relative to each other and provides valuable insight into photoionization beyond the electric-dipole approximation.

We investigate the differential ionization probability of chiral molecules in the strong field regime as a function of the helicity of the incident light. To this end, we analyze the fourfold ionization of bromochlorofluoromethane (CHBrClF) with subsequent fragmentation into four charged fragments and different dissociation channels of the singly ionized methyloxirane. We observe a variation of the differential ionization probability in a range of several percent. Accordingly, we conclude that the helicity of light is a quantity that should be considered for the theoretical description of the strong field ionization rate of chiral molecules.
We present the first observation of the 1s2p 3P2 ? 1s2s 3S1 transition in He-like uranium. The experiment was performed at the internal gas-jet target of the ESR storage ring at GSI exploiting a Bragg crystal spectrometer and a germanium solid state detector. Using the 1s2 2p 2P3/2 ? 1s2 2s 2S1/2 transition in Li-like uranium as reference and the deceleration capabilities of the ESR storage rings, we obtained the first evaluation of the He-like heavy ion intra-shell transition energy.
We develop a formalism for photoionization (PI) and potential energy curves (PECs) of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical lattices and apply it to examples covering several regimes of the optical-lattice depth. The effect of lattice-induced PI on Rydberg-atom lifetime ranges from noticeable to highly dominant when compared with natural decay. The PI behavior is governed by the generally rapid decrease of the PI cross sections as a function of angular-momentum ($ell$), and by lattice-induced $ell$-mixing across the optical-lattice PECs. In GHz-deep lattices, $ell$-mixing leads to a rich PEC structure, and the significant low-$ell$ PI cross sections are distributed over many lattice-mixed Rydberg states. In lattices less than several tens-of-MHz deep, atoms on low-$ell$ PECs are essentially $ell$-mixing-free and maintain large PI cross sections, while atoms on high-$ell$ PECs trend towards being PI-free. Characterization of PI in GHz-deep Rydberg-atom lattices may be beneficial for optical control and quantum-state manipulation of Rydberg atoms, while data on PI in shallower lattices are potentially useful in high-precision spectroscopy and quantum-computing applications of lattice-confined Rydberg atoms.
