A phenomenological study of the isolated photon production in high energy $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is performed. Using the color dipole approach we investigate the production cross section differential in the transverse momentum of the photon considering three different phenomenological models for the universal dipole cross section. We also present the predictions for the rapidity dependence of the ratio of $pA$ to $pp$ cross sections. As a further test of the formalism, for different energies and photon rapidites we analyse the correlation function in azimuthal angle $Deltaphi$ between the photon and a forward pion. The characteristic double-peak structure of the correlation function around $Delta phisimeq pi$ observed previously for Drell-Yan pair production is found for isolated photon emitted into the forward rapidity region which can be tested by future experiments.
The high-energy behaviour of the total cross section for highly virtual photons, as predicted by the BFKL equation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD, is presented. The NLO BFKL predictions, improved by the BLM optimal scale setting, are in excellent agreement with recent OPAL and L3 data at CERN LEP2.
We derive expressions for the cross section of the multiparton interactions based on the analysis of the relevant Feynman diagrams. We express the cross sections through the double (triple, ...) generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In the mean field approximation for the double GPDs the answer is expressed through the integral over two gluon form factor which was measured in the exclusive DIS vector meson production. We explain under what conditions the derived expressions correspond to an intuitive picture of hard interactions in the impact parameter representation. The mean field approximation in which correlations of the partons are neglected fail to explain the data, while pQCD induced correlation enhance large $p_perp$ and $ 0.001 < x < 0.1$ typically enhance the cross section by a factor of 1.5 -- 2 explaining the current data. We argue that in the small x kinematics ($10^{-4} le x le 10^{-3}$) where effects of perturbative correlations diminish, the nonperturbative mechanism kicks in and generates positive correlations comparable in magnitude with the perturbative ones. We explain how our technique can be used for calculations of MPI in the proton - nucleus scattering. The interplay of hard interactions and underlying event is discussed, as well as different geometric pictures for each of MPI mechanisms-pQCD, nonperturbative correlations and mean field. Predictions for value of effs for various processes and a wide range of kinematics are given. We show that together different MPI mechanisms give good description of experimental data, both at Tvatron, and LHC, including the central kinematics studied by ATLAS and CMS detectors, and forward (heavy flavors) kinematics studied by LHCb.
Next-to-leading order predictions matched to parton showers are compared with recent ATLAS data on inclusive photon production and CMS data on associated photon and jet production in pp and pPb collisions at different centre-of-mass energies of the LHC. We find good agreement and, as expected, considerably reduced scale uncertainties compared to previous theoretical calculations. Predictions are made for the ratio of inclusive photons over decay photons $R_gamma$, an important quantity to evaluate the significance of additional photon sources, e.g. thermal radiation from a Quark-Gluon-Plasma, and for distributions in the parton momentum fraction in lead ions $x_{rm Pb}^{rm obs}$, that could be determined by ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb in ongoing analyses of photon+jet production in pPb collisions at $sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. These data should have an important impact on the determination of nuclear effects such as shadowing at low $x$.
We present a calculation of direct photon production at next-to-leading order of QCD and a matching of this calculation with parton showers using POWHEG BOX. Based on simulations with POWHEG+PYTHIA, we perform a detailed phenomenological analysis of PHENIX data on prompt photon production and photon-hadron jet correlations in pp collisions at RHIC, considerably improving the description of these data with respect to previous calculations, and we suggest additional interesting analyses.
We review the charged particle and photon multiplicity, and transverse energy production in heavy-ion collisions starting from few GeV to TeV energies. The experimental results of pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles and photons at different collision energies and centralities are discussed. We also discuss the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation and expansion dynamics using the Landau hydrodynamics and the underlying physics. Meanwhile, we present the estimation of initial energy density multiplied with formation time as a function of different collision energies and centralities. In the end, the transverse energy per charged particle in connection with the chemical freeze-out criteria is discussed. We invoke various models and phenomenological arguments to interpret and characterize the fireball created in heavy-ion collisions. This review overall provides a scope to understand the heavy-ion collision data and a possible formation of a deconfined phase of partons via the global observables like charged particles, photons and the transverse energy measurement.
