This paper is a brief introduction to our submission to the seven basic expression classification track of Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild Competition held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition (FG) 2020. The study of affective computing in the wild setting is underpinned by databases. Existing multimodal emotion databases in the real-world conditions are few and small, with a limited number of subjects and expressed in a single language. To meet this requirement, we collected, annotated, and prepared to release a new natural state video database (called HEU Emotion). HEU Emotion contains a total of 19,004 video clips, which is divided into two parts according to the data source. The first part contains videos downloaded from Tumblr, Google, and Giphy, including 10 emotions and two modalities (facial expression and body posture). The second part includes corpus taken manually from movies, TV series, and variety shows, consisting of 10 emotions and three modalities (facial expression, body posture, and emotional speech). HEU Emotion is by far the most extensive multi-modal emotional database with 9,951 subjects. In order to provide a benchmark for emotion recognition, we used many conventional machine learning and deep learning methods to evaluate HEU Emotion. We proposed a Multi-modal Attention module to fuse multi-modal features adaptively. After multi-modal fusion, the recognition accuracies for the two parts increased by 2.19% and 4.01% respectively over those of single-modal facial expression recognition.
Emotion recognition in user-generated videos plays an important role in human-centered computing. Existing methods mainly employ traditional two-stage shallow pipeline, i.e. extracting visual and/or audio features and training classifiers. In this paper, we propose to recognize video emotions in an end-to-end manner based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Specifically, we develop a deep Visual-Audio Attention Network (VAANet), a novel architecture that integrates spatial, channel-wise, and temporal attentions into a visual 3D CNN and temporal attentions into an audio 2D CNN. Further, we design a special classification loss, i.e. polarity-consistent cross-entropy loss, based on the polarity-emotion hierarchy constraint to guide the attention generation. Extensive experiments conducted on the challenging VideoEmotion-8 and Ekman-6 datasets demonstrate that the proposed VAANet outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches for video emotion recognition. Since the renaissance of deep learning (DL), facial expression recognition (FER) has received a lot of interest, with continual improvement in the performance. Hand-in-hand with performance, new challenges have come up. Modern FER systems deal with face images captured under uncontrolled conditions (also called in-the-wild scenario) including occlusions and pose variations. They successfully handle such conditions using deep networks that come with various components like transfer learning, attention mechanism and local-global context extractor. However, these deep networks are highly complex with large number of parameters, making them unfit to be deployed in real scenarios. Is it possible to build a light-weight network that can still show significantly good performance on FER under in-the-wild scenario? In this work, we methodically build such a network and call it as Imponderous Net. We leverage on the aforementioned components of deep networks for FER, and analyse, carefully choose and fit them to arrive at Imponderous Net. Our Imponderous Net is a low calorie net with only 1.45M parameters, which is almost 50x less than that of a state-of-the-art (SOTA) architecture. Further, during inference, it can process at the real time rate of 40 frames per second (fps) in an intel-i7 cpu. Though it is low calorie, it is still power packed in its performance, overpowering other light-weight architectures and even few high capacity architectures. Specifically, Imponderous Net reports 87.09%, 88.17% and 62.06% accuracies on in-the-wild datasets RAFDB, FERPlus and AffectNet respectively. It also exhibits superior robustness under occlusions and pose variations in comparison to other light-weight architectures from the literature.

Digital images nowadays have various styles of appearance, in the aspects of color tones, contrast, vignetting, and etc. These picture styles are directly related to the scene radiance, image pipeline of the camera, and post processing functions. Due to the complexity and nonlinearity of these causes, popular gradient-based image descriptors wont be invariant to different picture styles, which will decline the performance of object recognition. Given that images shared online or created by individual users are taken with a wide range of devices and may be processed by various post processing functions, to find a robust object recognition system is useful and challenging. In this paper, we present the first study on the influence of picture styles for object recognition, and propose an adaptive approach based on the kernel view of gradient descriptors and multiple kernel learning, without estimating or specifying the styles of images used in training and testing. We conduct experiments on Domain Adaptation data set and Oxford Flower data set. The experiments also include several variants of the flower data set by processing the images with popular photo effects. The results demonstrate that our proposed method improve from standard descriptors in all cases.
Emotion recognition as a key component of high-stake downstream applications has been shown to be effective, such as classroom engagement or mental health assessments. These systems are generally trained on small datasets collected in single laboratory environments, and hence falter when tested on data that has different noise characteristics. Multiple noise-based data augmentation approaches have been proposed to counteract this challenge in other speech domains. But, unlike speech recognition and speaker verification, in emotion recognition, noise-based data augmentation may change the underlying label of the original emotional sample. In this work, we generate realistic noisy samples of a well known emotion dataset (IEMOCAP) using multiple categories of environmental and synthetic noise. We evaluate how both human and machine emotion perception changes when noise is introduced. We find that some commonly used augmentation techniques for emotion recognition significantly change human perception, which may lead to unreliable evaluation metrics such as evaluating efficiency of adversarial attack. We also find that the trained state-of-the-art emotion recognition models fail to classify unseen noise-augmented samples, even when trained on noise augmented datasets. This finding demonstrates the brittleness of these systems in real-world conditions. We propose a set of recommendations for noise-based augmentation of emotion datasets and for how to deploy these emotion recognition systems in the wild.
