We show that simple, commercially sourced n-channel silicon field-effect transistors (nFETs) operating under closed loop control exhibit an ~3-fold improvement in pH readout resolution to (7.2+/-0.3)x10^-3 at a bandwidth of 10 Hz when compared with the open loop operation commonly employed by integrated ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs). We leveraged the improved nFET performance to measure the change in solution pH arising from the activity of a pathological form of the kinase Cdk5, an enzyme implicated in Alzheimers disease, and showed quantitative agreement with previous measurements. The improved pH resolution was realized while the devices were operated in a remote sensing configuration with the pH sensing element off-chip and connected electrically to the FET gate terminal. We compared these results with those measured by using a custom-built dual-gate 2D field-effect transistor (dg2DFET) fabricated with 2D semi-conducting MoS2 channels and a moderate device gain, alpha=8. Under identical solution conditions the pH resolution of the nFETs was only 2-fold worse than the dg2DFETs pH resolution of (3.9+/-0.7)x10^-3. Finally, using the nFETs, we demonstrated the effectiveness of a custom polypeptide, p5, as a therapeutic agent in restoring the function of Cdk5. We expect that the straight-forward modifications to commercially sourced nFETs demonstrated here will lower the barrier to widespread adoption of these remote-gate devices and enable sensitive bioanalytical measurements for high throughput screening in drug discovery and precision medicine applications.

A transducer capable of converting quantum information stored as microwaves into telecom-wavelength signals is a critical piece of future quantum technology as it promises to enable the networking of quantum processors. Cavity optomechanical devices that are simultaneously coupled to microwave fields and optical resonances are being pursued in this regard. Yet even in the classical regime, developing optical modulators based on cavity optomechanics could provide lower power or higher bandwidth alternatives to current technology. Here we demonstrate a magnetically-mediated wavelength conversion technique, based on mixing high frequency tones with an optomechanical torsional resonator. This process can act either as an optical phase or amplitude modulator depending on the experimental configuration, and the carrier modulation is always coherent with the input tone. Such coherence allows classical information transduction and transmission via the technique of phase-shift keying. We demonstrate that we can encode up to eight bins of information, corresponding to three bits, simultaneously and demonstrate the transmission of an 52,500 pixel image over 6 km of optical fiber with just 0.67% error. Furthermore, we show that magneto-optomechanical transduction can be described in a fully quantum manner, implying that this is a viable approach to signal transduction at the single quantum level.
We propose a concentrated thermionic emission solar cell design, which demonstrates a high solar-to-electricity energy conversion efficiency larger than 10% under 600 sun, by harnessing the exceptional electrical, thermal and radiative properties of the graphene as a collector electrode. By constructing an analytical model that explicitly takes into account the non-Richardson behavior of the thermionic emission current from graphene, space charge effect in vacuum gap, and the various irreversible energy losses within the subcomponents, we perform a detailed characterization on the conversion efficiency limit and electrical power output characteristics of the proposed system. We systematically model and compare the energy conversion efficiency of various configurations of graphene-graphene and graphene-diamond and diamond-diamond thermionic emitter, and show that utilizing diamond films as an emitter and graphene as a collector offers the highest maximum efficiency, thus revealing the important role of graphene in achieving high-performance thermionic emission solar cell. A maximum efficiency of 12.8% under 800 sun has been revealed, which is significantly higher than several existing solid-state solar cell designs, such as the solar-driven thermoelectric and thermophotovoltaic converters. Our work thus opens up new avenues to advance the efficiency limit of thermionic solar energy conversion and the development of next-generation novel-nanomaterial-based solar energy harvesting technology.
Thanks to the increasing availability of genomics and other biomedical data, many machine learning approaches have been proposed for a wide range of therapeutic discovery and development tasks. In this survey, we review the literature on machine learning applications for genomics through the lens of therapeutic development. We investigate the interplay among genomics, compounds, proteins, electronic health records (EHR), cellular images, and clinical texts. We identify twenty-two machine learning in genomics applications across the entire therapeutics pipeline, from discovering novel targets, personalized medicine, developing gene-editing tools all the way to clinical trials and post-market studies. We also pinpoint seven important challenges in this field with opportunities for expansion and impact. This survey overviews recent research at the intersection of machine learning, genomics, and therapeutic development.
We report on room temperature THz detection by means of antenna-coupled field effect transistors fabricated by using epitaxial graphene grown on silicon carbide substrate. Two independent detection mechanisms are found: plasma wave assisted-detection and thermoelectric effect, which is ascribed to the presence of junctions along the FET channel. The superposition of the calculated functional dependence of both the plasmonic and thermoelectric photovoltages on the gate bias qualitatively well reproduces the measured photovoltages. Additionally, the sign reversal of the measured photovoltage demonstrates the stronger contribution of the plasmonic detection compared to the thermoelectric mechanism. Although responsivity improvement is necessary, these results demonstrate that plasmonic detectors fabricated by epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide are potential candidates for fast large area imaging of macroscopic samples.

High-mobility field effect transistors can serve as resonant detectors of terahertz radiation due to excitation of plasmons in the channel. The modeling of these devices previously relied either on approximate techniques, or complex full-wave simulations. In this paper, we obtain an exact solution for driven electrical oscillations in plasmonic field-effect transistor with realistic contact geometry. The obtained solution highlights the importance of evanescent plasma waves excited near the contacts, which qualitatively modify the detector responsivity spectra. We derive the boundary condition on the ac floating electrodes of plasmonic FET which interpolates between open-circuit (Dyakonov-Shur) and short-circuit (clamped voltage) boundary conditions. In both limits, the FET photovoltage possesses resonant fringes, however, the absolute value of voltage is greater in the open-circuit regime.
