Let $v$ be a product of at most three not necessarily distinct primes. We prove that there exists no strong external difference family with more than two subsets in abelian group $G$ of order $v$, except possibly when $G=C_p^3$ and $p$ is a prime greater than $3 times 10^{12}$.
Let $N(n)$ denote the number of isomorphism types of groups of order $n$. We consider the integers $n$ that are products of at most $4$ not necessarily distinct primes and exhibit formulas for $N(n)$ for such $n$.
Strong external difference family (SEDF) and its generalizations GSEDF, BGSEDF in a finite abelian group $G$ are combinatorial designs raised by Paterson and Stinson [7] in 2016 and have applications in communication theory to construct optimal strong algebraic manipulation detection codes. In this paper we firstly present some general constructions of these combinatorial designs by using difference sets and partial difference sets in $G$. Then, as applications of the general constructions, we construct series of SEDF, GSEDF and BGSEDF in finite fields by using cyclotomic classes.
A subset $B$ of a group $G$ is called a difference basis of $G$ if each element $gin G$ can be written as the difference $g=ab^{-1}$ of some elements $a,bin B$. The smallest cardinality $|B|$ of a difference basis $Bsubset G$ is called the difference size of $G$ and is denoted by $Delta[G]$. The fraction $eth[G]:=frac{Delta[G]}{sqrt{|G|}}$ is called the difference characteristic of $G$. Using properies of the Galois rings, we prove recursive upper bounds for the difference sizes and characteristics of finite Abelian groups. In particular, we prove that for a prime number $pge 11$, any finite Abelian $p$-group $G$ has difference characteristic $eth[G]<frac{sqrt{p}-1}{sqrt{p}-3}cdotsup_{kinmathbb N}eth[C_{p^k}]<sqrt{2}cdotfrac{sqrt{p}-1}{sqrt{p}-3}$. Also we calculate the difference sizes of all Abelian groups of cardinality $<96$.
The groups whose orders factorise into at most four primes have been described (up to isomorphism) in various papers. Given such an order n, this paper exhibits a new explicit and compact determination of the isomorphism types of the groups of order n together with effective algorithms to enumerate, construct, and identify these groups. The algorithms are implemented for the computer algebra system GAP.
Let $X$ be a connected Cayley graph on an abelian group of odd order, such that no two distinct vertices of $X$ have exactly the same neighbours. We show that the direct product $X times K_2$ (also called the canonical double cover of $X$) has only the obvious automorphisms (namely, the ones that come from automorphisms of its factors $X$ and $K_2$). This means that $X$ is stable. The proof is short and elementary. The theory of direct products implies that $K_2$ can be replaced with members of a much more general family of connected graphs.
