We introduce DIODE, a dataset that contains thousands of diverse high resolution color images with accurate, dense, long-range depth measurements. DIODE (Dense Indoor/Outdoor DEpth) is the first public dataset to include RGBD images of indoor and outdoor scenes obtained with one sensor suite. We present a novel approach for estimating depth from a monocular camera as it moves through complex and crowded indoor environments, e.g., a department store or a metro station. Our approach predicts absolute scale depth maps over the entire scene consisting of a static background and multiple moving people, by training on dynamic scenes. Since it is difficult to collect dense depth maps from crowded indoor environments, we design our training framework without requiring depths produced from depth sensing devices. Our network leverages RGB images and sparse depth maps generated from traditional 3D reconstruction methods to estimate dense depth maps. We use two constraints to handle depth for non-rigidly moving people without tracking their motion explicitly. We demonstrate that our approach offers consistent improvements over recent depth estimation methods on the NAVERLABS dataset, which includes complex and crowded scenes.
While depth sensors are becoming increasingly popular, their spatial resolution often remains limited. Depth super-resolution therefore emerged as a solution to this problem. Despite much progress, state-of-the-art techniques suffer from two drawbacks: (i) they rely on the assumption that intensity edges coincide with depth discontinuities, which, unfortunately, is only true in controlled environments; and (ii) they typically exploit the availability of high-resolution training depth maps, which can often not be acquired in practice due to the sensors limitations. By contrast, here, we introduce an approach to performing depth super-resolution in more challenging conditions, such as in outdoor scenes. To this end, we first propose to exploit semantic information to better constrain the super-resolution process. In particular, we design a co-sparse analysis model that learns filters from joint intensity, depth and semantic information. Furthermore, we show how low-resolution training depth maps can be employed in our learning strategy. We demonstrate the benefits of our approach over state-of-the-art depth super-resolution methods on two outdoor scene datasets.
In the upcoming 5G communication, the millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology will play an important role due to its large bandwidth and high data rate. However, mmWave frequencies have higher free-space path loss (FSPL) in line-of-sight (LOS) propagation compared to the currently used sub-6 GHz frequencies. What is more, in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation, the attenuation of mmWave is larger compared to the lower frequencies, which can seriously degrade the performance. It is therefore necessary to investigate mmWave propagation characteristics for a given deployment scenario to understand coverage and rate performance for that environment. In this paper, we focus on 28 GHz wideband mmWave signal propagation characteristics at Johnston Regional Airport (JNX), a local airport near Raleigh, NC. To collect data, we use an NI PXI based channel sounder at 28 GHz for indoor, outdoor, and indoor-to-outdoor scenarios. Results on LOS propagation, reflection, penetration, signal coverage, and multi-path components (MPCs) show a lower indoor FSPL, a richer scattering, and a better coverage compared to outdoor. We also observe high indoor-to-outdoor propagation losses.
We present a method for creating 3D indoor scenes with a generative model learned from a collection of semantic-segmented depth images captured from different unknown scenes. Given a room with a specified size, our method automatically generates 3D objects in a room from a randomly sampled latent code. Different from existing methods that represent an indoor scene with the type, location, and other properties of objects in the room and learn the scene layout from a collection of complete 3D indoor scenes, our method models each indoor scene as a 3D semantic scene volume and learns a volumetric generative adversarial network (GAN) from a collection of 2.5D partial observations of 3D scenes. To this end, we apply a differentiable projection layer to project the generated 3D semantic scene volumes into semantic-segmented depth images and design a new multiple-view discriminator for learning the complete 3D scene volume from 2.5D semantic-segmented depth images. Compared to existing methods, our method not only efficiently reduces the workload of modeling and acquiring 3D scenes for training, but also produces better object shapes and their detailed layouts in the scene. We evaluate our method with different indoor scene datasets and demonstrate the advantages of our method. We also extend our method for generating 3D indoor scenes from semantic-segmented depth images inferred from RGB images of real scenes.
Depth estimation, as a necessary clue to convert 2D images into the 3D space, has been applied in many machine vision areas. However, to achieve an entire surrounding 360-degree geometric sensing, traditional stereo matching algorithms for depth estimation are limited due to large noise, low accuracy, and strict requirements for multi-camera calibration. In this work, for a unified surrounding perception, we introduce panoramic images to obtain larger field of view. We extend PADENet first appeared in our previous conference work for outdoor scene understanding, to perform panoramic monocular depth estimation with a focus for indoor scenes. At the same time, we improve the training process of the neural network adapted to the characteristics of panoramic images. In addition, we fuse traditional stereo matching algorithm with deep learning methods and further improve the accuracy of depth predictions. With a comprehensive variety of experiments, this research demonstrates the effectiveness of our schemes aiming for indoor scene perception.
