The scattering of quasiperiodic waves for a two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with a constant refractive index perturbed by a function which is periodic in one direction and of finite support in the other is considered. The scattering problem is uniquely solvable for almost all frequencies and formulas of Breit-Wigner and Fano type for the reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained in a neighborhood of the resonance (a pole of the reflection coefficient). We indicate also the values of the parameters involved which provide total transmission and reflection. For some exceptional frequencies and perturbations (when the imaginary part of the resonance vanishes) the scattering problem is not uniquely solvable and in the latter case there exist embedded Rayleigh-Bloch modes whose frequencies are explicitly calculated in terms of infinite convergent series in powers of the small parameter characterizing the magnitude of the perturbation.

The properties of the natural modes in a dispersive stratified N-layer medium are investigated. The focus is on the (over)completeness properties of these modes. Also the distribution of the natural frequencies is considered. Both the degree of (over)completeness and the natural frequency distribution turn out to be totally different from what is known for the non-dispersive case.
Exact solutions of the linear water-wave problem describing oblique waves over a submerged horizontal cylinder of small (but otherwise fairly arbitrary) cross-section in a two-layer fluid are constructed in the form of convergent series in powers of the small parameter characterizing the thinness of the cylinder. The terms of these series are expressed through the solution of the exterior Neumann problem for the Laplace equation describing the flow of unbounded fluid past the cylinder. The solutions obtained describe trapped modes corresponding to discrete eigenvalues of the problem (lying close to the cut-off frequency of the continuous spectrum) and resonances lying close to the embedded cut-off. We present certain conditions for the submergence of the cylinder in the upper layer when these resonances convert into previously unobserved embedded trapped modes.

We consider a one-body spin-less electron spectral problem for a resonance scattering system constructed of a quantum well weakly connected to a noncompact exterior reservoir, where the electron is free. The simplest kind of the resonance scattering system is a quantum network, with the reservoir composed of few disjoint cylindrical quantum wires, and the Schr{o}dinger equation on the network, with the real bounded potential on the wells and constant potential on the wires. We propose a Dirichlet-to-Neumann - based analysis to reveal the resonance nature of conductance across the star-shaped element of the network (a junction), derive an approximate formula for the scattering matrix of the junction, construct a fitted zero-range solvable model of the junction and interpret a phenomenological parameter arising in Datta-Das Sarma boundary condition, see {cite{DattaAPL}, for T-junctions. We also propose using of the fitted zero-range solvable model as the first step in a modified analytic perturbation procedure of calculation of the corresponding scattering matrix.
We introduce and study the following model for random resonances: we take a collection of point interactions $Upsilon_j$ generated by a simple finite point process in the 3-D space and consider the resonances of associated random Schrodinger Hamiltonians $H_Upsilon = -Delta + ``sum mathfrak{m}(alpha) delta (x - Upsilon_j)``$. These resonances are zeroes of a random exponential polynomial, and so form a point process $Sigma (H_Upsilon)$ in the complex plane $mathbb{C}$. We show that the counting function for the set of random resonances $Sigma (H_Upsilon)$ in $mathbb{C}$-discs with growing radii possesses Weyl-type asymptotics almost surely for a uniform binomial process $Upsilon$, and obtain an explicit formula for the limiting distribution as $m to infty$ of the leading parameter of the asymptotic chain of `most narrow resonances generated by a sequence of uniform binomial processes $Upsilon^m$ with $m$ points. We also pose a general question about the limiting behavior of the point process formed by leading parameters of asymptotic sequences of resonances. Our study leads to questions about metric characteristics for the combinatorial geometry of $m$ samples of a random point in the 3-D space and related statistics of extreme values.
The focusing Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation is the simplest universal model describing the modulation instability (MI) of quasi monochromatic waves in weakly nonlinear media, and MI is considered the main physical mechanism for the appearence of anomalous (rogue) waves (AWs) in nature. In this paper we study, using the finite gap method, the NLS Cauchy problem for generic periodic initial perturbations of the unstable background solution of NLS (what we call the Cauchy problem of the AWs), in the case of a finite number $N$ of unstable modes. We show how the finite gap method adapts to this specific Cauchy problem through three basic simplifications, allowing one to construct the solution, at the leading and relevant order, in terms of elementary functions of the initial data. More precisely, we show that, at the leading order, i) the initial data generate a partition of the time axis into a sequence of finite intervals, ii) in each interval $I$ of the partition, only a subset of ${cal N}(I)le N$ unstable modes are visible, and iii) the NLS solution is approximated, for $tin I$, by the ${cal N}(I)$-soliton solution of Akhmediev type, describing the nonlinear interaction of these visible unstable modes, whose parameters are expressed in terms of the initial data through elementary functions. This result explains the relevance of the $m$-soliton solutions of Akhmediev type, with $mle N$, in the generic periodic Cauchy problem of the AWs, in the case of a finite number $N$ of unstable modes.
