Single-antenna full-duplex communication technology has the potential to substantially increase spectral efficiency. However, limited propagation domain cancellation of single-antenna system results in a higher impact of receiver chain nonlinearities on the residual self-interference (SI) signal. In this paper, we offer a comprehensive SI model for single-antenna full-duplex systems based on direct-conversion transceiver structure considering nonlinearities of all the transceiver radio frequency (RF) components, in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalances, phase noise effect, and receiver noise figure. To validate our model, we also propose a more appropriate digital SI cancellation approach considering receiver chain RF and baseband nonlinearities. The proposed technique employs orthogonalization of the design matrix using QR decomposition to alleviate the estimation and cancellation error. Finally, through circuit-level waveform simulation, the performance of the digital cancellation strategy is investigated, which achieves 20 dB more cancellation compared to existing methods.

In this paper, we focus on reduced complexity full duplex Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems and present a joint design of digital transmit and receive beamforming with Analog and Digital (A/D) self-interference cancellation. We capitalize on a recently proposed multi-tap analog canceller architecture, whose number of taps does not scale with the number of transceiver antennas, and consider practical transmitter impairments for the full duplex operation. Particularly, transmitter IQ imbalance and nonlinear power amplification are assumed via relevant realistic models. Aiming at suppressing the residual linear and nonlinear self-interference signal below the noise floor, we propose a novel digital self-interference cancellation technique that is jointly designed with the configuration of the analog taps and digital beamformers. Differently from the state of the art, we design pilot-assisted estimation of all involved wireless channels. Our representative Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that our unified full duplex MIMO design exhibits higher self-interference cancellation capability with less analog taps compared to available techniques, which results in improved achievable rate and bit error performance.
Full-duplex (FD) communication is a promising candidate to address the data rate limitations in underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. Because of transmission at the same time and on the same frequency band, the signal from the local transmitter creates self-interference (SI) that contaminates the signal from the remote transmitter. At the local receiver, channel state information for both the SI and remote channels is required to remove the SI and equalize the SI-free signal, respectively. However, because of the rapid time-variations of the UWA environment, real-time tracking of the channels is necessary. In this paper, we propose a receiver for UWA-FD communication in which the variations of the SI and remote channels are jointly tracked by using a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm fed by feedback from the previously detected data symbols. Because of the joint channel estimation, SI cancellation is more successful compared to UWA-FD receivers with separate channel estimators. In addition, due to providing a real-time channel tracking without the need for frequent training sequences, the bandwidth efficiency is preserved in the proposed receiver.
Security is a critical issue in full duplex (FD) communication systems due to the broadcast nature of wireless channels. In this paper, joint design of information and artificial noise beamforming vectors is proposed for the FD simultaneous wireless information and power transferring (FD-SWIPT) systems with loopback self-interference cancellation. To guarantee high security and energy harvesting performance of the FD-SWIPT system, the proposed design is formulated as a secrecy rate maximization problem under energy transfer rate constraints. Although the secrecy rate maximization problem is non-convex, we solve it via semidefinite relaxation and a two-dimensional search. We prove the optimality of our proposed algorithm and demonstrate its performance via simulations.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising technology to fully utilize the precious spectrum and hardware in wireless systems, which has attracted significant attentions recently. This paper studies ISAC for the important and challenging monostatic setup, where one single ISAC node wishes to simultaneously sense a radar target while communicating with a communication receiver. Different from most existing schemes that rely on either radar-centric half-duplex (HD) pulsed transmission with information embedding that suffers from extremely low communication rate, or communication-centric waveform that suffers from degraded sensing performance, we propose a novel full-duplex (FD) ISAC scheme that utilizes the waiting time of conventional pulsed radars to transmit dedicated communication signals. Compared to radar-centric pulsed waveform with information embedding, the proposed design can drastically increase the communication rate, and also mitigate the sensing eclipsing and near-target blind range issues, as long as the self-interference (SI) is effectively suppressed. On the other hand, compared to communication-centric ISAC waveform, the proposed design has better auto-correlation property as it preserves the classic radar waveform for sensing. Performance analysis is developed by taking into account the residual SI, in terms of the probability of detection and ambiguity function for sensing, as well as the spectrum efficiency for communication. Numerical results are provided to show the significant performance gain of our proposed design over benchmark schemes.
This paper studies the potential of harvesting energy from the self-interference of a full-duplex base station. The base station is equipped with a self-interference cancellation switch, which is turned-off for a fraction of the transmission period for harvesting the energy from the self-interference that arises due to the downlink transmission. For the remaining transmission period, the switch is on such that the uplink transmission takes place simultaneously with the downlink transmission. A novel energy-efficiency maximization problem is formulated for the joint design of downlink beamformers, uplink power allocations and transmission time-splitting factor. The optimization problem is nonconvex, and hence, a rapidly converging iterative algorithm is proposed by employing the successive convex approximation approach. Numerical simulation results show significant improvement in the energy-efficiency by allowing self-energy recycling.
