Crowdsourcing information constitutes an important aspect of human-in-the-loop learning for researchers across multiple disciplines such as AI, HCI, and social science. While using crowdsourced data for subjective tasks is not new, eliciting useful insights from such data remains challenging due to a variety of factors such as difficulty of the task, personal prejudices of the human evaluators, lack of question clarity, etc. In this paper, we consider one such subjective evaluation task, namely that of estimating experienced emotions of distressed individuals who are conversing with a human listener in an online coaching platform. We explore strategies to aggregate the evaluators choices, and show that a simple voting consensus is as effective as an optimum aggregation method for the task considered. Intrigued by how an objective assessment would compare to the subjective evaluation of evaluators, we also designed a machine learning algorithm to perform the same task. Interestingly, we observed a machine learning algorithm that is not explicitly modeled to characterize evaluators subjectivity is as reliable as the human evaluation in terms of assessing the most dominant experienced emotions.

Image demosaicking and denoising are the two key fundamental steps in digital camera pipelines, aiming to reconstruct clean color images from noisy luminance readings. In this paper, we propose and study Wild-JDD, a novel learning framework for joint demosaicking and denoising in the wild. In contrast to previous works which generally assume the ground truth of training data is a perfect reflection of the reality, we consider here the more common imperfect case of ground truth uncertainty in the wild. We first illustrate its manifestation as various kinds of artifacts including zipper effect, color moire and residual noise. Then we formulate a two-stage data degradation process to capture such ground truth uncertainty, where a conjugate prior distribution is imposed upon a base distribution. After that, we derive an evidence lower bound (ELBO) loss to train a neural network that approximates the parameters of the conjugate prior distribution conditioned on the degraded input. Finally, to further enhance the performance for out-of-distribution input, we design a simple but effective fine-tuning strategy by taking the input as a weakly informative prior. Taking into account ground truth uncertainty, Wild-JDD enjoys good interpretability during optimization. Extensive experiments validate that it outperforms state-of-the-art schemes on joint demosaicking and denoising tasks on both synthetic and realistic raw datasets.
Differential privacy is a promising framework for addressing the privacy concerns in sharing sensitive datasets for others to analyze. However differential privacy is a highly technical area and current deployments often require experts to write code, tune parameters, and optimize the trade-off between the privacy and accuracy of statistical releases. For differential privacy to achieve its potential for wide impact, it is important to design usable systems that enable differential privacy to be used by ordinary data owners and analysts. PSI is a tool that was designed for this purpose, allowing researchers to release useful differentially private statistical information about their datasets without being experts in computer science, statistics, or privacy. We conducted a thorough usability study of PSI to test whether it accomplishes its goal of usability by non-experts. The usability test illuminated which features of PSI are most user-friendly and prompted us to improve aspects of the tool that caused confusion. The test also highlighted some general principles and lessons for designing usable systems for differential privacy, which we discuss in depth.

Large-scale labeled datasets are the indispensable fuel that ignites the AI revolution as we see today. Most such datasets are constructed using crowdsourcing services such as Amazon Mechanical Turk which provides noisy labels from non-experts at a fair price. The sheer size of such datasets mandates that it is only feasible to collect a few labels per data point. We formulate the problem of test-time label aggregation as a statistical estimation problem of inferring the expected voting score in an ideal world where all workers label all items. By imitating workers with supervised learners and using them in a doubly robust estimation framework, we prove that the variance of estimation can be substantially reduced, even if the learner is a poor approximation. Synthetic and real-world experiments show that by combining the doubly robust approach with adaptive worker/item selection, we often need as low as 0.1 labels per data point to achieve nearly the same accuracy as in the ideal world where all workers label all data points.
In this paper we report the results of a pilot study comparing the older and younger adults interaction with an Android TV application which enables users to detect errors in video subtitles. Overall, the interaction with the TV-mediated crowdsourcing system relying on language profficiency was seen as intuitive, fun and accessible, but also cognitively demanding; more so for younger adults who focused on the task of detecting errors, than for older adults who concentrated more on the meaning and edutainment aspect of the videos. We also discuss participants motivations and preliminary recommendations for the design of TV-enabled crowdsourcing tasks and subtitle QA systems.
Modern machine learning is migrating to the era of complex models, which requires a plethora of well-annotated data. While crowdsourcing is a promising tool to achieve this goal, existing crowdsourcing approaches barely acquire a sufficient amount of high-quality labels. In this paper, motivated by the Guess-with-Hints answer strategy from the Millionaire game show, we introduce the hint-guided approach into crowdsourcing to deal with this challenge. Our approach encourages workers to get help from hints when they are unsure of questions. Specifically, we propose a hybrid-stage setting, consisting of the main stage and the hint stage. When workers face any uncertain question on the main stage, they are allowed to enter the hint stage and look up hints before making any answer. A unique payment mechanism that meets two important design principles for crowdsourcing is developed. Besides, the proposed mechanism further encourages high-quality workers less using hints, which helps identify and assigns larger possible payment to them. Experiments are performed on Amazon Mechanical Turk, which show that our approach ensures a sufficient number of high-quality labels with low expenditure and detects high-quality workers.
