Ultrafast transient phenomena are the most important research field in nonlinear systems, and the mode-locking fiber laser provides an excellent research platform for ultrafast transient phenomena. We report on the experimental observation of multi-soliton asynchronous buildup dynamics in all-polarization-maintaining mode-locked fiber laser. The build-up dynamics display several novel features. The different solitons in multi-soliton generation are produced asynchronously instead of simultaneously. Solitons generated at different time have different propagation speeds at metastable state and same speeds at stable state, indicating that different solitons have different energy at metastable state. The intra-cavity energy exhibits quantization property with respect to the build-up process. A proportion of background pulse vanished with respect to the birth of new pulse, which shows the jungle law in fiber laser system. The buildup dynamics may benefit the research of ultrafast pulse generation, interaction, regulation, energy improvement, and stability improvement.

We report results of numerical simulations on the multiple soliton generation and soliton energy quantization in a soliton fiber ring laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. We found numerically that the formation of multiple solitons in the laser is caused by a peak power limiting effect of the laser cavity. It is also the same effect that suppresses the soliton pulse collapse, an intrinsic feature of solitons propagating in the gain media, and makes the solitons stable in the laser. Furthermore, we show that the soliton energy quantization observed in the lasers is a natural consequence of the gain competition between the multiple solitons. Enlightened by the numerical result we speculate that the multi-soliton formation and soliton energy quantization observed in other types of soliton fiber lasers could have similar mechanism.
In this letter, we investigate a Yb-doped mode-locked fiber oscillator that uses coherent pulse division and recombination to avoid excessive nonlinear phase shifts. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on the accumulation of a differential nonlinear phase between orthogonal polarization modes in the polarization-maintaining fiber segment. The inserted coherent pulse divider, based on YVO4-crystals rotated successively by 45{deg}, enables stable and undistorted mode-locked steady-states. The output pulse energy is increased from 89 pJ in the non-divided operation by ~6.5 dB to more than 400 pJ with three divisions. Measurements of the amplitude-fluctuations reveal a simultaneous broadband reduction of up to ~9 dB in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 2MHz.

Mode-locked lasers exhibit complex nonlinear dynamics. Precise observation of these dynamics will aid in understanding of the underlying physics and provide new insights for laser design and applications. The starting dynamics, from initial noise fluctuations to the mode-locking regime, have previously been observed directly by time-stretched transform-based real-time spectroscopy. However, the regime transition dynamics, which are essential processes in mode-locked lasers, have not yet been resolved because regime transition process tracking is very challenging. Here we demonstrate the first insight into the regime transition dynamics enabled by our design of a real-time programmable mode-locked fibre laser, in which different operating regimes can be achieved and switched automatically. The regime transition dynamics among initial noise fluctuations, Q-switching, fundamental mode-locking and harmonic mode-locking regimes have been observed and thoroughly analysed by both temporal and spectral means. These findings will enrich our understanding of the complex dynamics inside mode-locked lasers.
We study the effect of noise on the dynamics of passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers both experimentally and theoretically. A method combining analytical and numerical approaches for estimation of pulse timing jitter is proposed. We investigate how the presence of dynamical features such as wavelength bistability affects timing jitter.
By means of the emerging Dispersive Fourier transformation technique, we captured the pulse-resolved spectral evolution dynamics of the double-soliton (DS) states in a single-walled carbon nanotube based Er-doped fiber laser from the initial fluctuations, monitoring the evolution process up to 10 seconds (corresponding to ~260 million roundtrips) discontinuously. Two distinctly different evolutionary types of DS states have been investigated in detail: splitting from one pulse and forming simultaneously. Relaxation oscillations, beating, transient bound state, spectral broadening and pulse interval dynamics have been observed in the evolution process of the DS operation. Our study will be helpful for the further research of mode-locking operation.
