A general approach is presented to describing nonlinear classical Maxwell electrodynamics with conformal symmetry. We introduce generalized nonlinear constitutive equations, expressed in terms of constitutive tensors dependent on conformal-invariant functionals of the field strengths. This allows a characterization of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories. We obtain a general formula for possible Lagrangian densities in nonlinear conformal-invariant electrodynamics. This generalizes the standard Lagrangian of classical linear electrodynamics so as to preserve the conformal symmetry.

Formalism of extended Lagrangian represent a systematic procedure to look for the local symmetries of a given Lagrangian action. In this work, the formalism is discussed and applied to a field theory. We describe it in detail for a field theory with first-class constraints present in the Hamiltonian formulation. The method is illustrated on examples of electrodynamics, Yang-Mills field and non-linear sigma model.
In nonlinear electrodynamics, by implementing the causality principle as the requirement that the group velocity of elementary excitations over a background field should not exceed unity, and the unitarity principle as the requirement that the residue of the propagator should be nonnegative, we find restrictions on the behavior of massive and massless dispersion curves and establish the convexity of the effective Lagrangian on the class of constant fields, also the positivity of all characteristic dielectric and magnetic permittivity constants. Violation of the general principles by the one-loop approximation in QED at exponentially large magnetic field is analyzed resulting in complex energy tachyons and super-luminal ghosts that signal the instability of the magnetized vacuum. General grounds for kinematical selection rules in the process of photon splitting/merging are discussed.

We show that the Power-Zienau-Woolley picture of the electrodynamics of nonrelativistic neutral particles (atoms) can be derived from a gauge-invariant Lagrangian without making reference to any gauge whatsoever in the process. This equivalence is independent of choices of canonical field momentum or quantization strategies. In the process, we emphasize that in nonrelativistic (quantum) electrodynamics, the all-time appropriate generalized coordinate for the field is the transverse part of the vector potential, which is itself gauge invariant, and the use of which we recommend regardless of the choice of gauge, since in this way it is possible to sidestep most issues of constraints. Furthermore, we point out a freedom of choice for the conjugate momenta in the respective pictures, the conventional choices being good ones in the sense that they drastically reduce the set of system constraints.
Knotted solutions to electromagnetism are investigated as an independent subsector of the theory. We write down a Lagrangian and a Hamiltonian formulation of Batemans construction for the knotted electromagnetic solutions. We introduce a general definition of the null condition and generalize the construction of Maxwells theory to massless free complex scalar, its dual two form field, and to a massless DBI scalar. We set up the framework for quantizing the theory both in a path integral approach, as well as the canonical Dirac method for a constrained system. We make several observations about the semi-classical quantization of systems of null configurations.

We study the properties of nonlinear superalgebras $mathcal{A}$ and algebras $mathcal{A}_b$ arising from a one-to-one correspondence between the sets of relations that extract AdS-group irreducible representations $D(E_0,s_1,s_2)$ in AdS$_d$-spaces and the sets of operators that form $mathcal{A}$ and $mathcal{A}_b$, respectively, for fermionic, $s_i=n_i+{1/2}$, and bosonic, $s_i=n_i$, $n_i in mathbb{N}_0$, $i=1,2$, HS fields characterized by a Young tableaux with two rows. We consider a method of constructing the Verma modules $V_mathcal{A}$, $V_{mathcal{A}_b}$ for $mathcal{A}$, $mathcal{A}_b$ and establish a possibility of their Fock-space realizations in terms of formal power series in oscillator operators which serve to realize an additive conversion of the above (super)algebra ($mathcal{A}$) $mathcal{A}_b$, containing a set of 2nd-class constraints, into a converted (super)algebra $mathcal{A}_{b{}c}$ = $mathcal{A}_{b}$ + $mathcal{A}_b$ ($mathcal{A}_c$ = $mathcal{A}$ + $mathcal{A}$), containing a set of 1st-class constraints only. For the algebra $mathcal{A}_{b{}c}$, we construct an exact nilpotent BFV--BRST operator $Q$ having nonvanishing terms of 3rd degree in the powers of ghost coordinates and use $Q$ to construct a gauge-invariant Lagrangian formulation (LF) for HS fields with a given mass $m$ (energy $E_0(m)$) and generalized spin $mathbf{s}$=$(s_1,s_2)$. LFs with off-shell algebraic constraints are examined as well.
