We analyze clouds in the earths atmosphere using ground-based sky cameras. An accurate segmentation of clouds in the captured sky/cloud image is difficult, owing to the fuzzy boundaries of clouds. Several techniques have been proposed that use color as the discriminatory feature for cloud detection. In the existing literature, however, analysis of daytime and nighttime images is considered separately, mainly because of differences in image characteristics and applications. In this paper, we propose a light-weight deep-learning architecture called CloudSegNet. It is the first that integrates daytime and nighttime (also known as nychthemeron) image segmentation in a single framework, and achieves state-of-the-art results on public databases.

Semantic image segmentation is the process of labeling each pixel of an image with its corresponding class. An encoder-decoder based approach, like U-Net and its variants, is a popular strategy for solving medical image segmentation tasks. To improve the performance of U-Net on various segmentation tasks, we propose a novel architecture called DoubleU-Net, which is a combination of two U-Net architectures stacked on top of each other. The first U-Net uses a pre-trained VGG-19 as the encoder, which has already learned features from ImageNet and can be transferred to another task easily. To capture more semantic information efficiently, we added another U-Net at the bottom. We also adopt Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) to capture contextual information within the network. We have evaluated DoubleU-Net using four medical segmentation datasets, covering various imaging modalities such as colonoscopy, dermoscopy, and microscopy. Experiments on the MICCAI 2015 segmentation challenge, the CVC-ClinicDB, the 2018 Data Science Bowl challenge, and the Lesion boundary segmentation datasets demonstrate that the DoubleU-Net outperforms U-Net and the baseline models. Moreover, DoubleU-Net produces more accurate segmentation masks, especially in the case of the CVC-ClinicDB and MICCAI 2015 segmentation challenge datasets, which have challenging images such as smaller and flat polyps. These results show the improvement over the existing U-Net model. The encouraging results, produced on various medical image segmentation datasets, show that DoubleU-Net can be used as a strong baseline for both medical image segmentation and cross-dataset evaluation testing to measure the generalizability of Deep Learning (DL) models.

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods have shown their promising performance in the cross-modality medical image segmentation tasks. These typical methods usually utilize a translation network to transform images from the source domain to target domain or train the pixel-level classifier merely using translated source images and original target images. However, when there exists a large domain shift between source and target domains, we argue that this asymmetric structure could not fully eliminate the domain gap. In this paper, we present a novel deep symmetric architecture of UDA for medical image segmentation, which consists of a segmentation sub-network, and two symmetric source and target domain translation sub-networks. To be specific, based on two translation sub-networks, we introduce a bidirectional alignment scheme via a shared encoder and private decoders to simultaneously align features 1) from source to target domain and 2) from target to source domain, which helps effectively mitigate the discrepancy between domains. Furthermore, for the segmentation sub-network, we train a pixel-level classifier using not only original target images and translated source images, but also original source images and translated target images, which helps sufficiently leverage the semantic information from the images with different styles. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method has remarkable advantages compared to the state-of-the-art methods in both cross-modality Cardiac and BraTS segmentation tasks.
We seek to investigate the scalability of neuromorphic computing for computer vision, with the objective of replicating non-neuromorphic performance on computer vision tasks while reducing power consumption. We convert the deep Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architecture U-Net to a Spiking Neural Network (SNN) architecture using the Nengo framework. Both rate-based and spike-based models are trained and optimized for benchmarking performance and power, using a modified version of the ISBI 2D EM Segmentation dataset consisting of microscope images of cells. We propose a partitioning method to optimize inter-chip communication to improve speed and energy efficiency when deploying multi-chip networks on the Loihi neuromorphic chip. We explore the advantages of regularizing firing rates of Loihi neurons for converting ANN to SNN with minimum accuracy loss and optimized energy consumption. We propose a percentile based regularization loss function to limit the spiking rate of the neuron between a desired range. The SNN is converted directly from the corresponding ANN, and demonstrates similar semantic segmentation as the ANN using the same number of neurons and weights. However, the neuromorphic implementation on the Intel Loihi neuromorphic chip is over 2x more energy-efficient than conventional hardware (CPU, GPU) when running online (one image at a time). These power improvements are achieved without sacrificing the task performance accuracy of the network, and when all weights (Loihi, CPU, and GPU networks) are quantized to 8 bits.
We present a deep learning model with temporal memory to detect clouds in image time series acquired by the Seviri imager mounted on the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite. The model provides pixel-level cloud maps with related confidence and propagates information in time via a recurrent neural network structure. With a single model, we are able to outline clouds along all year and during day and night with high accuracy.
We extend first-order model agnostic meta-learning algorithms (including FOMAML and Reptile) to image segmentation, present a novel neural network architecture built for fast learning which we call EfficientLab, and leverage a formal definition of the test error of meta-learning algorithms to decrease error on out of distribution tasks. We show state of the art results on the FSS-1000 dataset by meta-training EfficientLab with FOMAML and using Bayesian optimization to infer the optimal test-time adaptation routine hyperparameters. We also construct a small benchmark dataset, FP-k, for the empirical study of how meta-learning systems perform in both few- and many-shot settings. On the FP-k dataset, we show that meta-learned initializations provide value for canonical few-shot image segmentation but their performance is quickly matched by conventional transfer learning with performance being equal beyond 10 labeled examples.
