The switching dynamics of a single-domain BiFeO$_3$ thin films is investigated through combining the dynamics of polarization and Neel vector. The evolution of the ferroelectric polarization is described by the Landau-Khalatnikov (LK) equation, and the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equations for spins in two sublattices to model the time evolution of the antiferromagnetic order (Neel vector) in a G-type antiferromagnet. This work theoretically demonstrates that due to the rotation of the magnetic hard axis following the polarization reversal, the Neel vector can be switched by 180 degrees, while the weak magnetization can remain unchanged. The simulation results are consistent with the ab initio calculation, where the Neel vector rotates during polarization rotation, and also match our calculation of the dynamics of order parameter using Landau-Ginzburg theory. We also find that the switching time of the Neel vector is determined by the speed polarization switching and is predicted to be as short as 30 ps.

Using the model system of ferroelectric domain walls, we explore the effects of long-range dipolar interactions and periodic ordering on the behavior of pinned elastic interfaces. In piezoresponse force microscopy studies of the characteristic roughening of intrinsic 71{deg} stripe domains in BiFeO$_3$ thin films, we find unexpectedly high values of the roughness exponent {zeta} = 0.74 $pm$ 0.10, significantly different from those obtained for artificially written domain walls in this and other ferroelectric materials. The large value of the exponent suggests that a random field-dominated pinning, combined with stronger disorder and strain effects due to the step-bunching morphology of the samples, could be the dominant source of pinning in the system.
We report a study of the magnetization reversals and skyrmion configurations in two systems - Pt/Co/MgO and Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayers, where magnetic skyrmions are stabilized by a combination of dipolar and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagrams of low-DMI Pt/Co/MgO and high-DMI Ir/Fe/Co/Pt exhibit stark differences, which are identified by micromagnetic simulations to be indicative of hybrid and pure Neel skyrmions, respectively. Tracking the evolution of FORC features in multilayers with dipolar interactions and DMI, we find that the negative FORC valley, typically accompanying the positive FORC peak near saturation, disappears under both reduced dipolar interactions and enhanced DMI. As these conditions favor the formation of pure Neel skyrmions, we propose that the resultant FORC feature - a single positive FORC peak near saturation - can act as a fingerprint for pure Neel skyrmions in multilayers. Our study thus expands on the utility of FORC analysis as a tool for characterizing spin topology in multilayer thin films.
We report on the magnetization dynamics of a square array of mesoscopic discs, fabricated from an iron palladium alloy film. The dynamics properties were explored using ferromagnetic resonance measurements and micromagnetic simulations. The obtained spectra exhibit features resulting from the interactions between the discs, with a clear dependence on both temperature and the direction of the externally applied field. We demonstrate a qualitative agreement between the measured and calculated spectra. Furthermore, we calculated the mode profiles of the standing spin waves excited during a time-dependent magnetic field excitations. The resulting maps confirm that the features appearing in the ferromagnetic resonance absorption spectra originate from the temperature and directional dependent inter-disc interactions.
Nanoscale single-domain bar magnets are building blocks for a variety of fundamental and applied mesoscopic magnetic systems, such as artificial spin ices, magnetic shape-morphing microbots as well as magnetic majority logic gates. The magnetization reversal switching field of the bar nanomagnets is a crucial parameter that determines the physical properties and functionalities of their constituted artificial systems. Previous methods on tuning the magnetization reversal switching field of a bar nanomagnet usually rely on modifying its aspect ratio, such as its length, width and/or thickness. Here, we show that the switching field of a bar nanomagnet saturates when extending its length beyond a certain value, preventing further tailoring of the magnetization reversal via aspect ratios. We showcase highly tunable switching field of a bar nanomagent by tailoring its end geometry without altering its size. This provides an easy method to control the magnetization reversal of a single-domain bar nanomagnet. It would enable new research and/or applications, such as designing artificial spin ices with additional tuning parameters, engineering magnetic microbots with more flexibility as well as developing magnetic quantum-dot cellular automata systems for low power computing.
The switching dynamics of a single-domain BiFeO3/CoFe heterojunction is modeled and key parameters such as interface exchange coupling coefficient are extracted from experimental results. The lower limit of the magnetic order response time of CoFe in the BiFeO3/CoFe heterojunction is theoretically quantified to be on to the order of 100 ps. Our results indicate that the switching behavior of CoFe in the BiFeO3/CoFe heterojunction is dominated by the rotation of the Neel vector in BiFeO3 rather than the unidirectional exchange bias at the interface. We also quantify the magnitude of the interface exchange coupling coefficient J_int to be 0.32 pJ/m by comparing our simulation results with the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) curves and the magnetic hysteresis loop in the experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that J_int is extracted quantitatively from experiments. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the switching success rate and the thermal stability of the BiFeO3/CoFe heterojunction can be improved by reducing the thickness of CoFe and increasing the length to width aspect ratio of the BiFeO3/CoFe heterojunction. Our theoretical model provides a comprehensive framework to study the magnetoelectric properties and the manipulation of the magnetic order of CoFe in the BiFeO3/CoFe heterojunction.
