Domain structure of paracetamol -- popular antipyretic analgesic -- was investigated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. Absorbance and retardance maps reveal molecular orientation inside the micro-domains of the paracetamol form II which has a better water solubility and compressibility compared to the commercially used forms I. The developed method of analysis representing orientation of optical slow(fast)-axis is compared with azimuthal orientation of the absorbance at several specific IR bands using vector maps. High brightness of synchrotron radiation and hyper-spectral mapping of structural domains in paracetamol clearly reveals the domain boundaries and can potentially be used to observe emph{in situ} intra-phase transformations of paracetamol forms-I, II, III and melting, which are important for making medical tablets and powders by an industrial process.

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is an extremely powerful probe of materials to access the occupied electronic structure with energy and momentum resolution. However, it remains blind to those dynamic states above the Fermi level that determine technologically relevant transport properties. In this work, we extend band structure mapping into the unoccupied states and across the entire Brillouin zone by using a state-of-the-art high repetition rate, extreme ultraviolet fem- tosecond light source to probe optically excited samples. The wide-ranging applicability and power of this approach are demonstrated by measurements on the 2D semiconductor WSe2, where the energy-momentum dispersion of valence and conduction bands are observed in a single experiment. This provides a direct momentum-resolved view not only on the complete out-of-equilibrium band gap but also on its renormalization induced by electron-hole interaction and screening. Our work establishes a new benchmark for measuring the band structure of materials, with direct access to the energy-momentum dispersion of the excited-state spectral function.

High-resolution Brillouin scattering is used to achieve 3-dimensional maps of the longitudinal acoustic mode frequency shift in soda-lime silicate glasses subject to Vickers indentations. Assuming that residual stress-induced effects are simply proportional to density changes, residual densification fields are obtained. The density gradient is nearly isotropic, confirming earlier optical observations made on a similar glass. The results show that Brillouin micro-spectroscopy opens the way to a fully quantitative comparison of experimental data with predictions of mechanical models for the identification of a constitutive law.
Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their heterostructures, with wafer-scale synthesis methods and fascinating properties, have attracted numerous interest and triggered revolutions of corresponding device applications. However, facile methods to realize accurate, intelligent and large-area characterizations of these 2D structures are still highly desired. Here, we report a successful application of machine-learning strategy in the optical identification of 2D structure. The machine-learning optical identification method (MOI method) endows optical microscopy with intelligent insight into the characteristic colour information in the optical photograph. Experimental results indicate that the MOI method enables accurate, intelligent and large-area characterizations of graphene, molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and their heterostructures, including identifications of the thickness, the existence of impurities, and even the stacking order. Thanks to the convergence of artificial intelligence and nanoscience, this intelligent identification method can certainly promote the fundamental research and wafer-scale device application of 2D structures.

Microstructure characterization is of great value to understanding nuclear graphites properties and irradiation behavior. However, graphite is soft and could be easily damaged during sample preparation. A three-step polishing method involving mechanical polishing, ion milling and rapid oxidation is proposed for graphite. Ion milling is adopted to remove the broken graphite pieces produced by mechanical polishing. Rapid oxidation is then adopted to remove irradiation-induced damage layer during ion milling. The Raman spectra show very low G peak width and ID/IG ratio after rapid oxidation, indicating a surface completely free from artificial defects. The micro-cracks which were conventionally observed via a transmission electron microscope can be observed on rapid-oxidized surface in a scanning electron microscope. By digital image processing, the micro-cracks along with the gas-escape pores in nuclear graphite IG-110 are statistically analyzed. Porositys distributions on crack (pore) size (spanning from 10 nm to 100 um) are given, which could help to understand and simulate graphites performances in reactors.
A perpendicular electric field breaks the layer symmetry of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene, resulting in the opening of a band gap and a modification of the effective mass of the charge carriers. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we examine standing waves in the local density of states of bilayer graphene formed by scattering from a bilayer/trilayer boundary. The quasiparticle interference properties are controlled by the bilayer graphene band structure, allowing a direct local probe of the evolution of the band structure of bilayer graphene as a function of electric field. We extract the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model tight binding parameters as $gamma_0 = 3.1$ eV, $gamma_1 = 0.39$ eV, and $gamma_4 = 0.22$ eV.
