In this work, we propose a novel approach for high accuracy user localization by merging tools from both millimeter wave (mmWave) imaging and communications. The key idea of the proposed solution is to leverage mmWave imaging to construct a high-resolution 3D image of the line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) objects in the environment at one antenna array. Then, uplink pilot signaling with the user is used to estimate the angle-of-arrival and time-of-arrival of the dominant channel paths. By projecting the AoA and ToA information on the 3D mmWave images of the environment, the proposed solution can locate the user with a sub-centimeter accuracy. This approach has several gains. First, it allows accurate simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) from a single standpoint, i.e., using only one antenna array. Second, it does not require any prior knowledge of the surrounding environment. Third, it can locate NLOS users, even if their signals experience more than one reflection and without requiring an antenna array at the user. The approach is evaluated using a hardware setup and its ability to provide sub-centimeter localization accuracy is shown.
This study considers the joint location and velocity estimation of UE and scatterers in a three-dimensional mmWave CRAN architecture. Several existing works have achieved satisfactory results with neural networks (NNs) for localization. However, the black box NN localization method has limited performance and relies on a prohibitive amount of training data. Thus, we propose a model-based learning network for localization by combining NNs with geometric models. Specifically, we first develop an unbiased WLS estimator by utilizing hybrid delay/angular measurements, which determine the location and velocity of the UE in only one estimator, and can obtain the location and velocity of scatterers further. The proposed estimator can achieve the CRLB and outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Second, we establish a NN-assisted localization method (NN-WLS) by replacing the linear approximations in the proposed WLS localization model with NNs to learn higher-order error components, thereby enhancing the performance of the estimator. The solution possesses the powerful learning ability of the NN and the robustness of the proposed geometric model. Moreover, the ensemble learning is applied to improve the localization accuracy further. Comprehensive simulations show that the proposed NN-WLS is superior to the benchmark methods in terms of localization accuracy, robustness, and required time resources.
High-speed trains (HSTs) are being widely deployed around the world. To meet the high-rate data transmission requirements on HSTs, millimeter wave (mmWave) HST communications have drawn increasingly attentions. To realize sufficient link margin, mmWave HST systems employ directional beamforming with large antenna arrays, which results in that the channel estimation is rather time-consuming. In HST scenarios, channel conditions vary quickly and channel estimations should be performed frequently. Since the period of each transmission time interval (TTI) is too short to allocate enough time for accurate channel estimation, the key challenge is how to design an efficient beam searching scheme to leave more time for data transmission. Motivated by the successful applications of machine learning, this paper tries to exploit the similarities between current and historical wireless propagation environments. Using the knowledge of reinforcement learning, the beam searching problem of mmWave HST communications is formulated as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem and a bandit inspired beam searching scheme is proposed to reduce the number of measurements as many as possible. Unlike the popular deep learning methods, the proposed scheme does not need to collect and store a massive amount of training data in advance, which can save a huge amount of resources such as storage space, computing time, and power energy. Moreover, the performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of regret. The regret analysis indicates that the proposed schemes can approach the theoretical limit very quickly, which is further verified by simulation results.
Future cellular networks that utilize millimeter wave signals provide new opportunities in positioning and situational awareness. Large bandwidths combined with large antenna arrays provide unparalleled delay and angle resolution, allowing high accuracy localization but also building up a map of the environment. Even the most basic filter intended for simultaneous localization and mapping exhibits high computational overhead since the methods rely on sigma point or particle-based approximations. In this paper, a first order Taylor series based Gaussian approximation of the filtering distribution is used and it is demonstrated that the developed extended Kalman probability hypothesis density filter is computationally very efficient. In addition, the results imply that efficiency does not come with the expense of estimation accuracy since the method nearly achieves the position error bound.
Location information offered by external positioning systems, e.g., satellite navigation, can be used as prior information in the process of beam alignment and channel parameter estimation for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output networks. Benefiting from the availability of such prior information, albeit imperfect, the beam alignment and channel parameter estimation processes can be significantly accelerated with less candidate beams explored at all the terminals. We propose a practical channel parameter estimation method via atomic norm minimization, which outperforms the standard beam alignment in terms of both the mean square error and the effective spectrum efficiency for the same training overhead.
In this paper, we present a robust multipath-based localization and mapping framework that exploits the phases of specular multipath components (MPCs) using a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array at the base station. Utilizing the phase information related to the propagation distances of the MPCs enables the possibility of localization with extraordinary accuracy even with limited bandwidth. The specular MPC parameters along with the parameters of the noise and the dense multipath component (DMC) are tracked using an extended Kalman filter (EKF), which enables to preserve the distance-related phase changes of the MPC complex amplitudes. The DMC comprises all non-resolvable MPCs, which occur due to finite measurement aperture. The estimation of the DMC parameters enhances the estimation quality of the specular MPCs and therefore also the quality of localization and mapping. The estimated MPC propagation distances are subsequently used as input to a distance-based localization and mapping algorithm. This algorithm does not need prior knowledge about the surrounding environment and base station position. The performance is demonstrated with real radio-channel measurements using an antenna array with 128 ports at the base station side and a standard cellular signal bandwidth of 40 MHz. The results show that high accuracy localization is possible even with such a low bandwidth.
