High-speed trains (HSTs) are being widely deployed around the world. To meet the high-rate data transmission requirements on HSTs, millimeter wave (mmWave) HST communications have drawn increasingly attentions. To realize sufficient link margin, mmWave HST systems employ directional beamforming with large antenna arrays, which results in that the channel estimation is rather time-consuming. In HST scenarios, channel conditions vary quickly and channel estimations should be performed frequently. Since the period of each transmission time interval (TTI) is too short to allocate enough time for accurate channel estimation, the key challenge is how to design an efficient beam searching scheme to leave more time for data transmission. Motivated by the successful applications of machine learning, this paper tries to exploit the similarities between current and historical wireless propagation environments. Using the knowledge of reinforcement learning, the beam searching problem of mmWave HST communications is formulated as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem and a bandit inspired beam searching scheme is proposed to reduce the number of measurements as many as possible. Unlike the popular deep learning methods, the proposed scheme does not need to collect and store a massive amount of training data in advance, which can save a huge amount of resources such as storage space, computing time, and power energy. Moreover, the performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of regret. The regret analysis indicates that the proposed schemes can approach the theoretical limit very quickly, which is further verified by simulation results.
With the development of wireless communication, higher requirements arise for train-ground wireless communications in high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios. The millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency band with rich spectrum resources can provide users in HSR scenarios with high performance broadband multimedia services, while the full-duplex (FD) technology has become mature. In this paper, we study train-ground communication system performance in HSR scenarios with mobile relays (MRs) mounted on rooftop of train and operating in the FD mode. We formulate a nonlinear programming problem to maximize network capacity by allocation of spectrum resources. Then, we develop a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm based on the Lagrange function to solve the bandwidth allocation optimization problem for track-side base station (BS) and MRs in this mm-wave train-ground communication system. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SQP algorithm can effectively achieve high network capacity for trainground communication in HSR scenarios while being robust to the residual self-interference (SI).
Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, we investigate the indoor positioning accuracy of optical based OFDM techniques used in VLC systems. A positioning algorithm based on power attenuation is used to estimate the receiver coordinates. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those of single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. We demonstrate that OFDM positioning system outperforms its conventional counterpart.
In this work, we propose a novel approach for high accuracy user localization by merging tools from both millimeter wave (mmWave) imaging and communications. The key idea of the proposed solution is to leverage mmWave imaging to construct a high-resolution 3D image of the line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) objects in the environment at one antenna array. Then, uplink pilot signaling with the user is used to estimate the angle-of-arrival and time-of-arrival of the dominant channel paths. By projecting the AoA and ToA information on the 3D mmWave images of the environment, the proposed solution can locate the user with a sub-centimeter accuracy. This approach has several gains. First, it allows accurate simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) from a single standpoint, i.e., using only one antenna array. Second, it does not require any prior knowledge of the surrounding environment. Third, it can locate NLOS users, even if their signals experience more than one reflection and without requiring an antenna array at the user. The approach is evaluated using a hardware setup and its ability to provide sub-centimeter localization accuracy is shown.
We investigate the optimality and power allocation algorithm of beam domain transmission for single-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a multi-antenna passive eavesdropper. Focusing on the secure massive MIMO downlink transmission with only statistical channel state information of legitimate users and the eavesdropper at base station, we introduce a lower bound on the achievable ergodic secrecy sum-rate, from which we derive the condition for eigenvectors of the optimal input covariance matrices. The result shows that beam domain transmission can achieve optimal performance in terms of secrecy sum-rate lower bound maximization. For the case of single-antenna legitimate users, we prove that it is optimal to allocate no power to the beams where the beam gains of the eavesdropper are stronger than those of legitimate users in order to maximize the secrecy sum-rate lower bound. Then, motivated by the concave-convex procedure and the large dimension random matrix theory, we develop an efficient iterative and convergent algorithm to optimize power allocation in the beam domain. Numerical simulations demonstrate the tightness of the secrecy sum-rate lower bound and the near-optimal performance of the proposed iterative algorithm.
The performance of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications critically depends on the accuracy of beamforming both at base station (BS) and user terminals (UEs) due to high isotropic path-loss and channel attenuation. In high mobility environments, accurate beam alignment becomes even more challenging as the angles of the BS and each UE must be tracked reliably and continuously. In this work, focusing on the beamforming at the BS, we propose an adaptive method based on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) that tracks and predicts the Angle of Departure (AoD) of a given UE. Moreover, we propose a modified frame structure to reduce beam alignment overhead and hence increase the communication rate. Our numerical experiments in a highly non-linear mobility scenario show that our proposed method is able to track the AoD accurately and achieve higher communication rate compared to more traditional methods such as the particle filter.
