We analyze the phase diagram of the exact ground state (GS) of spin-$s$ chains with ferromagnetic $XXZ$ couplings under $n$-alternating field configurations, i.e, sparse alternating fields having nodes at $n-1$ contiguous sites. It is shown that such systems can exhibit a non-trivial magnetic behavior, which can differ significantly from that of the standard ($n=1$) alternating case and enable mechanisms for controlling their magnetic and entanglement properties. The boundary in field space of the fully aligned phase can be determined analytically $forall,n$, and shows that it becomes reachable only above a threshold value of the coupling anisotropy $J_z/J$, which depends on $n$ but is independent of the system size. Below this value the maximum attainable magnetization becomes much smaller. We then show that the GS can exhibit significant magnetization plateaus, persistent for large systems, at which the magnetization per site $m$ obeys the quantization rule $2n(s-m)=integer$, consistent with the Oshikawa, Yamanaka and Affleck (OYA) criterion. We also identify the emergence of field induced spin polymerization, which explains the presence of such plateaus. Entanglement and field induced frustration effects are also analyzed.

We compute critical properties of a general class of quantum spin chains which are quadratic in the Fermi operators and can be solved exactly under certain symmetry constraints related to the classical compact groups $U(N)$, $O(N)$ and $Sp(2N)$. In particular we calculate critical exponents $s$, $ u$ and $z$, corresponding to the energy gap, correlation length and dynamic exponent respectively. We also compute the ground state correlators $leftlangle sigma^{x}_{i} sigma^{x}_{i+n} rightrangle_{g}$, $leftlangle sigma^{y}_{i} sigma^{y}_{i+n} rightrangle_{g}$ and $leftlangle prod^{n}_{i=1} sigma^{z}_{i} rightrangle_{g}$, all of which display quasi-long-range order with a critical exponent dependent upon system parameters. Our approach establishes universality of the exponents for the class of systems in question.
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependece of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q=pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Thermodynamic properties of a tetrameric bond-alternating Heisenberg spin chain with ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic exchange interactions are studied using the transfer-matrix renormalization group and compared to experimental measurements. The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility exhibits typical ferrimagnetic features. Both the uniform and staggered magnetic susceptibilities diverge in the limit $Tto 0$, indicating that the ground state has both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range orders. A double-peak structure appears in the temperature dependence of the specific heat. Our numerical calculation gives a good account for the temperature and field dependence of the susceptibility, the magnetization, and the specific heat for Cu(3-Clpy)$_{2}$(N$_{3}$)$_{2}$ (3-Clpy=3-Chloroyridine).
We advocate that in critical spin chains, and possibly in a larger class of 1D critical models, a gap in the momentum-space entanglement spectrum separates the universal part of the spectrum, which is determined by the associated conformal field theory, from the non-universal part, which is specific to the model. To this end, we provide affirmative evidence from multicritical spin chains with low energy sectors described by the SU(2)$_2$ or the SU(3)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model.
The ground state spin-wave excitations and thermodynamic properties of two types of ferrimagnetic chains are investigated: the alternating spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain and a similar chain with a spin-1/2 pendant attached to the spin-5/2 site. Results for magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat are obtained through the finite-temperature Lanczos method with the aim in describing available experimental data, as well as comparison with theoretical results from the semiclassical approximation and the low-temperature susceptibility expansion derived from Takahashis modified spin-wave theory. In particular, we study in detail the temperature vs. magnetic field phase diagram of the spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain, in which several low-temperature quantum phases are identified: the Luttinger Liquid phase, the ferrimagnetic plateau and the fully polarized one, and the respective quantum critical points and crossover lines.
