Quantum bits (qubits) with long coherence times are an important element for the implementation of medium- and large-scale quantum computers. In the case of superconducting planar qubits, understanding and improving qubits quality can be achieved by studying superconducting planar resonators. In this Paper, we fabricate and characterize coplanar waveguide resonators made from aluminum thin films deposited on silicon substrates. We perform three different substrate treatments prior to aluminum deposition: One chemical treatment based on a hydrofluoric acid clean, one physical treatment consisting of a thermal annealing at 880 degree Celsius in high vacuum, one combined treatment comprising both the chemical and the physical treatments. We first characterize the fabricated samples through cross-sectional tunneling electron microscopy acquiring electron energy loss spectroscopy maps of the samples cross sections. These measurements show that both the chemical and the physical treatments almost entirely remove native silicon oxide from the substrate surface and that their combination results in the cleanest interface. We then study the quality of the resonators by means of microwave measurements in the quantum regime, i.e., at a temperature T~10 mK and at a mean microwave photon number $langle n_{textrm{ph}} rangle sim 1$. In this regime, we find that both surface treatments independently improve the resonators intrinsic quality factor and that the highest quality factor is obtained for the combined treatment, $Q_{textrm{i}} sim 0.8$ million. Finally, we find that the TLS quality factor averaged over a time period of 3 h is $sim 3$ million at $langle n_{textrm{ph}} rangle sim 10$, indicating that substrate surface engineering can potentially reduce the TLS loss below other losses such as quasiparticle and vortex loss.

In this work, we find that Al cladding on Nb microstrip resonators is an efficient way to suppress nonlinear responses induced by local Joule heating, resulting in improved microwave power handling capability. This improvement is likely due to the proximity effect between the Al and the Nb layers. The proximity effect is found to be controllable by tuning the thickness of the Al layer. We show that improving the film quality is also helpful as it enhances the microwave critical current density, but it cannot eliminate the local heating.

We present microwave-frequency NbTiN resonators on silicon, systematically achieving internal quality factors above 1 M in the quantum regime. We use two techniques to reduce losses associated with two-level systems: an additional substrate surface treatment prior to NbTiN deposition to optimize the metal-substrate interface, and deep reactive-ion etching of the substrate to displace the substrate-vacuum interfaces away from high electric fields. The temperature and power dependence of resonator behavior indicate that two-level systems still contribute significantly to energy dissipation, suggesting that more interface optimization could further improve performance.
Dielectric measurements on insulating materials at cryogenic temperatures can be challenging, depending on the frequency and temperature ranges of interest. We present a technique to study the dielectric properties of bulk dielectrics at GHz frequencies. A superconducting coplanar Nb resonator is deposited directly on the material of interest, and this resonator is then probed in distant-flip-chip geometry with a microwave feedline on a separate chip. Evaluating several harmonics of the resonator gives access to various probing frequencies, in the present studies up to 20 GHz. We demonstrate the technique on three different materials (MgO, LaAlO3, and TiO2), at temperatures between 1.4 K and 7 K.
Ultra low-loss microwave materials are crucial for enhancing quantum coherence and scalability of superconducting qubits. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure is an attractive platform for quantum devices due to the single-crystal structure of the constituent two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and the lack of dangling bonds at their atomically sharp interfaces. However, new fabrication and characterization techniques are required to determine whether these structures can achieve low loss in the microwave regime. Here we report the fabrication of superconducting microwave resonators using NbSe$_2$ that achieve a quality factor $Q > 10^5$. This value sets an upper bound that corresponds to a resistance of $leq 192 muOmega$ when considering the additional loss introduced by integrating NbSe$_2$ into a standard transmon circuit. This work demonstrates the compatibility of 2D layered materials with high-quality microwave quantum devices.

Majorana quasiparticles (MQPs) in condensed matter play an important role in strategies for topological quantum computing but still remain elusive. Vortex cores of topological superconductors may accommodate MQPs that appear as the zero-energy vortex bound state (ZVBS). An iron-based superconductor Fe(Se,Te) possesses a superconducting topological surface state that has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopies to detect the ZVBS. However, the results are still controversial. Here, we performed spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy with unprecedentedly high energy resolution to clarify the nature of the vortex bound states in Fe(Se,Te). We found the ZVBS at 0 $pm$ 20 $mu$eV suggesting its MQP origin, and revealed that some vortices host the ZVBS while others do not. The fraction of vortices hosting the ZVBS decreases with increasing magnetic field, while chemical and electronic quenched disorders are apparently unrelated to the ZVBS. These observations elucidate the conditions to achieve the ZVBS, and may lead to controlling MQPs.
