The Milnor Problem (modified) in the theory of group growth asks whether any finite presented group of vanishing algebraic entropy has at most polynomial growth. We show that a positive answer to the Milnor Problem (modified) is equivalent to the Nilpotency Conjecture in Riemannian geometry: given $n, d>0$, there exists a constant $epsilon(n,d)>0$ such that if a compact Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ satisfies that Ricci curvature $op{Ric}_Mge -(n-1)$, diameter $dge op{diam}(M)$ and volume entropy $h(M)<epsilon(n,d)$, then the fundamental group $pi_1(M)$ is virtually nilpotent. We will verify the Nilpotency Conjecture in some cases, and we will verify the vanishing gap phenomena for more cases i.e., if $h(M)<epsilon(n,d)$, then $h(M)=0$.

We introduce a dynamical-systems approach for the study of the Sard problem in sub-Riemannian Carnot groups. We show that singular curves can be obtained by concatenating trajectories of suitable dynamical systems. As an applications, we positively answer the Sard problem in some classes of Carnot groups.
We consider the natural generalization of the parabolic Monge-Amp`ere equation to HKT geometry. We prove that in the compact case the equation has always a short-time solution and when the hypercomplex manifold is locally flat and admits a hyperkahler metric, then the equation has a long-time solution whose normalization converges to a solution of the quaternionic Monge-Amp`ere equation introduced by Alesker and Verbitsky. The result gives an alternative proof of a theorem of Alesker.
We propose a discretization of classical confocal coordinates. It is based on a novel characterization thereof as factorizable orthogonal coordinate systems. Our geometric discretization leads to factorizable discrete nets with a novel discrete analog of the orthogonality property. A discrete confocal coordinate system may be constructed geometrically via polarity with respect to a sequence of classical confocal quadrics. Various sequences correspond to various discrete parametrizations. The coordinate functions of discrete confocal quadrics are computed explicitly. The theory is illustrated with a variety of examples in two and three dimensions. These include confocal coordinate systems parametrized in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. Connections with incircular (IC) nets and a generalized Euler-Poisson-Darboux system are established.
For a classical link, Milnor defined a family of isotopy invariants, called Milnor $overline{mu}$-invariants. Recently, Chrisman extended Milnor $overline{mu}$-invariants to welded links by a topological approach. The aim of this paper is to show that Milnor $overline{mu}$-invariants can be extended to welded links by a combinatorial approach. The proof contains an alternative proof for the invariance of the original $overline{mu}$-invariants of classical links.
We consider a geometric flow introduced by Gigli and Mantegazza which, in the case of smooth compact manifolds with smooth metrics, is tangen- tial to the Ricci flow almost-everywhere along geodesics. To study spaces with geometric singularities, we consider this flow in the context of smooth manifolds with rough metrics with sufficiently regular heat kernels. On an appropriate non- singular open region, we provide a family of metric tensors evolving in time and provide a regularity theory for this flow in terms of the regularity of the heat kernel. When the rough metric induces a metric measure space satisfying a Riemannian Curvature Dimension condition, we demonstrate that the distance induced by the flow is identical to the evolving distance metric defined by Gigli and Mantegazza on appropriate admissible points. Consequently, we demonstrate that a smooth compact manifold with a finite number of geometric conical singularities remains a smooth manifold with a smooth metric away from the cone points for all future times. Moreover, we show that the distance induced by the evolving metric tensor agrees with the flow of RCD(K, N) spaces defined by Gigli-Mantegazza.
