We analyze in the Landau gauge mixing of bosonic fields in gauge theories with exact and spontaneously broken symmetries, extending to this case the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) formalism of the asymptotic fields. Factorization of residues of poles (at real and complex values of the variable $p^2$) is demonstrated and a simple practical prescription for finding the square-rooted residues, necessary for calculating $S$-matrix elements, is given. The pseudo-Fock space of asymptotic (in the LSZ sense) states is explicitly constructed and its BRST-cohomological structure is elucidated. Usefulness of these general results, obtained by investigating the relevant set of Slavnov-Taylor identities, is illustrated on the one-loop examples of the $Z^0$-photon mixing in the Standard Model and the $G_Z$-Majoron mixing in the singlet Majoron model.

Lehmann, Symanzik and Zimmermann (LSZ) proved a theorem showing how to obtain the S-matrix from time-ordered Green functions. Their result, the reduction formula, is fundamental to practical calculations of scattering processes. A known problem is that the operators that they use to create asymptotic states create much else besides the intended particles for a scattering process. In the infinite-time limits appropriate to scattering, the extra contributions only disappear in matrix elements with normalizable states, rather than in the created states themselves, i.e., the infinite-time limits of the LSZ creation operators are weak limits. The extra particles that are created are in a different region of space-time than the intended scattering process. To be able to work with particle creation at non-asymptotic times, e.g., to give a transparent and fully deductive treatment for scattering with long-lived unstable particles, it is necessary to have operators for which the infinite-time limits are strong limits. In this paper, I give an improved method of constructing such operators. I use them to give an improved systematic account of scattering theory in relativistic quantum field theories, including a new proof of the reduction formula. I make explicit calculations to illustrate the problems with the LSZ operators and their solution with the new operators. Not only do these verify the existence of the extra particles created by the LSZ operators and indicate a physical interpretation, but they also show that the extra components are so large that their contribution to the norm of the state is ultra-violet divergent in renormalizable theories. Finally, I discuss the relation of this work to the work of Haag and Ruelle on scattering theory.
We study axion effective field theories (EFTs), with a focus on axion couplings to massive chiral gauge fields. We investigate the EFT interactions that participate in processes with an axion and two gauge bosons, and we show that, when massive chiral gauge fields are present, such interactions do not entirely originate from the usual anomalous EFT terms. We illustrate this both at the EFT level and by matching to UV-complete theories. In order to assess the consistency of the Peccei--Quinn (PQ) anomaly matching, it is useful to introduce an auxiliary, non-dynamical gauge field associated to the PQ symmetry. When applied to the case of the Standard Model (SM) electroweak sector, our results imply that anomaly-based sum rules between EFT interactions are violated when chiral matter is integrated out, which constitutes a smoking gun of the latter. As an illustration, we study a UV-complete chiral extension of the SM, containing an axion arising from an extended Higgs sector and heavy fermionic matter that obtains most of its mass by coupling to the Higgs doublets. We assess the viability of such a SM extension through electroweak precision tests, bounds on Higgs rates and direct searches for heavy charged matter. At energies below the mass of the new chiral fermions, the model matches onto an EFT where the electroweak gauge symmetry is non-linearly realised.
We study out-of-equilibrium dynamics of intense non-abelian gauge fields. Generalizing the well-known Nielsen-Olesen instabilities for constant initial color-magnetic fields, we investigate the impact of temporal modulations and fluctuations in the initial conditions. This leads to a remarkable coexistence of the original Nielsen-Olesen instability and the subdominant phenomenon of parametric resonance. Taking into account that the fields may be correlated only over a limited transverse size, we model characteristic aspects of the dynamics of color flux tubes relevant in the context of heavy-ion collisions.
Dynamical localization of non-Abelian gauge fields in non-compact flat $D$ dimensions is worked out. The localization takes place via a field-dependent gauge kinetic term when a field condenses in a finite region of spacetime. Such a situation typically arises in the presence of topological solitons. We construct four-dimensional low-energy effective Lagrangian up to the quadratic order in a universal manner applicable to any spacetime dimensions. We devise an extension of the $R_xi$ gauge to separate physical and unphysical modes clearly. Out of the D-dimensional non-Abelian gauge fields, the physical massless modes reside only in the four-dimensional components, whereas they are absent in the extra-dimensional components. The universality of non-Abelian gauge charges holds due to the unbroken four-dimensional gauge invariance. We illustrate our methods with models in $D=5$ (domain walls), in $D=6$ (vortices), and in $D=7$.
We propose to investigate infrared properties of gluon and ghost propagators related to the so-called Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario, originally formulated for Landau and Coulomb gauges, for other gauges as well. We present results of our investigation of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge (MAG), focusing on the behavior of propagators in the off-diagonal (i.e. non-Abelian) sector. We also comment on our preliminary results for general linear covariant gauges, in particular for Feynman gauge.
