Ultra wideband technology has shown great promise for providing high-quality location estimation, even in complex indoor multipath environments, but existing ultra wideband systems require tens to hundreds of milliwatts during operation. Backscatter communication has demonstrated the viability of astonishingly low-power tags, but has thus far been restricted to narrowband systems with low localization resolution. The challenge to combining these complimentary technologies is that they share a compounding limitation, constrained transmit power. Regulations limit ultra wideband transmissions to just -41.3 dBm/MHz, and a backscatter device can only reflect the power it receives. The solution is long-term integration of this limited power, lifting the initially imperceptible signal out of the noise. This integration only works while the target is stationary. However, stationary describes the vast majority of objects, especially lost ones. With this insight, we design Slocalization, a sub-microwatt, decimeter-accurate localization system that opens a new tradeoff space in localization systems and realizes an energy, size, and cost point that invites the localization of every thing. To evaluate this concept, we implement an energy-harvesting Slocalization tag and find that Slocalization can recover ultra wideband backscatter in under fifteen minutes across thirty meters of space and localize tags with a mean 3D Euclidean error of only 30 cm.

In this paper, we develop a new framework called blockchain-based Radio Frequency (RF)-powered backscatter cognitive radio network. In the framework, IoT devices as secondary transmitters transmit their sensing data to a secondary gateway by using the RF-powered backscatter cognitive radio technology. The data collected at the gateway is then sent to a blockchain network for further verification, storage and processing. As such, the framework enables the IoT system to simultaneously optimize the spectrum usage and maximize the energy efficiency. Moreover, the framework ensures that the data collected from the IoT devices is verified, stored and processed in a decentralized but in a trusted manner. To achieve the goal, we formulate a stochastic optimization problem for the gateway under the dynamics of the primary channel, the uncertainty of the IoT devices, and the unpredictability of the blockchain environment. In the problem, the gateway jointly decides (i) the time scheduling, i.e., the energy harvesting time, backscatter time, and transmission time, among the IoT devices, (ii) the blockchain network, and (iii) the transaction fee rate to maximize the network throughput while minimizing the cost. To solve the stochastic optimization problem, we then propose to employ, evaluate, and assess the Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) with Dueling Double Deep Q-Networks (D3QN) to derive the optimal policy for the gateway. The simulation results clearly show that the proposed solution outperforms the conventional baseline approaches such as the conventional Q-Learning algorithm and non-learning algorithms in terms of network throughput and convergence speed. Furthermore, the proposed solution guarantees that the data is stored in the blockchain network at a reasonable cost.

Relative localization between autonomous robots without infrastructure is crucial to achieve their navigation, path planning, and formation in many applications, such as emergency response, where acquiring a prior knowledge of the environment is not possible. The traditional Ultra-WideBand (UWB)-based approach provides a good estimation of the distance between the robots, but obtaining the relative pose (including the displacement and orientation) remains challenging. We propose an approach to estimate the relative pose between a group of robots by equipping each robot with multiple UWB ranging nodes. We determine the pose between two robots by minimizing the residual error of the ranging measurements from all UWB nodes. To improve the localization accuracy, we propose to utilize the odometry constraints through a sliding window-based optimization. The optimized pose is then fused with the odometry in a particle filtering for pose tracking among a group of mobile robots. We have conducted extensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Localization based on received signal strength (RSS) has drawn great interest in the wireless sensor network (WSN). In this paper, we investigate the RSS-based multi-sources localization problem with unknown transmitted power under shadow fading. The log-normal shadowing effect is approximated through Fenton-Wilkinson (F-W) method and maximum likelihood estimation is adopted to optimize the RSS-based multiple sources localization problem. Moreover, we exploit a sparse recovery and weighted average of candidates (SR-WAC) based method to set up an initiation, which can efficiently approach a superior local optimal solution. It is shown from the simulation results that the proposed method has a much higher localization accuracy and outperforms the other

In this paper, we introduce an intelligent prediction system for mobile source localization in industrial Internet of things. The position and velocity of mobile source are jointly predicted by using Time Delay (TD) measurements in the intelligent system. To predict the position and velocity, the Relaxed Semi-Definite Programming (RSDP) algorithm is firstly designed by dropping the rank-one constraint. However, dropping the rank-one constraint leads to produce a suboptimal solution. To improve the performance, we further put forward a Penalty Function Semi-Definite Programming (PF-SDP) method to obtain the rank-one solution of the optimization problem by introducing the penalty terms. Then an Adaptive Penalty Function Semi-Definite Programming (APF-SDP) algorithm is also proposed to avoid the excessive penalty by adaptively choosing the penalty coefficient. We conduct experiments in both a simulation environment and a real system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results have demonstrated that the proposed intelligent APF-SDP algorithm outperforms the PF-SDP in terms of the position and velocity estimation whether the noise level is large or not.
We propose a time-multiplexed DS-DBR/SOA-gated system to deliver low-power fast tuning across S-/C-/L-bands. Sub-ns switching is demonstrated, supporting 122$times$50 GHz channels over 6.05 THz using AI techniques.
