We propose a cell planning scheme to maximize the resource efficiency of a wireless communication network while considering quality-of-service requirements imposed by different mobile services. In dense and heterogeneous cellular 5G networks, the available time-frequency resources are orthogonally partitioned among different slices, which are serviced by the cells. The proposed scheme achieves a joint optimization of the resource distribution between network slices, the allocation of cells to operate on different slices, and the allocation of users to cells. Since the original problem formulation is computationally intractable, we propose a convex inner approximation. Simulations show that the proposed approach optimizes the resource efficiency and enables a service-centric network design paradigm.

We consider unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless communication employing UAVs as relay nodes to increase the throughput between a pair of transmitter and receiver. We focus on developing effective methods to position the UAV(s) in the sky in the presence of a major source of interference, the existence of which makes the problem non-trivial. First, we consider utilizing a single UAV, for which we develop a theoretical framework to determine its optimal position aiming to maximize the SIR of the system. To this end, we investigate the problem for three practical scenarios, in which the position of the UAV is: (i) vertically fixed, horizontally adjustable; (ii) horizontally fixed, vertically adjustable; (iii) both horizontally and vertically adjustable. Afterward, we consider employing multiple UAVs, for which we propose a cost-effective method that simultaneously minimizes the number of required UAVs and determines their optimal positions so as to guarantee a certain SIR of the system. We further develop a distributed placement algorithm, which can increase the SIR of the system given an arbitrary number of UAVs. Numerical simulations are provided to evaluate the performance of our proposed methods.
In some Internet of Things (IoT) applications, multi-path propagation is a main constraint of communication channel. Recently, the chaotic baseband wireless communication system (CBWCS) is promising to eliminate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. However, the current technique is only capable of removing the partial effect of ISI, due to only past decoded bits are available for the suboptimal decoding threshold calculation. However, the future transmitting bits also contribute to the threshold. The unavailable future information bits needed by the optimal decoding threshold are an obstacle to further improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. Different from the previous method using echo state network (ESN) to predict one future information bit, the proposed method in this paper predicts the optimal threshold directly using ESN. The proposed ESN-based threshold prediction method simplifies the symbol decoding operation by removing the threshold calculation from the transmitting symbols and channel information, which achieves better BER performance as compared to the previous method. The reason for this superior result lies in two folds, first, the proposed ESN is capable of using more future symbols information conveyed by the ESN input to get more accurate threshold; second, the proposed method here does not need to estimate the channel information using Least Square method, which avoids the extra error caused by inaccurate channel information estimation. By this way, the calculation complexity is decreased as compared to the previous method. Simulation results and experiment based on a wireless open-access research platform under a practical wireless channel, show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.
Theoretically, full-duplex (FD) communications can double the spectral-efficiency (SE) of a wireless link if the problem of self-interference (SI) is completely eliminated. Recent developments towards SI cancellation techniques have allowed to realize the FD communications on low-power transceivers, such as small-cell (SC) base stations. Consequently, the FD technology is being considered as a key enabler of 5G and beyond networks. In the context of 5G, FD communications have been initially investigated in a single SC and then into multiple SC environments. Due to FD operations, a single SC faces residual SI and intra-cell co-channel interference (CCI), whereas multiple SCs face additional inter-cell CCI, which grows with the number of neighboring cells. The surge of interference in the multi-cell environment poses the question of the feasibility of FD communications. In this article, we first review the FD communications in single and multiple SC environments and then provide the state-of-the-art for the CCI mitigation techniques, as well as FD feasibility studies in a multi-cell environment. Further, through numerical simulations, the SE performance gain of the FD communications in ultra-dense massive multiple input multiple-output enabled millimeter wave SCs is presented. Finally, potential open research challenges of multi-cell FD communications are highlighted.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising and revolutionizing technology for future wireless communication systems owing to its capability to intelligently change the propagation environment and introduce a new dimension into wireless communication optimization. Most existing studies on IRS are based on an ideal reflection model. However, it is difficult to implement an IRS which can simultaneously realize any adjustable phase shift for the signals with different frequencies. Therefore, the practical phase shift model, which can describe the difference of IRS phase shift responses for the signals with different frequencies, should be utilized in the IRS optimization for wideband and multi-band systems. In this paper, we consider an IRS-assisted multi-cell multi-band system, in which different base stations (BSs) operate at different frequency bands. We aim to jointly design the transmit beamforming of BSs and the reflection beamforming of the IRS to minimize the total transmit power subject to signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints of individual user and the practical IRS reflection model. With the aid of the practical phase shift model, the influence between the signals with different frequencies is taken into account during the design of IRS. Simulation results illustrate the importance of considering the practical communication scenario on the IRS designs and validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.
In this paper, we consider a wireless uplink transmission scenario in which an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) serves as an aerial base station collecting data from ground users. To optimize the expected sum uplink transmit rate without any prior knowledge of ground users (e.g., locations, channel state information and transmit power), the trajectory planning problem is optimized via the quantum-inspired reinforcement learning (QiRL) approach. Specifically, the QiRL method adopts novel probabilistic action selection policy and new reinforcement strategy, which are inspired by the collapse phenomenon and amplitude amplification in quantum computation theory, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed QiRL solution can offer natural balancing between exploration and exploitation via ranking collapse probabilities of possible actions, compared to the traditional reinforcement learning approaches which are highly dependent on tuned exploration parameters.
