Secondary batteries are important energy storage devices for a mobile equipment, an electric car, and a large-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, variation of the local electronic state of the battery materials in the charge (or oxidization) process are still unclear. Here, we investigated the local electronic state of cobalt-hexacyanoferrate (Na$_x$Co[Fe(CN)$_6$]$_{0.9}$), by means of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) with high energy resolution (~100 meV). The L-edge RIXS is one of the most powerful spectroscopic technique with element- and valence-selectivity. We found that the local electronic state around Co$^{2+}$ in the partially-charged Na$_{1.1}$Co$^{2+}$$_{0.5}$Co$^{3+}$$_{0.5}$[Fe$^{2+}$(CN)$_6$]$_{0.9}$ film (x = 1.1) is the same as that of the discharged Na$_{1.6}$Co$^{2+}$[Fe$^{2+}$(CN)$_6$]$_{0.9}$ film (x = 1.6) within the energy resolution, indicating that the local electronic state around Co$^{2+}$ is invariant against the partial oxidization. In addition, the local electronic state around the oxidized Co$^{3+}$ is essentially the same as that of the fully-charged film Co$^{3+}$[Fe$^{2+}$(CN)$_6$]$_{0.3}$[Fe$^{3+}$(CN)$_6$]$_{0.6}$ (x = 0.0) film. Such a strong localization of the oxidized Co$^{3+}$ state is advantageous for the reversibility of the redox process, since the localization reduces extra reaction within the materials and resultant deterioration.

Nanoparticles of rubidium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (Rb$_j$Co$_k$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$_l cdot n$H$_2$O) were synthesized using different concentrations of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to produce four different batches of particles with characteristic diameters ranging from 3 to 13 nm. Upon illumination with white light at 5 K, the magnetization of these particles increases. The long-range ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures and the coercive fields evolve with nanoparticle size. At 2 K, particles with diameters less than approximately 10 nm provide a Curie-like magnetic signal.
The magnetic glassy state is a fascinating phenomenon, which results from the kinetic arrest of the first order magnetic phase transition. Interesting properties, such as metastable magnetization and nonequilibrium magnetic phases, are naturally developed in the magnetic glassy state. Here, we report magnetic glass property in the low spin state of Co3+ in EuBaCo2O5+{delta} ({delta} = 0.47) cobaltite at low temperature (T < 60 K). The measurements of magnetization under the cooling and heating in unequal fields, magnetization relaxation and thermal cycling of magnetization show the kinetic arrest of low magnetization state below 60 K. The kinetically arrested low temperature magnetic phase is further supported through the study of isothermal magnetic entropy, which shows the significant entropy change. The present results will open a new window to search the microscopic relation between the spin state transitions and the kinetic arrest induced magnetic glassy phenomena in complex materials.
The influence of local oxidation in silicon nanowires on hole transport, and hence the effect of varying the oxidation state of silicon atoms at the wire surface, is studied using density functional theory in conjunction with a Greens function scattering method. For silicon nanowires with growth direction along [110] and diameters of a few nanometers, it is found that the introduction of oxygen bridging and back bonds does not significantly degrade hole transport for voltages up to several hundred millivolts relative to the valence band edge. As a result, the mean free paths are comparable to or longer than the wire lengths envisioned for transistor and other nanoelectronics applications. Transport along [100]-oriented nanowires is less favorable, thus providing an advantage in terms of hole mobilities for [110] nanowire orientations, as preferentially produced in some growth methods.
Incommensurately modulated twin structure of nyerereite Na1.64K0.36Ca(CO3)2 has been first determined in the (3+1)D symmetry group Cmcm({alpha}00)00s with modulation vector q = 0.383a*. Unit-cell values are a = 5.062(1), b = 8.790(1), c = 12.744(1) {AA}. Three orthorhombic components are related by threefold rotation about [001]. Discontinuous crenel functions are used to describe occupation modulation of Ca and some CO3 groups. Strong displacive modulation of the oxygen atoms in vertexes of such CO3 groups is described using x-harmonics in crenel intervals. The Na, K atoms occupy mixed sites whose occupation modulation is described by two ways using either complementary harmonic functions or crenels. The nyerereite structure has been compared both with commensurately modulated structure of K-free Na2Ca(CO3)2 and with widely known incommensurately modulated structure of {gamma}-Na2CO3.
Au/Co/Au nanopillars fabricated by colloidal lithography of continuous trilayers exhibit and enhanced coercive field and the appearance of an exchange bias field with respect to the continuous layers. This is attributed to the lateral oxidation of the Co interlayer that appears upon disc fabrication. The dependence of the exchange bias field on the Co nanodots size and on the oxidation degree is analyzed and its microscopic origin clarified by means of Monte Carlo simulations based on a model of a cylindrical dot with lateral core/shell structure.
